Very happy with my purchase! Assembly was very easy, just a handful of bolts. The included wrench is pretty awful to use so a good socket set comes in handy. I'm using it on a 2018 WRX with the EcoHitch hidden receiver. Plenty of ground clearance as the hitch is higher up than a typical under the car mount one, plus the rack steps up at the folding point to add even more. It's still at a perfectly comfortable height to load/unload. Even with a bike mounted on the inboard position there's still tons of clearance to get in the trunk. I've used it a couple times now, way better than the hanging style rack I had before. No chance of the bikes swinging and damaging my bumper. Only complaint is the lack of reflectors on the rack. I fixed this by putting some reflective tape on it so it's more visible whether folded down or up. 522486

Overall, I am satisfied with the bike rack. It carries the bikes well and we have taken it on a couple of long trips successfully. The only issue of concern is that the bolt that secures the rack to the trailer hitch appears to stripped at the head. This may be my fault for over-tightening the bolt, but it concerns me that it may loosen on long trips. 574354

I have only the highest regard for etrailer.com. Dealing with them is a real pleasure. The hitch can be assembled very easily with the enclosed directions. It will perform its duty of hauling 2 bicycles to and fro, and I am very happy about that. I was hoping that the rear hatch of the Honda CRV could be opened without removing the bicycles, which is very unhandy. If it were not for this unfortunate oversight, I would have rated it a 5 star. 126052

How much play is there in the bike rack on a CRV? Im thinking of gettein a 2 hitch, and therefore would have to use the 2 - 1-1/4 adapter.

I have a 1-1/4 hitch. I also questioned if it was strong enough to support 2 bicycles. We have light weight Trek Hybrid bikes, and there is no problem with movement going down the highway. I do not need the adapter for my hitch. I will mention that you cannot open the rear door on CRV when bicycles are loaded. That is my only complaint. Hope this helps you.

The main reason I purchased this bike carrier was because of the design. Unlike bike racks, this carrier holds the bikes by the wheels and a locking arm that slides down over the bike's upper frame tube. I find this far superior to bike racks which you simply hang a bike on. The greatest benefit of this carrier is that no matter what kind of bike you have, and no matter what kind of frame design the bike has, it will fit on the carrier, AND sit perfectly level, rather then dangle at a strange angle, simply by the bike frame. This is the best way to secure your bike, in opinion. The carrier is also adjustable, for just about any bike wheelbase, as the holders for the wheels are adjustable. The fact that the wheels are supported and strapped down also means that they will not be able to sway while in transit. True, this carrier weighs a good amount more then most bike racks, but it is not that big of a deal, and I would rather have my bikes secure then loose to flop around on a rack. It's great that this carrier also has built in locks, so you don't need to buy anything else to keep your bike safe. This is a really great product and does exactly what I need it to do. There is plenty of space between the rear bumper/trunk area of my car, even with a bike on the carrier, so clearance and accessing the trunk is no problem. Bottom line - if you want to haul your bike(s) around and not worry about swaying during transportation, this is the best carrier you'll find. 18559

I bought this rack to replace a Thule 2 bike hanging rack. It was delivered in just a few days. All the small parts were in the package and the instructions were easy to understand. I put it together and installed it in about 45 minutes. You could probably do it faster ( I am a 70 year old grandmother). I loaded up 1 bike and drove 30 miles to a trail I like. The drive was great- the bike was stable- no movement. It took me a minute or two to figure out how to load the bike on the inner rack the first time- the second time was easier.(Note when you are unloading the bike, if you detach all straps and top hook, the bike will fall over- duh! I won"t make that mistake twice!!!) I have now loaded a second bike on- that was very easy.I am looking forward to the next trip with two bikes. I drive a Honda Civic. This rack is great for my car. I think the hanging racks may be better on a bigger car. This does not obstruct my view to the rear. The locking mechanism is another great feature. I was using a chain lock before. Not necessary now. VERY VERY HAPPY with this product. 135466

Thanks Patrick. Rack is doing great. Rubber plastic parts are surprisingly durable. Main vertical bar hinge still working well despite some play. All in all a very good product.

