Kuat Grip Extender

The Kuat Grip lets you carry up to 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards on your vehicle's roof rack. Sliding arms make it great for use with your tall SUV, and large grip handles let you open the arms while wearing your heavy snow gloves. It's quick and easy to install and remove, but with the stylish look and low-profile design you may want to leave it on your vehicle all season long. It also includes locks to secure your gear to the Grip and the Grip to your roof rack.

Extends for Easy Loading and Unloading

Kuat Grip Extender extending over car

The Grip carrier has arms that slide out from the side of your vehicle. This makes it easy to load and unload your boards or skis without having to reach up over your car roof or use the inside of your vehicle as a makeshift ladder.

Kuat Grip Handles

Pull against the tabs on each tray to unlock them and slide them out. When you are done loading or unloading your gear simply slide each arm back into position. An audible click lets you know they're locked.

Large Grip Handles

Kuat Grip Handles

The carrier has oversized handles that are easy to grip even when wearing heavy winter gloves. Simply pull up on the handle to open the cradle and load your gear.

GripLock Rubber Teeth

Kuat Grip Extender GripLock rubber teeth

The teeth on the Grip are made of sturdy yet flexible rubber. They put a tight grip on your gear so you know it's not going slide off the carrier as you drive up the mountain. They are also soft so your gear won't get scratched or scuffed.

Easy Installation

Kuat Grip Flip mounts

The carrier installs quickly and easily with the included Flip mounts. They have rubber-coated stainless steel straps that wrap around your crossbars. Simply run a strap beneath the crossbar and hook it into the bracket on the opposite side of the mount. Use the included Allen key to tighten the straps in place.

Kuat Grip Angle Adjustment

You can adjust the angle of each Grip to accommodate the contour of your vehicle's roof. This allows the Grips to sit level to reduce wind resistance and noise as you drive. Simply loosen the angle adjustment bolts, level each Grip, then tighten the bolt.

Security for Your Skis

Kuat Grip One Key Security

The Grip comes equipped with a complete locking cylinder system. The arms lock to secure your skis to the carrier, and the mounting hardware locks to secure the carrier to your roof rack. All 6 cylinders are keyed alike so you'll only have to keep track of one key for the entire system.

Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Kuat Grip Ski and Snowboard Carrier on a 2022 Toyota RAV4

How's it going everyone It's Ethan here with etrailer. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Kuat Grip Ski and Snowboard Carrier on our 2022 Toyota RAV4. This ski and snowboard carrier is capable of holding four sets of skis or two boards. But we also have a larger size capable of holding six skis or four boards. Additionally, it comes in this black color, as well as a gray and pearl. But, the standup feature of this carrier system is this sliding tray.

Each as you can see, for ease of loading. So, I'll show you how they pull out and it is somewhat of a taller vehicle, and if you have heavier skis or snowboards, this just makes the loading process that much easier. Just put it on, slide the trays back in and close it down. Loading and unloading is made even easier by easy to push up handles. If you do have larger gloves on in the winter seasons, still easy to push up.

And as they're open, you can see these rubberized teeth that are on both sides, top and bottom, to cushion and keep your gear from sliding around. As we close, you can see it's got a couple different height that it'll ratchet down to. But, even if it does stick at this top height, it won't be coming loose. And close it all the way down, you can lock it and not be able to get your gear out of the carrier. In addition, you can see that there are lock cores on each of the feet of the actual carrier, which will lock the carrier to the rack.

So you can lock your gear and the carrier, and the carrier to the rack to secure everything. The clamps themselves are not entirely tool-free, but they're pretty easy to install. You'll just need the included Alan Key to tighten things down. They work pretty well on our factory bars here. They'll work specifically well on arrow and elliptical bars, like the ones we do have.

