Tips for Replacing and Installing Trailer Fenders

  • Do your best to match the dimensions of the new fender to your old one.
    • If a fender was damaged during a blowout, use the opposite fender to get the dimensions.
  • As with all trailer maintenance, don't forget to chock your wheels before getting started.
  • For a bolt-on fender, use your existing mounting hardware, if possible.
    • The old mounting bolts or screws might be stripped or rusted, in which case you'll need to tap them out and buy new hardware.
  • If removing an old, welded-on fender, either carefully chisel it off yourself or take your trailer to a weld shop to have the fender professionally removed.
  • Don't forget to prime and paint the new fender to keep it from rusting (and to match your trailer's finish).
  • Before you start drilling, position the fender where you need it and center it over your wheel well.
    • Mark where you need to drill (measure twice, drill once).
  • Don't tighten down the mounting hardware completely until you're sure the fender is mounted correctly.

You can weld or bolt on these fenders. I’ve opted to have them weld by my local muffler shop, I used two jack stands on each end to place and level. I like them and I would recommend to others.

by:

I used these to "mini-tub" my pro-touring project car. They worked perfectly for my needs. Well constructed and both were perfectly symmetrical.

by:

The product was as I wanted it to be very good quality they were painted blue prewired with tail lights and marker lights installed plastic conduit inside fenders for wiring and we are using them on a car dolly they are just alittle larger than orignal but will wok fine

As well as when I purchased the fenders and installed them. Ive towed this trailer 6,000 miles since install. Working quite well.

by:

Products are very good quality, especially the aluminum trailer ramps. I ordered the fenders light ramps and deck screws and I am very satisfied with the quality. I ordered the fenders, lights, ramps and deck screws and I am very satisfied with the quality. Ordering with simple and shipping was fast. I will be ordering all of my trailer supplies from etrailer.

by:

I think the fenders are fine . Seem to be well made and like how they look, unfortunately, I had to buy a third fender after I had a blow out on my trailer. Didn't fare to well when that happened at 60 mph. First picture is a before shot and the second is an after shot if you couldn't tell.

by:

Package arrived promptly and without damage. Ordered the fenders with the backing already on.
Attachment was simple and easy with the MIG. Note that the backing that is on the fender is spot welded. It required further tack welds between each spot weld to keep it from vibrating. Overall, a good sturdy fender that should last.

by:

The fender was good quality & it seemed priced right.
The standard shipping was pretty quick. Only 3 days from ordering. And pretty much across the nation.
The packaging was a little lacking. Put in a box with no packing. Slight dented. But not enough to call them. Although one of the fenders I ordered a few years ago had to be sent back.
All in all … a great company to deal with!
Customer support is wonderful!

by:

The vertical panel alignment to the fender between the two I purchased was very different and possibly not controlled prior to welding. Do not rely on the panel edge as a reference for mounting.

This is an unfinished steel part and will readily rust if not painted.

Much more rigid than similar sized aluminum fenders.

by:

They are what we expected to receive. The value was excellent, Very good communication through the whole process.

by:

I purchased a boat trailer with no fenders (the originals rusted out and were removed) and these turned out to be perfect. Very sturdy and well built.

by:

I’m so proud of my self on making the right choice and purchase from ETRAILER, large inventory, fast delivery, quality products and best of all competitive affordable prices
I ordered wheel fenders and they fit perfectly just a couple of coats of paint and done.
Most recommend for all your hauling needs

Still going strong!!! I dont really beat on my stuff. I was given a trailer that had seen better days, I rebuilt most of the mechanicals on it & its still serving me well…Thanks for the follow up though…

by:

I don't usually write reviews, but my experience working with etrailer.com has been exceptional! I like dealing with a company that has a real human being answer their phone and etrailer does that. I had ordered the wrong parts for a trailer and dreaded the return activities. Sharon O was very helpful and got the replacement parts sent out the same day we talked. She also sent me a pdf that I was able to print and use as a UPS label to return the wrong parts I had ordered. All I had to do was take the package to a UPS office. (etrailer.com even paid for the shipping charge and deducted the amount from the refund for the parts I returned.)

