Video Transcript for Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Dogbone Spec Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Dogbone with the surge protection. This circuit analyzer will plug into a 30 amp receptacle at an RV park to test for improper wiring. Has a 125 volt circuit analyzer which will protect the RV from any improperly wired electrical boxes and power surges. It will protect your RV from power surges up to 2100 Joules. On the very front of the box, right here, it has the diagnostic lights that will indicate faults before you connect your 30 amp electrical cord to your RV. When you plug it in, there'll be a light up here and it will tell you that it's surge protected. Then it'll show you how to read the combination of lights to tell you what circuit is being affected, if any.

If you notice on the handles, they have these nice, sturdy, built-in handles on both ends to make unplugging very easy. Right up here, the 30 amp male end, this is what'll plug into the 30 amp receptacle at the RV park. Down here is the 30 amp female end which will connect to your RV's 30 amp electrical cord. This is a nice weather resistant PVC and polycarbonate which will protect the electrical components. If you notice on each plug-in, it is yellow in color which makes it very easy to see in any low light conditions. A few specs on this.

I want to give you the overall length of the cord from one end to the other. It's going to be right at 22 7/8 inches. The wire gauge that they use in this is 10 gauge wire. That should do it for the review on the Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Dogbone with the surge protection.

  • Does Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Reset Itself After a Surge
Camco does make a version of the Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Dogbone # CAM55312 that does automatically reset itself with the Voltage Protector part # CAM55301 but the part # CAM55312 will only take one surge before it needs to be replaced. It's like a fuse whereas the Protector is like a breaker in that it resets. I attached a review video for the Protector for you to check out as well.

  • Hooking Up Surge Protector for 30 Amp Camper to Plug Into 50 Amp Power Source
If your camper is wired for 30 amps I highly recommend using a 30 amp surge protector. The potential issue with using a higher-rated 50 amp surge protector is that it wouldn't be triggered soon enough to protect any appliances you have that are rated for 30 amps. To hook up your 30 amp camper to a 50 amp power source you will want to first connect a 30 amp voltage protector (like the Camco # CAM55301 for a reseting protector or # CAM55312 for a one-time-use protector) to the camper. Then...

  • What Does Open Ground Error Code Mean for 30 Amp Shore Power Socket
A single yellow light on the Camco RV Power Defender, part # CAM55312 that you referenced indicates an open ground like you can see on the picture I attached. This is typically caused by a broken wire or bad connection in side the socket/plug of your generator. So what this means though is that your 30 amp power socket can STILL work since your electrical path is between the hot and neutral pins. The ground is a path in case of a short in equipment. So basically you don't have as safe...

  • Can A 50 Amp Surge Protector Be Used On A 30 Amp Application?
The best option is to use a 30 amp surge protector like the Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Dogbone # CAM55312, but if you really wanted to use the 50 amp surge protector # SU99SR you'll just need to use the: -Mighty Cord RV Power Cord Adapter - 30 Amp Female to 50 Amp Male # A10-5030FBK with the Mighty Cord RV Power Cord Adapter Plug - 50 Amp Female to 30 Amp Male - Round # A10-3050AVP. • Recommended Adapter and Surge Protector for 50 Amp System to 30 Amp Shore Power
With your 50 amp camper system, I recommend using the Power Grip RV Power Maximizer - 50 Amp Female to 15 Amp Male and 30 Amp Male # CAM55025 to allow you to plug into 30 amp power supplies. Then you will use a surge protector like # CAM55306 for multiple surge protection or # CAM55313 for single time surge protection. Many people use the Camco Power Grip Cable with Lock # CAM44290 to protect their investment. Unless you convert your entire system to 30 amp, I don't recommend using a...

  • Recommended RV Surge Protector Voltage Regulator for 30 Amp Power System
For any trailer or motorhome system, I recommend using a surge protector to protect your trailer electronics and components from issue. For your 30 amp system I recommend at least the Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer Dogbone - 125V - 30 Amp # CAM55312 which will protect from a single surge has indicator lights of faults. This will require replacing after a surge and will not allow you to safely reconnect your system after a fault so you would be taking a risk if you reconnect....

  • How to Connect Surge Protector When Using 30 Amp to 50 Amp RV Adapter Power Cord
You have it exactly right. Starting at the RV you will plug in your 30A power cord like # A10-3025ED90 which will connect to the 30A surge protector, such as the Camco # CAM55312 or the multilevel # CAM55301. Then from the surge protector you will use your adapter like # A10-5030FHVP to plug into the 50 amp shore power outlet.

  • Troubleshooting A Camco Dogbone RV Surge Protector
It definitely could be a burnt out light or some other internal issue with the Camco RV Power Defender # CAM55312, but the only way to really test that theory would be to connect to an outlet that had an open ground or neutral to see if the red light kicks on and the left yellow light remained off. I don't recommend testing this as you could potentially cause an electrical fire. Unfortunately Camco doesn't make it to where you can actually fix any issues with the # CAM55312 and at this...

  • Blue Light On Camco RV Power Defender CAM55312 No Longer Illuminating
I spoke with my contact at Camco regarding your RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer # CAM55312. He said that if the blue surge protector light is no longer illuminating on your unit then it has experienced a surge episode (and protected your RV!). This may have happened with your 30 amp home outlet or it could have happened the previous time you used the analyzer at a campsite. Since this particular model provides one-time-event protection, it is no longer able to provide surge protection...

  • Comparison of Camco Circuit Analyzers and Voltage Protectors
Camco Power Defender voltage protectors, parts # CAM55301 and # CAM55306, have a bit more protection than the circuit analyzers, parts # CAM55310, # CAM55312, and # CAM55313. Both the analyzers and protectors have diagnostic lights for faults but beyond that the analyzers are just surge protectors. The voltage protectors go a little further by detecting the voltage and shutting off if the voltage level falls below 102V or goes over 132V. The voltage protectors also reset themselves...

You can still use your 50 amp extension cord to the outlet and just use an adapter like the Mighty Cord RV Power Cord Adapter Plug - 30 Amp Female to 50 Amp Male - Round # A10-5030AVP. You will still need a 30 amp cable like the Mighty Cord RV Power Cord with Handle - 30 Amp Male to Twist Lock Female Connector - 25' Long # A10-3025ED90 or if you have the retractable hardwired cable then you just use the adapter to utilize your extension cord. • Air Conditioner Circuit Breaker Trips when Using Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer CAM55312
It is possible that there is a short inside of the Camco RV Power Defender Circuit Analyzer # CAM55312 that is causing the circuit breaker to trip. In that scenario you would have to replace the Analyzer. It could also be that the AC is trying to draw more power than the CAM55312 can handle and in doing so is causing the breaker to trip. This analyzer is rated for 125 volts and 30 amps so if the power draw is beyond that then it can cause some problems.

The Camco RV Power Defender, part # CAM55312 can only withstand a single surge. It cannot reset its surge protector once its used, and will need to be replaced. There is a version that will reset itself though and for that part number you'd want # CAM55301.