I purchased this bike rack in January along with a hitch bar for my 1994 Acura Integra. I usually use it to carry my bike at least 3 times a week. Overall it's been a decent rack, but I have a couple of concerns. After just a couple of months the foam rubber covers on the top tube hooks started polishing the matte black finish on my bike top tube into a shiny spot. Shortly after that, the foam wore all the way through, making a hole in the foam, and now has irreparably damaged the finish on my bike top tube. I now have 4 spots of missing paint on the top tube of my brand new bike. My wife's new bike also has a large spot of missing paint after using this rack and carrying both our bikes on a 1,000 mile road trip. I have to use a piece of foam pipe insulation with velcro straps around my top tube just to keep the hook from further damaging my bike finish. There also seems to be a good bit of movement in the rotating joints, especially between the middle horizontal support and the vertical support with the hooks. I added a couple of washers on the bolt to help take out some of that movement. I was quite nervous at the amount of movement of the whole rack with 2 bikes on it during our 1,000 mile road trip, but everything made it safely, except for the damage to my wife's bike's top tube finish. The other thing is that this rack is very heavy, and quite cumbersome and difficult to move around in the garage when the rack is not on the car. I prefer to take the rack off the car when not carrying bikes, so it gets removed and installed quite a bit. This has also caused the black paint to get quite scuffed or come off completely in several spots where the rack fits into the hitch, and in the hitch receiver itself. I did add a good bit of safety reflector tape to help the rack stand out more to vehicles approaching from behind. I would say this is a good rack for weekend use, but probably not for using every day or even every other day as I do. It would be nice if Thule offered replacement foam pieces for the hooks, or something of better material that won't wear through so easily and damage the bike frame finish. 96191

Comments
Foam covers on the hooks continue to wear holes in them despite my attempts to twist the foam around to different spots. All 3 of our bikes have damage to the top tube paint finish from this rack. Also, the rack itself has a HUGE design flaw. Even when your bike is locked in place, someone can simply remove the carriage boltsnuts holding the vertical arm to the main hitch bar a few seconds with a power driver, and BOOM your bikes are gone.I do not recommend this rack to anyone. Look for a platform rack that secures the bikes by the tires only. That way the rack doesnt touch the cars paint or the bikes frame.

The customer service with etrailer deserves 5+ stars. Assembly was quick and painless. When I installed the rack on my 2015 Tundra, there was more "play" in the hitch than I would like. After review of the previous comments and a suggestion from customer service, I tightened the hitch pin as much as I could and the majority of the "play" was gone. This was my first bike rack and I was expecting no movement, silly me. I am happy with the purchase and happier with customer service. I can't speak to the durability, as I've only used twice. I will say, if you have the money, spend the extra for the 2" hitch instead of the 1 1/14" with adapter. I wish I had. HOWEVER, the product seems very sturdy! 508487

Comments
The product has held up well after a year. I wish I had saved my money and purchased the 2 model instead of the one with the adaptor. The hitch has more movement than I would prefer. But overall, its gotten my bike to and from many rides. WHATEVER you do, DO NOT forget to lock the top bar and secure the wheels. If you dont, your bike WILL FALL OFF. Unfortunately speaking from experience. That was no fault of the hitch, completely user error

This rack arrived in good condition in three business days, was quick and easy to assemble, and works as advertised. It fit very well as is on my 2008 Kia Sedona, with good road clearance. I took the time during assembly to tighten every nut, even the ones that were already on the unit. I had read that some people thought the rack moved a lot but I suspect that they need only tighten it up to reduce that substantially. The only time I have seen it move much is when I drive over rough RR tracks. It is VERY easy to put the bikes onto and with the built-in locks they are very secure with no extra effort or time. Other racks rely on your normal bike lock but that would mean scuffing or scraping the paint off the bikes from the movement during transport where this rack secures the bikes with paddedbars. With the rack under the wheels, the bikes are secure from damage from anything hitting underneath and the bikes cannot swing like they can on a hanging rack. The rack easily folds up when out riding so that it does not stick out from the vehicle. We have nice bikes and this rack keeps them that way, and is quick and easy to use. Excellent design and execution - thanks Thule - it seems rare that a product does such a good job! 34672

I purchased a Thule 990 XT hitch mount bicycle carrier from etrailer on October 19th, 2017. As usual, the package arrived without incident and a day earlier then promised! Etrailers price was the lowest I could find, and shipping was included @ no additional cost. Assembly was fairly easy and the bike carrier mounted on my Ram 2500 without any problems. The carrier holds our 2 mountain bikes without any issues, and appears sturdy enough. The real test will be during our up-coming 2000 mile journey from Az to Ohio. However, I did have one problem with the product. The bolts included (square head carrier bolts) with the product are either aluminum, or a very low grade steel product. Three of the bolts either stripped, or lost couple of threads during the assembly process. The directions state to tighten the nuts securely, but not much effort was required to strip the bolt threads. When I get a chance, I will replace all of the bolts with grade 8 stainless steel bolts and nuts. Otherwise, this was another flawless purchase from etrailer! 446127

