Video Transcript for Yakima FatCat EVO Ski and Snowboard Carrier Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima FatCat EVO line of locking rooftop ski and snowboard carriers. It's available to hold six skis or four boards, in silver, with part number Y03097. It's also available in black, to hold six skis or four boards with part number Y03096. Or, if you'd like the smaller version that holds four skis or two boards, you can pick it up in black with part number Y030953. So. here's what our FatCat EVO looks like when it's installed.

It's going to allow us to carry up to six skis, or four snowboards, or up to four skis, or two snowboards, depending on which FatCat EVO you buy. A few things that set this carrier apart from the rest is one, the double joint hinge here on this one side. When it's closed over your gear, it actually raises up, making it have an even fit all the way across the carrier. This is going to keep your gear a lot more in place. Another great thing is, you have the option to raise it up about 2 1/2" on one side to accommodate for skis with tall bindings. This is also beneficial for if you have a lower profile roof rack setup.

It can prevent your bindings from coming in contact with the roof of your vehicle causing harm. Here you can see the black EVO 4 in place. As you can see, we're not able to carry as many skis along with our boards, but with it being smaller, it frees up more room on our crossbars for other accessories. The EVO 4 has all the same features as the EVO 6, it's just smaller. I've gone ahead and taken off the gear so we can take a closer look at the carrier. Here on the inside, like most ski carriers, you're going to have that same rubberized cushioned padding to protect your skis and prevent them from moving around.

Here on the inside of the EVO 6, you're going to have about 34 1/2" of usable space. On the EVO 4, you're going to have about 23" of usable space. It features large buttons on the ends that can easily be opened with gloves or mittens, so we can access our gear. Those same large buttons feature locks so no one can access or steal our things. The silver has an anodized finish.

The black has a mirrored finish. Both are going to be aerodynamic, and made out of an aluminum construction. The universal hardware is going to allow it to be attached to your round, square, arrow, elliptical, and most factory roof rack systems. The clamp has a rubber foot and a rubber coated strap. That way, it'll help grip your roof rack system and it won't scratch or harm the finish. The clamps have a unique design to where they cannot be removed from your roof rack system unless the carrier is open, and the lever on the inside is in the unlocked position. This prevents anyone from stealing it. With the carrier installed on our roof rack system, it's going to add about 4 3/4 of an inch to the height. The EVO 6 measures about 40" long. The EVO 4 measures about 28 3/4 of an inch long. When comparing this to the Thule SnowPack Extender, the SnowPack has an advantage because the arms telescope away from the base of the carrier, making it way easier to load and unload your skis. Another advantage that the SnowPack has, it uses a speed link mounting system, which makes it a tool free installation. The whole system is going to feature a limited lifetime warranty. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. Now, we've already got the rear one installed on our Yakima JetStream roof rack system. Let's go ahead and do the front one together. To get started, since we're going to be installing it on the Yakima JetStream roof rack system, we're going to be using the clamp style. Now, will also work with your Yakima round or square bars with the included adapters. If you prefer to mount it using the t-slot method, you'll need to pick up that kit sold separately with part number Y03098. Let's go ahead and open up our ski carrier, using the button on the end. With it opened up, we'll locate the single hole on the hinged end here. We're going to take our first clamp and put that through, so to make it easy we can turn it on its side. We'll be coming up through the bottom. Now you'll notice on the bottom here, we've got a little V shape there. We'll need to line up the V shape here on our clamp. That way we can put our bolt through. Hold it in place with our hand, and here on the other side you can see our bolt has come through. It's like a flat washer. You put that in place, and then we'll thread on our lever. Now, we're just going to get this loosely installed for now just like that. Here on the front, we've got two options. It looks a little bit different as they're elongated holes, and here it is on the bottom. You'll just want to use whichever one works best for your application. On some roof rack systems you don't have as much usable space, so you'll want to go with the one closest to the rear. Yours might be different. In ours, we're going to be using this one here. Now when we install our clamp on this side, we just want to make sure that our strap is going the same direction as the other. Then, just the same as we did before, on this side, put our flat washer and our lever. Now we're ready to install it on our roof rack system. We'll want to make sure that our carrier is open, our lever is up, and that our strap is undone. Now we can put it in place. We want to be sure that we line it up with our other carrier. Now we'll take our strap. We'll feed it underneath and fit it into the notch here. We don't want to close it up just yet, and we can do that for both sides. Now, just inside our clamp, we've got a little gray knob. By turning this clockwise, it's going to help draw in our rubber strap. That way, when we close it up, it has a nice tight, snug fit. If it still feels loose, you can tighten it up a little bit more until you've got a nice snug fit. Now, we need to make sure that our carrier has the right angle on top. Each one of our clamps has a pivot to help contour the shape of our roof. We just need to make sure that it's level with our other carrier. Once that is done, we can take our lever, turn it clockwise to tighten it up, and then we can fold it over. What I'm doing here is I'm just checking it, to make sure it's going to have a nice snug fit when I close it up. We can repeat the same process on the other side. You can install your ski carriers anywhere along your crossbar you want, to accommodate your other accessories. The one thing you need to be sure of is that your crossbar spread is between 12 and 36", depending on the length of your skis. Now with our carriers installed, let's go ahead and load up some gear. I've got two snowboards here. I've just got them stacked, and put them on first and push them all the way to the other side. Next I'll load up some skis. With all of our gear loaded up, now we can close them. Then, we'll lock them up. That's going to complete our look at the Yakima FatCat EVO line of rooftop ski and snowboard carriers.