But they have a little indentation in the middle for your square and round crossbars, so they should work pretty well on any type of crossbars that are available. Something to consider when you're putting anything on the roof that is a little bit longer, like these skis, is will you get enough clearance to open your hatch In the case of the skis that we have here, we have about a foot of space when all is said and done. But relatively speaking, these are pretty short skis. So, you're going to want to figure out how much length your skis are. And again, we have a foot here, but something to keep in mind for your gear and how you load it up. Just to give you an idea of how much space you're going to be adding to the top of your roof, I'm gonna grab a measurement from the top of our crossbar to the top of the actual carrier. For us, it's about four and three quarters inches from the top of the crossbar to the top of the system. But it does rise a little bit in the back. The grip hinge system does move to accommodate the different sizes of your gear. Additionally, if you get the Kuat Grip 6, it's gonna take up about five more inches of your crossbar. We're already to the point where I don't know if there's any room on the side to actually load up more accessories or not. So, with five more inches, that's gonna take up about the full width of the crossbar. The weight capacity of the actual carrier is 165 pounds. But you have to factor in the weight capacity of your crossbars as well. Typically, the carrier's gonna be the lower of those two, but consider which one of those will be lower and use that to know how much you can actually store on the carrier itself. In addition to that, you could see that with the crossbars themselves, they're already gonna be covering the sunroof. But the more gear that you load onto the carrier, the less view you're gonna have outta that as well. Overall, the Kuat Grip is a really premium ski and snowboard carrier. The accessibility features with the sliding tray sets it apart from every other ski and snowboard carrier that we offer. As well as it just looks really nice on our RAV4. If you don't need the bells and whistles that this offers, I'd probably recommend looking into the Yakima FatCat EVO. You get a rise in the back, as well as in a similar aesthetic look. The Kuat Grips themselves are able to work with two track accessories if you wanna get a little bit more clearance that way. But again, like I said, I think they're a really solid roof rack option for our 2022 Toyota RAV4.

Super solid, like all things Kuat makes, and even a knucklehead like me was able to mount the ski racks in short order. Plus the Pearl White looks killer on my white 4Runner!

Eventhough we had a damaged packaging problem with missing parts, I will still give etrailer and my sales rep Joseph 5 stars for replacing rack with a new one in a very short amount of time. Things will happen but it is how the company take care of the problems quickly is how I rate them as well. The racks are excellent and although there is a lack of snow now, I know they will be great. Heavy duty racks that lock to the roof rails as well as lock the skis on as well. Can't beat Kuat products. They are made well and work well.

by:

Rack works great. Slide out makes loading and unloading much easier. So far we only put five pairs of fat skis on. Might have room for one more pair if I closed the gap between pairs but we didn’t need six pairs for that trip. Only problem was the rack froze up after driving through fresh rain. We had no problems with freezing while driving through salted slush. So far we’ve used it on two longer ski trips to CO from AZ. It’s quiet and strong.
We once had a cheaper rack release our top model, expensive, skis onto the highway at 65 mph. That’s why I bought a Kuat.

by:

These rack are great, I have them on both of my SUVs all winter. The etrailer seevice was excellent as well.

by:

Rivian R1T - easy install and great looks. Works fine with the Rivian crossbars. The slide out is a nice feature!

etrailer - great, great customer service! I had issues with delivery and you were there. You answered my emails promptly and was able to resolve it quickly. Amazing!

Thank you, Matthew (Rep), for your diligence in keeping me posted on my order. I
am grateful that this Kuat Grip Ski and Snowboard Carrier came on a timely basis.
Although it is a Christmas gift and will not be opened until then, the tracking of this
package and the excellent email correspondence was exceptional. Can't wait to give this gift as all of the products seem to be good quality. I am waiting for two more items to arrive and will comment once their arrival is here. Thank you for keeping me posted each day on my purchases!!!!

This is a fantastic rack. Had it all last winter. Not only did it keep our skis secure, it looked great doing it - I got a lot of people asking about it when they saw me using it in the parking lot. The slide out feature is very handy once you get the hang of it.

We did encounter issues with the slide out trays getting stuck with ice several times (I'm in the cold and wet NE) but I was able to work them free. We also had locks freeze up to the point where you couldn't get the key into the bolt to lock/unlock, which was annoying. Kuat support was great in sending new lock bolts when this happened though. I think the locks might need some weatherproofing to account for rain/snow getting in and freezing up the components, then allowing corrosion to set in and seize everything up.

But no regrets! I have this and the Base rack for our bikes in the warmer months, so there's kuat on my vehicle all year round now.

These were installed on a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid.