I'm disappointing in this rack because I have had issues with it melting. I have been using this rack to carry my mountain bike from Phoenix to my cabin in Pinetop, AZ. It's about a 3 hour drive and mainly uphill. I noticed on the first trip that one of the levers used to lock the wheel tray to the cross bar was lose. I didn't think much of it at first. On my second trip, I realized that the exhaust from the truck was blowing on the wheel tray and hold down latch. The heat caused the latch to melt and the wheel tray to warp. This rendered the inside rack useless. The tray and latch are about 2 feet from exhaust. I read many of the reviews and I didn't see any other issues with melting of the components. I guess I will just have to use this as a single bike rack. 100380

I read your review on the Double Track and wanted to follow up with you. We have not heard of this happening before with that much room, so thanks for letting us know.I have a replacement strap assembly and cam lever in the mail headed to you. You can set the cradle up with the latch for the strap and the cam lever on the other side of the cross bar. Like we have it setup in our first photo on our site or step 6 in the instructions. That way the latches and levers are not exposed.

My husband and I assembled the Thule Doubletrack TH990XT bike carrier on the back of our 2013 Chevy Equinox. All of the parts were included and we were able to follow the enclosed instructions. It took us less than an hour and we are not usually very good at this sort of thing. We haven't taken the bikes out yet, but we like how the carrier can be left on the car and still gain access to the cargo area. We can even have both bikes on the carrier and still get the car in the garage. The upright tube and hook assembly bolts seem to be lose and we weren't sure if it should be tightened. Thought maybe it was lose in order to fold the assembly down when not in use. The other thing we noticed is that the wheel tray can still be moved when the cam lever is in the closed position. Tried to tighten them, but then cam lever couldn't be closed. It is much easier to put my small woman's bike on this carrier than on the kind that hang off the back of the car. So far we are pleased with our purchase and look forward to taking our bikes out on the carrier. 86735

Comments
Since the tray was loose at first, then after tightening it became too tight to close, there should be something in between. You can use partial turns on the cam lock to find the sweet spot so that the lever will provide some resistance, but not have to be forced down.

We really like our Thule doubletrack bike carrier. We have made a few round trips from MI to FL and we have had no problems carrying our bikes on the long trip. I would recommend this carrier to anyone. I have also been very satisfied with etrailer customer service. One of the wheel carriers fell off and was gone. I started to search online to find the part I needed and decided to contact customer service to be sure I ordered the right part. The customer service rep not only determined the part I needed but also found out that the carrier was still under warranty so there was no cost. I received the part very quickly. I was concerned about knowing how to put the part on and they emaed me a link to a video to show exactly how to install it. Great customer service! Thanks!

I had been waiting to buy a really nice bike rake - someone backed into my car though and damaged my old rack. I found this rack online. The reviews and info seemed very good, I liked the design. I was concerned that it might not be high quality - the price was excellent! It arrived super fast. At first I was fearful I had made a bad decision, assembly required. I could not have been more wrong. Assembly was a cinch (even for me). A tool was included so I didn’t have to scramble and find tools that fit. The rack looks great. I love how it folds up when not in use on the back of my car (I have a Prius with back up sensors and parking assist - which I couldn’t use because the old rack obscured the sensors). Customer service was above and beyond. It is so refreshing to find a great quality product at a reasonable price. I highly recommend this product! 680023

Bike rack arrived with no packets of hardware!! Called e-trailer and an entire new package was sent. It arrived today and everything was there. The rack is on my car now. It took me a little longer than most people to assemble (judging from their reviews), but it was not difficult to do. Even though customer service could not just send hardware, everything worked out and the original box was returned via UPS. Customer service at e-trailer is first rate and I appreciate status updates and their helpfulness. 79795

I'm so glad we chose this Thule two-bike rack. It's very sturdy and well made (in the USA). We took it out on a test run of 100 miles this weekend through some unpaved and very bumpy small roads to our bike path, and it stood up to the test with flying colors! I also love the fact that it has a locks for the trailer hitch and for the vertical handles for the bikes already built in, which make them very handy and convenient. When not in use, it folds up very neatly against the back of our SUV. The customer service that I received from etrailer.com was also top notch. This item was back ordered, and they kept me informed through out the process. I highly recommend this product and the company. 228208

This bike carrier is great! With my old carrier, I was always looking back watching the bike swaying back and forth as I wondered if the bikes would make it to our destination. This Thule carrier takes out all of the sway and holds both bicycles steadily and securely. It securly holds both male and female bicycles equally well. 74668

