Question:

I drive a 2013 Nissan Rogue. Tire size is 225/55-18. I drive to our cabin in the mountains occasionally and need to purchase chains or cables for my new car. I do not know which brand of chains or cables would be best suited for my vehicle. Obviously, I do not want to spend an arm and a leg, either! The chains would be for emergency use only. Is there an advantage to chains over cables, or vice versa?

To start, chains are going to offer more traction and durability than cables. They are definitely the way to go if you use chains frequently or if you live or travel in areas where chains are required by law. In order to determine if there are any special requirements or restrictions for your vehicle you will want to consult the owners manual on the use of chains.

If you just need to have something for infrequent use then cables would be the way to go, # TC2029, with rubber adjusters # TCOA2 to help maintain the proper tension.

If you want to go with chains and do not need to have Class S chains then you can use square link chains with cam tighteners # TC2229SCAM. Since they are not Class S compatible they cannot be used if the owners manual states there is limited clearance. If you can use them then the square links are going to offer the best traction. Class S chains require the least amount of clearance around the tire.
