Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These chains are great for giving you a little extra traction in the snow. But if you live somewhere where you experience heavy snow often, you'll definitely want something more heavy duty than cables. Because these cable chains are lightweight and don't take up a lot of storage space, they are also perfect for keeping in your truck if you occasionally travel through areas that require you to have chains on hand.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Cable Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground.

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Drape chain over tire.

2. Drape the chain over the tire or lay the chain out and drive onto it.

Connect cable behind tire.

3. Reach around to the back of the tire and fasten the rear side cable by running the end with the metal stops through the eye of the hook on the opposite end.

Secure excess cable.

4. Run any excess side cable through the metal clip.

Repeat around front.

5. Repeat this process on the front side of the tire.

Install rubber adjusters

6. Drive forward 1 car length, then check the chain and hand tighten it again if needed.

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) are recommended to help ensure a tight fit. Connect these to the front side of the cable in a star pattern. Make sure the hooks face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2021 Ford Ranger

These Cable Chains were the easiest to install of any others I've had. The instructions that came with the chains weren't great, but I watched the video on etrailer which was very straight forward. I watched the video 2 times then took the chains out of the bag and had both on in less than 5 minutes.

by:

Service was great! etrailer reached out when they realized what I ordered was out of stock and would take some time to come in. I ended up changing to a different product to get it much faster, one they suggested. They kept me updated with delivery information. I highly recommend this company!

by:

Item looks to be well
Made and it is
well packed! Tensioners do not come with the chains otherwise they are a good value for the money.

by:
2016 Lincoln MKX

These cable chains will be perfect "just in case" items for our cross state trips.
Hope we'll never need them but great peace of mind!

by:
2011 Kia Sorento

Purchased these chains "just in case" and of course, I had to put them into use in the first few weeks. The installation video was very informative and made putting the chains on easier. After a little bit of driving on packed snow, I got out and checked them for adjustments any needed, but the chains were still secure.
Taking the chains off is a little difficult, due to their being frozen and wet, but the design is not an issue.
Finally, I recommend you travel with an emergency kit with any tools needed, a headlamp for nighttime installs/removals, and a waterproof mat (rolled yoga mat?) so you don't get soaked. Good product for occasional use.

by:

Needed lightweight cable chains for wife's Q5. Since I knew the chains were essentially only for looks (AWD with M/S tires, Audi doesn't recommend chain use and would likely never be used (but CHP and NHP require you carry when chain control), I aslo didn't want to spend $ 250+. Q5 has 20' rims so selection at usual inexpensive places scarce to say least.

etrailer had right size, right style, right price and delivered with low cost shipping within 3 business days to my door. What is not to like. Second time buying chains from etrailer (2018 F150 4X) and they make the process a breeze. Highly recommended.

by:
2014 Ford Edge

great tire cable and very easy to install. Used them once last year but with the tremendous snow fall we've been having in the Sierras, I surely will be using the chains quite a bit more this season.

by:

These tire chains work well for traction in emergency situations however the metal had some really sharp edges from the manufacturing process and even touching the chains cut up my hands like broken glass. I used gloves the second time and they shredded the gloves installing the chains. Won't be using them again unless as a last resort. Running a file over the metal is needed.

by:

Apparently, I have an unusual tire size and I could not find tire cables that would fit my car in my Southern California location. I guess it didn't help that the use of tire cables around here is a rarity in the land of sunshine. After exhausting all local options, I found etrailer.com online. I was quickly helped and for a very affordable price I placed my order. The package arrived promptly and I'm now ready for my first 2017 trip to Mammoth. Thanks etrailer.com!

by:
2013 Ford Taurus

Used these on my all-wheel Taurus SHO to the wilds of Montana last Christmas. Got stranded on a steep driveway that was one solid piece of ice that I had not chance of moving up what so ever. Put the cables on and literally drove up the sheet of ice as if it were gravel. Easy on, easy off and extremely effective. Highly rated especially considering the price.

by:

prompt shipping and Great quality but we haven’t used the snow cables yet.

by:

Had trouble identifying which type of chains I needed for my new vehicle. Trailer was called and they handed my request in a fast and professional manner. The chains arrived as promised and are a relief to have in my new car.

by:

It was exactly what I wanted and the installation instructions were very helpful.

by:

Received the product today. I want to thank George J for upgrading the delivery date. Thank you so much George J. The ordering process was easy.

Have used these chains on another vehicle and purchased these for my wife’s suv. Easy to install and do what they are intended to do, keep u rolling down the road in snowy conditions. In addition, Can’t say enough about etrailer’s customer service. They are very responsive and will take care of their customers.

by:

Great service; hoping to never have to use them though they are required at times to at least be in the vehicle here.

by:

As always perfect item with zero worry about compatibility. Great company, great products, excellent customer service and video help. Its the first and only place i look. Havent used these chains yet but they fit. They will be there if needed.

  • Snow Tire Chain Recommendation for 2019 Audi Q5
Yes, if you are going to be in an area where there is going to be snow, like in Colorado for skiing, you are going to need snow chains for safety. In fact, you may encounter signs that say traction devices are required, so it is a very good idea to have them. I looked up the owner's manual of your 2019 Audi Q5, and it states that you can use tire chains, but they need to be on the rear wheels only. The best option for snow tire chains for your Audi are the Konig Self-Tensioning Snow Tire...

These chains install in a matter of seconds without requiring you to get under the vehicle in the snow, provide excellent traction, and will last a long time. These are a cost-effective way to stay legal in areas that require you to have traction devices but if you're looking for something to help you get through snow then we need to look at actual chains because cables won't help at all - the light snow rating basically just means snow that you can get through without chains. First, the two sets of Titan Tire Chains that you referenced, Chain Cable type # TC2029 and Twist Link type # TC2229, are both fits for your 2011 Ford Escape with 235/70-16 tires. Tire chains vary considerably in their design, cost, ease of installation and effectiveness. Also, certain passenger vehicles are limited to a specific low-clearance type of chain, termed S-Class chains, such as the # TC2029. These cables are meant to fit vehicles with minimal clearance at the wheel wells. A set of real would work even better and not break the bank.
