Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 GMC Terrain - Curt

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 GMC Terrain, we're gonna taking a look at and showing you how to install the Kirk 00:00:04 Class Three Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number 13591. Speaker 2: This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. As you can see, this is the only part of the cross tube you can see. Has a rounded design, fits with the contour of the vehicle. What's good about this hitch is it's flush with the bumper fascia 00:00:23, so you're not gonna have to worry about hitting your legs or your shins on it when you're loading or unloading the back of the vehicle. It's gonna be a class three, it's gonna be two inch by two inch.

You're gonna have a five eighths inch hitch pin hole, it also has a reinforced collar around the receiver tube to give you a little extra stability. Plate style safety chain rings. You can see it has plenty of room for different size safety chain hooks. You're gonna have a max towing weight of 350 pounds, which is a downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube. You're gonna have a max trailer weight of 3,500 pounds, which is the trailer plus the load included. Now, you can use weight distribution with this.

Tongue weight is gonna go up to 400 pounds, and the trailer weight is gonna go up to 4,000 pounds. I do recommend checking your owners manual to make sure your vehicle can withstand that amount of weight. And you're gonna wanna pick the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch. This hitch is fairly easy to install. Comes with all the necessary hardware. There's gonna be no drilling required.

It's gonna use existing weld nuts in the frame, and existing holes in the bumper. Now we will give you a few measurements to help you in deciding on any hitch mount accessories you may need. Such as a bike rack, ball mount, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper, is gonna be about two and a half inches. From the ground to the top innermost part of the receiver tube, will be about 15 inches. Now let's show you how to get this installed.

First thing we're gonna do to start our installation is this panel right here in the bottom of the bumper, we need to remove it. Up inside, there's a little tab, and you just push in. There can be four of them. Push in on the one side, and it'll start to pop out.You just reach up, push in on that tab, go across and push in each one, it'll come off. Next, you're gonna take one of your hex bolts, and up on the side of the frame rail you're gonna have two holes. They're gonna have weld nuts inside of them. Even though this is a new model vehicle, you wanna make sure that you take your hex bolt and thread it in, so that it goes in clean. If you have any holdup at all, you need to clean them out, spray some lubrication in there, and take a hose brush or something and clean them out.Next thing we're gonna do is we're gonna take our square spacer block, our carriage bolt, and our pole wire. And what we need to do . If you look right up here, you're gonna have a hole here, and you're gonna have a hole here. You wanna take this push wire or feed wire, string in. We're gonna put it through that hole and we're gonna go down the end, right past the exhaust pipe, to the end of the frame rail. Now, what I suggest doing is if you bend the end of it, it'll help keep your wire from pulling up into the hole. Now, what we're gonna do . So we're gonna take your spacer block and your carriage bolt, and we're gonna thread it on to the end of our pole wire. We're gonna push it into the end of the bumper beam, we're gonna pull it through, 'til we come out this hole. Now, your kit only comes with one wire, so we're just gonna unthread it.And we're gonna do the same thing on this side. You go ahead and remove the pole wire. Next, with an extra set of hands we'll raise our hitch into position. You wanna make sure that you don't push your two bolts that you have in the center back up into the frame. On the outside of our frame, we're gonna use a hex bolt, kind of called inaudible 00:04:22. You wanna make sure that the teeth are facing toward the hitch. Now, a little trick I wanna show you. Because this moves and it's such a tight spot, you take a flat head screw driver, or you can even use a socket if you wanted. Usually, a flat head screw driver gives you a little bit more room. And, put a little pressure on that bolt. When you put your flange nut on, it'll be a little easier to thread onto it, because the bolt's not gonna move and you don't have to worry about pushing it back up in there. And we'll do the same thing for this one over here. Next thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna tighten down my bolts. We use a three quarter inch socket for these two here, with a swivel head. Next, we're gonna use a short three quarter inch socket for our bolts here on the side. Now we're gonna repeat that same thing for the other side. Next, we'll torque 00:05:31 all our hardware down, there's specifications in the instructions. Speaker 1: And that'll do it for look at and installation on the Kirk 00:05:47 Class Three Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number 13591. On our 2017 GMC Terrain.

