Tips for Replacing and Installing Trailer Fenders

  • Do your best to match the dimensions of the new fender to your old one.
    • If a fender was damaged during a blowout, use the opposite fender to get the dimensions.
  • As with all trailer maintenance, don't forget to chock your wheels before getting started.
  • For a bolt-on fender, use your existing mounting hardware, if possible.
    • The old mounting bolts or screws might be stripped or rusted, in which case you'll need to tap them out and buy new hardware.
  • If removing an old, welded-on fender, either carefully chisel it off yourself or take your trailer to a weld shop to have the fender professionally removed.
  • Don't forget to prime and paint the new fender to keep it from rusting (and to match your trailer's finish).
  • Before you start drilling, position the fender where you need it and center it over your wheel well.
    • Mark where you need to drill (measure twice, drill once).
  • Don't tighten down the mounting hardware completely until you're sure the fender is mounted correctly.

Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this etrailer Single Axle Steel Trailer Fender for eight inch wheels, for a quantity of one fender. Now, this rounded fender will cover one tire on your single axle trailer. This does act as a splash guard, keeps any road debris from hitting other vehicles and it'll help protect your trailer's cargo. Now, I wanted to zoom in and just show you the outer edge on this. Right here, you can see has a nice one-inch curve radius to it.

Gives a clean finished look and, on the inner edge, if you notice, it does have a 90 degree lip on it. And the reason they do that is it allows it to mount flush with your enclosed trailer. Now, this is a nice sturdy 16 gauge cold rolled steel construction. Nice raw finish. Now, this can be primed and then painted to provide even more resistance to corrosion and to match your trailer's paint finish. Now, this is a weld on or bolt on installation. It's not pre drilled.

The mounting brackets for a bolt on installation are sold separately. This part is made in the USA. A few specs on this. It is for one fender and the application is for single axle trailers with eight inch diameter wheels. The weight on this is only about three pounds. And the last thing we'll do is just zoom in and give you some measurements.

So, we're going to do the length from here to here. If we take our tape measure, it's going to be right at 19 and a half inches long. Overall height on this, it's going to be right at five and a quarter inches tall. And the overall width on it, is right at five and a half inches wide. But that should do it for the review on this etrailer Single Axle Steel Trailer Fender for eight inch wheels, for a quantity of one.

Very happy with the fit & easy to drill a few holes. GREAT price! Checked @ a local store & they wanted the same price for 1 fender & it had rust on surface new! Got mirror extenders off this company before & every thing has been good.

Very well made. I added some more bar tacks to bond the backing plate to the fender. It probably would have been fine as is, but for three minutes of effort I know that the two won't separate. I built a T out of 1" tubular steel to mount it to the trailer and there is no flex, once I welded it all together. Arrived clean enough to paint (but I still wiped it down with isopropyl alchohol before painting).Nice heavy gauge fender.

I used these steel fenders to replace aluminum fenders on my utility trailer after one had fallen off along the road somewhere. Prior to installing these I painted them with Krylon Fusion gloss hammered metal spray paint, which has held up well.

by:

Two new fenders worked out fine. I had replaced the original new fenders on my trailer that I didn't like. I made and welded on my own inner fender out of 16ga material and 11ga floor plate for steps/gussets.

by:

I put two of these fenders on my canoe trailer. Both broke before I'd gone 1,000 miles.

by:

This is an exact replacement for another product that I previously purchased with a back plate for my father's homemade boat trailer. I lost the fender on a long haul of his boat, but not the back plate. I was able to bolt on the original back plate. I am completely satisfied with this product.

Worked great. snug but fits 275/75/r18 (~33in) tires so I can match my tow vehicle. overlanding trailer build. Originally done in exterior black semi gloss. After chipping following 3k mi swapped coating to primer + two coats of truck bed liner which has adhered really well. Durable. When well supported they can work as a step for me. I did mod them to bring them down in width to form better for my application (would have been too wide, extending 3in past the tire). Responded well to being trimmed. Applied typical rubber-coated 1/8in edge trim to cut side where that met the trailer wall. While not precisely the right item for my unique/custom application, its durability and workability to fit my project was great.

Was told order would arrive last Friday. It partially did. Called and was told other fender would be shipped out of another location and would arrive by Tuesday. The first one came smooth, the second ribbed. Need this resolved so I have a match.

by:

Nice fender, unfortunately it does not fit. The fender height is not adequate. The fender isn’t long enough and its height doesn’t reach the mounting brackets. I would like to return it can I have a return authorization number?

by:

Here’s what we did with the trailer fender. It made a nice addition to the custom spare tire mount I made for our son’s ‘72 GMC 3500.
Thanks,

DON'T DO IT! Spend a little more on the galvanized version! I had mine stored outside (under roof), but the humidity still got to them and they have tons of surface rust.

  • Replacement Fender Options for Choi Lee Trailer
The closest thing we have to an 18" long fender is the Single Axle Trailer Fender # HP39VR which is 19-1/2" long. The full dimensions are 19-1/2" long x 5-1/2" wide x 5-1/4" tall so it falls a little short on the width. If you're ok with a plastic fender you could also use the Fulton Single Axle Trailer Fender # F008550. This is 7" wide x 20-1/4" long x 6-1/4" tall. Without an exact match all you can do is try to get the dimensions as close as possible on new fenders.