Pros:
Sharp
looking
Clear instructions
Relatively quick and straightforward assembly and installation
Slide-out is handy on taller vehicles
Smooth, sturdy action on all hinges, latches, and slide-out
Quick removal after initial assembly and install

They take about 30 minutes to assemble out of the box (for a first-time roof rack purchaser). All tools (two hexes and lock keys) are included. I assembled mine at our dinner table, so there isn’t any grease that will get messy.

The instructions don’t show that you have to use the keys to unlock the different latches, so heads-up on that.

Installation on a new and taller vehicle took a little time so as to get them centered and not scratch the roof. I needed a boost (in height) to be able to tighten down the hex bolts that tightens the straps around the cross-bars. I was using the Toyota cross-bars on my vehicle, and they’re quite a bit smaller in diameter than the preset strap lengths on the Kuats, so it took me about another 30ish minutes to situate the racks and then tighten (with included hex key) the car and lock them down (with the included keys).

Following the ski trip, I unlocked the strap latch locks, lifted the racks off, and put them on a shelf. Removal time was about 3 minutes, and the straps are pre-sized for our next trip.

I prefer to spend a little more for nicer stuff up front that works well and is sturdy and thoughtfully engineered. These racks do all the things you want them to without any real gotchas. While these are a bit more expensive than other alternatives, these are a worthwhile long-term investment for me.

by:

The instructions missed a key part when installing...loosen the universal strap first. Took me forever to figure out why I couldn't get it to snap in once on my crossbars. Otherwise so far I'm happy with it.

by:

The rack showed up at my door and was on the roof in less than 20 minutes. It is a very solid piece of gear. The handles and locking mechanisms are sturdy and robust. The slide out trays are smooth and don’t bind. I have an older Thule ski rack that slides out on another car…it’s been good. The Kuat is much better.

by:

Top quality exactly what I was looking for!

by:

Best purchase ever. I have wanted to get a name-brand ski rack ever since I was in Highschool 30 years ago. I had the option of buying a cheaper one but just didn't trust the quality. I am so glad I made the decision for this one. It is incredible. Best construction, strength, and ease of use I have ever seen.

by:

By far the most well designed and built ski racket on the market!

by:

Good ski rack

by:

These are really terrific!

by:

E-trailer is best in class. Items always come shipped securely. I don't purchase anywhere else.

by:

Amazing quality and functionality. Less than one hour from opening the box to skis on the roof.

by:

Timely shipping, great product.

Came quickly, looks awesome.

  • Can Kuat Roof Rack Accessories be Installed on Thule Roof Rack Using T-Slot
The Kuat roof rack accessories just use clamps but they also sit directly onto the crossbars so you would have the same amount of clearance whether they mounted in the T-Slot of Thule aero-style crossbars or not. For example, the Kuat Trio Roof Bike Rack, which comes in Gunmetal Gray # RU01 and Black and Polished Chrome # TR02, sits directly on the roof rack bars and then utilizes clamps that sit under the crossbars for the installation. The overall length of the Rhino Rack Ski Carrier part # RR573 that you referenced is 18-1/2 inches so to fit two of these you'd need bars that right at 36 inches in length. Another option that would work really well is the Kuat Grip Ski Carrier part # GRR6P which can carry up to 6 pairs of skis. • Ski and Snowboard Carrier That Will Fit Wide Crossbars
There are some options for ski and snowboard carriers that fit around wide crossbars, but there is not a way to fit the Thule SnowPack # TH7326 to wide crossbars as there isn't mounting hardware with a longer strap. If your current carrier won't fit the best option is another carrier, and a great one with a similar easy-to-use mounting system is the Kuat Grip. The Grip fits around crossbars up to 4-1/4" wide (I strongly recommend measuring your crossbars to ensure they fit this width),...

  • Will Lock Cores of Kuat Grip Ski and Snowboard Carrier GRR6P Fall Out If Unlocked
The lock cores of the Kuat Grip Ski and Snowboard Carrier part # GRR6P are not going to fall out if left unlocked with it's current design but also you really would want to have the rack locked when travelling just so there would be no chance it would release. Not that it necessarily would open when travelling but the lock mechanism definitely would prevent that.