WE RECEIVED THE TRAILER HITCH VERY QUICKLY, BUT WE RECEIVED THE WRONG BOLTS AND I HAD TWO PEOPLE WORK ON INSTALLING IT; IT TOOK OVER 3 HOURS TO FINALLY GET IT ON BEFORE THEY DECIDED THE BOLTS WERE THE WRONG SIZE. VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT I HAD TO PAY A GARAGE $100 TO INSTALL IT. YOU SHOULD MAKE SURE YOUR PACKAGING DEPT CHECKS THESE THINGS BEFORE SENDING THEM. THE HITCH ITSELF WORKS OK FOR ME. 508470

Comments

Having a hitch shipped out with the incorrect hardware is an extremely rare occurrence. What you experienced is most frequently caused by dirt and corrosion built up into the nuts welded into your vehicles frame. On vehicles that are more than 2 or 3 years old, driven in an area that uses ice melting compounds on the roads in the winter, its not uncommon at all for the weld nuts in the vehicle frame to become clogged up with road debris or corrosion. Using a battery terminal cleaner like # DW00254
Battery Post and Terminal Cleaner - Wire Brush
$2.94
usually does the trick, but in extreme cases, a thread tap might need to be used.

The hardest thing was getting it out of the box. Not really. Actually, my wife (she had just put some color in her hair) helped me lift it into place. Once the 1st bolt was started, the rest went smooth. It took about 30 minutes from begining to end. Thanks, guys, for making it easy. 391709

Product fitment and ease of installation was perfect. The reciever hitch showed up in excellent condition and took me about 20 minutes to install. The instructions and videos on etrailer.com provided all the info I needed to install this product. Definitely heed thier advice about cleaning out the factory weld nuts. That was the only issue I had but it was quickly resolved with a nylon 3/4 inch bottle brush. 674240

This trailer hitch was exactly what I needed. Installation was going well until I ran into a problem with the bolts not threading correctly (likely due to the threads on my car being rusted). Fortunately I live close to etrailer and they offer free installation of their products. Customer service was excellent. The product is excellent. I use it to pull a couple of waverunners and it works perfectly for that purpose. 652953

The product was super simple to install with the video they have helped so much with the hitch and the wiring harness. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is bc they sent me the wrong product the first time. They did send out the my correct order the same day, they did not wait to get the product they sent my the first time back before sending the correct one. Super satisfied with everything and how easy it was to install. 614042

Item was received as originally promised. Carton was ripped open on one corner due to improper packaging. Trailer hitch was loose in carton, and 70 lbs of iron freely bouncing around during shipping tore through one corner. No serious damage to hitch however. George; installed the hitch on the 2013 chevy Equinox today with my 12 yr. old twin grandchildren (M&F). Corbin manned the jack to hoist the hitch into position while Emma fixed the sockets and ratchet and rendered assit. It went together perfectly. Please note the age of my helpers. Yes it was heavy (good quality) perfect balance or we could not have completed this task. Their father was really impressed. I will try to send some photos of project so far. Now lets get on the wire harness. Thanks again George for all help on this esp. shipping and hdl. 571104

Curt Hitch for the 2014 Chevy Equinox was pretty straight forward and simple, only Six Bolts needed to use. It took me about an hour only because I had to get tools, raise the Car rear wheels on ramps as I don't have a lift. The Hitch is heavy, so I first thought about using a car Jack to lift it, but I have a Lawn Tractor portable lift which was perfect for raising the Hitch to the mounting holes on the car, single handed. The rest was as per the Installations and Video by Etrailer on youtube. The hardware package also came with instructions and complete including the wire fish to get the bolts in the frame to the holes. My next step is wiring using the Etrailer Wiring kit made for the car. Looks to be a simple job per their Video. 530164

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Draw-Tite vs. Curt Hitch on a 2013 GMC Terrain
  • In terms of quality both Draw-Tite and Curt make very reliable trailer hitches and honestly neither is going to wilt under the elements in the northeast U.S. When choosing a hitch what people generally look at is capacity and, like you asked, if modifications are going to be made to their vehicle. If I had a 2013 GMC Terrain, I would go with the Draw-Tite # 76028 over the Curt # 13591. The Draw-Tite has a higher tongue weight capacity and overall towing capacity than the Curt, If...

  • Replacement Hardware for Trailer Hitch on 2013 Chevy Eqinox
  • The correct hardware will depend specifically on the hitch you have for your 2013 Chevy Equinox. For example, the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76028 uses M12 x 1.75 x 45 bolts. For any hitch we do have replacement hardware, the Replacement Hardware Kit for Trailer Hitches # RHK. All you need to do is go to this product page, enter the model number of your hitch in the box that says "Hitch Item Number" and then select the correct manufacturer from the drop-down box. Simply...

  • The weld nuts on your 2013 Chevy Equinox use M12x1.75x45 size bolts like what your Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76028 came with. I checked and the similar Curt # 13591 and etrailer.com # E98865 trailer hitches use M12x1.75x40 size bolts which means they are slightly shorter but not so much that it would affect anything. If you didn't already use some lubricant when you cleaned the weld nuts try spraying some WD40 in there and then letting it soak for a bit before cleaning...

I have included the link to all the fish wire applications for your convenience.

