Question:
I need a class III hitch to attach a mobility scooter platform carrier/ramp to a 2012 Chevy Equinox. What would be the best kind to get? I have no idea where to even start looking. Thank you for your help!

The highest-rated hitch for your 2012 Chevrolet Equinox is a 2-inch Class III hitch such as Curt # 13591 rated for 350-lbs tongue weight. Tongue weight is the downward force on a hitch. In the case of a mobility scooter and its ramped carrier, the combined total weight of these two items must remain within this 350-lb hitch capacity.
You will first want to confirm the actual weight of your particular scooter. Then you can subtract this weight from the 350-lb hitch capacity to determine how heavy a ramped carrier you can use. For example, if your scooter weighs 250-lbs then the most your ramped carrier can weigh is 100-lbs. It is also a good idea to check your Equinox owner's manual for any guidance related to acceptable weights for hitch-mounted accessories.
The link provided will take you to our main page for Class III-compatible 2-inch ramped carriers. These come in several types: fixed, folding, lowering and swinging varieties.
For example, Flint Hill Goods offers their 29x49 Wheelchair Carrier # FHG69ZR that has a 60-inch ramp; this carrier weighs in at 77-lbs.
The two linked articles on hitch carriers will help you consider your options and decide what will work best for you.