by:

Very well made. I added some more bar tacks to bond the backing plate to the fender. It probably would have been fine as is, but for three minutes of effort I know that the two won't separate. I built a T out of 1" tubular steel to mount it to the trailer and there is no flex, once I welded it all together. Arrived clean enough to paint (but I still wiped it down with isopropyl alchohol before painting).Nice heavy gauge fender.

by:

These fenders are solid and well built.
4 stars instead of five because I ordered a receiver hitch and it was packaged with the fenders and caused some minor cosmetic damage.
I also added some welds to the back plate as it was minimally spot welded in only a couple spots.

by:

The product was exactly what I ordered, and it was in perfect condition See

by:

Excellent experience, super-fast shipping who could ask for more.

by:

Fenders are excellent quality, couldn’t be more satisfied. The people I dealt with when ordering were very helpful, prompt efficient service….

Very high quality. Rebuilt a trailer that had been sitting on the ranch full of junk for 15 years. Had a mobile home axle and wheels on it. eTrailer had the perfect size fender. ready to paint...no prep needed.

Great! No Complaints after a year on the ranch.

by:

The fender is nice. I did have to weld the fender to the backing plate as most of the spot welds broke after about 6 months of use.

by:

It’s been a year since I painted and installed the fenders and the fact that I have not to think about them since once is a testament to how well built they are

  • Looking For Replacement Left Fender For U-Haul Tow Dolly
Hello Larry, thanks for reaching out. We offer quite a few different single axle fenders, so we may have one that will work for you, but we do not offer anything made specifically for the U-haul tow dollies. We may have a generic/ universal fender that will work for you. The best way to track down potential replacements will be to measure the current fender and try to find a match. For example, the Single Axle Fender # HP36VR is 9" wide, 32" long and 15" tall. It will work with most 14"...

  • How to Determine Proper Spacing Between Tire and Fender for Clearance on 3000 LB Trailer
Great question. As a general rule, when your trailer is loaded to it's full capacity, there should be a minimum clearance of 3 inches between the top of your tire and the underside of your fender. This should give you adequate clearance for potholes and bumps. If you want to get precise, on an underslung trailer (the springs are mounted under the axle), you should measure the distance between the bottom of your frame and the top of your axle. I can understand that if your boat is loaded on the trailer, you don't want to remove one of the wheels to measure the fenders. Measuring a fender with the tire still mounted can be tricky, but it's not impossible. I've provided a diagram that should be helpful. You already know how to measure the width. To get the length it is easiest to tape a piece of stiff paper to the end of each fender edge that will protrude past the wheel. Then measure between the papers. For the height, you can...

  • How are the Steel and Diamond Plate Trailer Fenders Measured
When measuring our Steel and Diamond Plate trailer fenders we measure overall width, overall length across the diameter of the fender (across the bottom where it would set on the floor) and overall height. So the 16-Gauge Steel, Single-Axle Trailer Fender, item # HP36VR, is 9 inches overall width, 32 inches overall width across the bottom and 15 inches overall height. All of our fenders are measured in the same way. The video shows how this is measured at the very end.

  • Removing Rust from Metal Trailer Fenders For Paint Prep
The trailer fender part # HP36VR that you referenced is raw steel so it's going to rust if it's exposed to moisture. When you go to paint yours I would take some steel wool to the rusty areas to get it all off and then prime and paint it whatever color you like and you'll be good! You might even see if you can find a spray paint that has a primer in it already to eliminate that step. Most paints are good to use on metal surfaces too so it shouldn't be super hard to find what you would need.

Since the Single Axle Trailer Fender w/ Backing # HP36VR you referenced is raw steel priming and painting it is recommended otherwise it will corrode fairly quickly. Untreated metal requires primer to seal from exposure before paint as well. Best option will be to go with an oil based, rust inhibitive primer.