  • Can Trailer Hitch Be Installed on Vehicle with Rust on Frame
  • If the vehicle frame has surface rust where the hitch would mount that's pretty normal and would be fine. If the frame has enough rust that the frame is basically starting to deteriorate then I can't recommend you install a hitch. The Curt hitch part # 13591 would be the most popular and best option we have. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. If at all possible I would remove surface rust with sand paper and spray paint over to keep it from spreading.

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2007 Saturn Vue
  • Actually, if you were to try to install Curt hitch # C19101 it would require a lot more work than the custom fit hitches for your 2007 Saturn Vue. You would have to access the metal bumper beam which would require removal of the rear fascia. Then once you get that removed it is possible, even likely, that the hitch will not fit. Installation of a custom hitch such as # 13591 is much easier as you can see in the video I have linked showing an example installation. I have also included...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2016 Chevy Equinox without Factory Tow Package
  • For your 2016 Chevy Equinox you can use Curt Class III trailer hitch # 13591. This is a 2 inch hitch rated for 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. be sure to consult the vehicle owner's manual for the vehicle towing capacity and go by the lower of the 2 ratings. I have linked a video showing an example installation of this hitch for you. For trailer wiring, since your Equinox does not have a factory tow package you can use # 118494 to provide a 4-Way flat...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2010 GMC Terrain Towing Kayak Trailer
  • For your 2010 GMC Terrain I would still recommend going with a 2 inch hitch like the Curt part # 13591 as it will have more capacity (even though you don't really need it), but 2 inch hitches have more accessories made for them so it would give you greater future hitch accessory flexibility. For trailer wiring you would then want the part # 56094. Install video for both attached. Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes...

  • Installation Requirements for 2011 Chevrolet Equinox Trailer Hitch and Wiring
  • The wiring for the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, part # 118494, is a custom fit and there should be no need to reprogram the vehicle computer. Reprogramming would also not be necessary after the trailer hitch installation. The wiring harness simply plugs in behind both tail lights, and because the wiring draws its power from the vehicle battery, the vehicle circuits are protected from back feed or overload. In the event of an overload, the black converter box actually turns itself off to...

  • Installing Trailer Hitch on 2012 GMC Terrain with Hex Bolts Not Fitting
  • For your 2012 GMC Terrain, The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 13591 the M12-1.75 x 40mm hex bolts are confirmed to fit the weld nuts of your vehicle frame. If you are having a difficult time getting the bolts to thread, then I recommend gently using a wire brush to clean the threads of the weld nuts. Be careful not to use too much force as you could damage the threads, but a wire brush will remove any dirt or debris that is keeping the bolts from properly...

  • Do Torque Specs for Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2003 Saturn Vue have to be Followed
  • On a 2993 Saturn Vue you should be fishwiring in 1/2 inch bolts and blocks through the frame and to the bolt holes on top of the hitch as indicate in step 5. The bolts that get fishwired in are 1/2 inch carriage bolts. It is important to get the bolts to the proper torque spec. If they are too tight you can damage the hitch and vehicle. If they are not tight enough you could loose the hitch. Most auto parts stores will loan out tools. You will need a torque wrench that goes up to at...

  • Swagman 2+2 2-Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2012 GMC Terrain and 2004 Chevy Avalanche
  • The Swagman 2+2 2-Bike and 4-Bike Carrier # S64692 would be an excellent choice for a bike rack for your 2004 Chevy Avalanche, but theres not an ideal way I could recommend using this rack on a vehicle with a 1-1/4 inch hitch. When you use a hitch adapter like you referenced you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch in half and end up with a lot of excess play and movement of the rack in the hitch. I think your best option would be to get the # S64692 but then to also upgrade the...

  • Wiring Harness Recommendation for a 2014 Chevy Equinox
  • The Curt Wiring Harness part # 56094 that you referenced would work well on your 2014 Chevy Equinox. Like you noticed, it does not have a converter box or require a power wire run to the vehicle battery. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. For a hitch you also might be interested in the Curt Hitch part # 13591. For ball mounts I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a carrying bag.

  • Trailer Wiring and Hitch Recommendation for a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox LT
  • The best way to install and use the Curt Wiring Harness part # C56012 would be to keep it stored in the jack compartment when not in use and then when needed open the jack compartment and run the 4-way out through the rear door. Running it through the floor might be possible, but it's not the recommended way for installing the harness so I cannot recommend a way for you to do that. For a hitch the Curt Class III Hitch # 13591 would be an excellent choice. It's a Class III hitch with...

Take a look at the recreational towing section (10-78) in the owner's manual to confirm. As far as a rear towing package I assume that you mean a trailer hitch. The trailer hitches that fit a 2012 Equinox will actually fit 2005 to 2016 Equinox models; such as Curt Class III hitch # 13591. But the hardware will have to be replaced since it is designed to be torqued...