Just got my Yakima Fatcat EVO 6 ski carrier (black finish) and I am stoked. Note that this is different than the Fatcat 6 (non-EVO, previous generation) carrier. This is my first ski carrier, but I and/or my kids ski about once a week at Alta and Snowbird when the lifts are running, so I expect it to get lots of use. Etrailer shipping was fast and item was packed in a sturdy secondary box. PROS: 1. I love the sturdy build and quality finish of the carrier. 2. The design allows many micro-adjustments to fit to your vehicle and to fit the skis. For instance the spring-loaded hinge on one end and the lock on the other end can naturally accommodate different thickness skis. 3. Carrier has a usable width (i.e. width of skis side by side) of 32.75 inches (832 mm). For those that are not skiing on 75-mm-wide skis from 30 years ago, this carrier might actually allow you to fit 6 pairs! 4. Separate mounting brackets for aero or for square/circle cross bars. The aero brackets fit securely on my Acura/Honda OEM cross bars. The flat part of your skis will be about 3 inches (76 mm) above your cross bars. 5. A built-in lift bracket that lifts by an additional 3 inches (76 mm) the hinged end of the carrier, if you have really tall bindings (I don't think I'll need to use it). 6. The aero brackets use a rubber coated steel strap to wrap under your cross bars. This strap has a quick release cam on one end that can be operated when the carrier is not key-locked. This means you can remove or install the carrier without tools in about 4 minutes, once you've done the initial install-related tuning. While the carrier seems sturdy enough to leave on the vehicle all winter, I expect I'll only install it on ski days. This feature really sets this model apart and for me was its biggest selling point. 7. Yakima packages the carrier in a nice-looking sturdy cardboard box with a flap lid. I can fit the two parts of the carrier in the box, with the brackets/straps still installed, for convenient storage (see picture). CONS: None so far, though I haven't yet actually hauled skis up the mountain! After this ski season is over and eTrailer asks me for a follow-up review, I'll let you know. I'm also thinking about seeing if the ski carrier can be attached to my small hitch-mounted cargo carrier. That would make loading and unloading the skis easier than on the roof. 452736

Comments

The Fatcat EVO 6 worked great all of last ski season in Utah. I routinely carried 2-5 pairs skis. Even though it is relatively easy to install/uninstall, I decided to leave it on the roof rack all winter, and it held up well. Only complaint is that sometimes the key-locking mechanism would be stiff. Otherwise was convenient and durable.

Great rack. We took it off after last season and it was very easy to put back on this season. We've held boards on the racks over 15 times in the last year and have had no problems with it. My only note to the manufacturer would be the lock. When trying to lock the mounts, if you have 4 boards on there you have to put alot of effort to lock the rack which makes it seem as though the key will break in the lock. Has not happened yet, though. 590476