I really like this bike rack. Assembly and installation were a breeze and etrailer.com shipped it fast. All of the information on etrailer.com (videos, pics, reviews) were great in helping me decide what to get. I chose this rack because (for me) it had the best mix of features/quality/price. I like the fact that it comes with locks to lock the bike to the rack and also to lock the rack to the vehicle. However, as another reviewer pointed out, this rack can be manipulated to a point (depending on bike type, I suppose) to defeat the lock that secures the bike to the rack. Not a big deal, really... I'll just add a cable lock. I also had a bit of a problem with the lock cylinders and universal change key in that the change key would not go into 2 of the 3 lock cylinders, preventing installation of the cylinders into the rack. I contacted Thule directly and they sent replacement lock cylinders, which arrived in less than a week. All said, I am very happy with this rack. I also have an inexpensive hitch-mount hanging rack that is not very sturdy and difficult to load bikes onto. My bike and my daughter's bike have different frame designs and the Thule TH990XT (platform-style) easily accommodates both bikes. It is a breeze to load the bikes onto this rack and the bikes are secure after doing so (with the exception mentioned earlier that will require a cable lock for extended security). As for etrailer.com, I will definitely be a repeat customer. 135630

Delivery was great, no negatives for etrailer.com. is great and serves its purpose well. Locking washers and bolts varied from product list, but not so much that one could not understand the substitutions. I laid all the parts out to the provided chart and it was obvious which pieces were substituted. All substitute parts are acceptable, but it is a little troubling when one is going by a part chart and there are substitutions. No product problems, just a mild unexpected. I drove with the new trailer hitch and bike rack loaded with my Kestrel 4000 and had no problems. Easy loading. Trunk access with the rack in place. I would submit that reflective tape be added to the rack for when it is on the car but folded for non-use as well as the outer rack bottom. I will do this myself, but it would be nice for it to be in place upon purchase. Obviously, a minor critique, but a worthy addition. 34133

Purchased this to transport bikes on our 09' Saturn Vue. Possably some taillight/license plate obstruction but depends on closeness of vehicle behind. It could use washers to prevent the middle bar from having foward/back play. We did stratigically add reflecters for both stowed and transport positions since the rack basically blends with our car. Extremely easy to use and since there is allot of space between car & rack, you can remove the rear bike w/o disturbing the front bike and also open the car hatch w/o bike removal. Arrived slightly damaged with some gouches and paint scratches that appeared to be the result of bad packaging but touched up with some Rustoleum paint which we had on hand. This was our 3rd purchase from etrailer.com and will definately continue to purchase from them. The shipment came within a couple days and the email communication from them was fabulous and informative. 26891

We've had this bike carrier for a year now, though we don't use it a lot (bought it mainly for my daughter's biking summer camp). The weeks I do use it, it's been great. Easy to adjust for various sizes of bikes, easy to get bikes on and off, and the locking mechanism makes me feel safe walking away from it for a short while. (I wouldn't leave bikes on it unattended for long periods because bike theft is a big problem where I live and I wouldn't put it past someone to figure out how to steal the bikes, given enough time! If I needed to do that, I would've looked for a carrier with a more robust locking system for the bikes.) The bikes are stable when loaded and strapped down and the carrier feels stable on the car. 524088

This is a very convenient bike rack. Loading and unloading is very quick. My wife's bike has a women's frame, and even on the lowest setting the hook doesn't quite capture it. Still, it does much better than some other bike rack designs. It folds out of the way nicely when not in use. When it is folded, access to the trunk is slightly blocked but it is very easy to fold it back down to access the trunk. It holds two bikes capably, however it does sometimes sway alarmingly when loaded. I'm sure it's secure, but still. This bike rack has been an excellent investment, and has greatly expanded our bike riding range. 892448

Good product. Easy to use. I would like it to fit tighter in an 2" receiver. 887252

A well designed bike rack that is quick and easy to set up and remove. There is still some movement that occurs while driving, though it wasn't enough or in such a manner that threatened the bicycles. 876815

Ask the Experts about this Thule Hitch Bike Racks

  • Thule Doubletrack # TH990XT vs. Swagman Chinook # S64683
The real benefits that you get from the Thule Doubletrack # TH990XT is that it weighs 36 lbs, it is made right here in the USA, and the trays are a little more customizable since they are on their own "tracks". If you don't mind the extra 11 lbs of the Swagman Chinook # S64683 and you are able to utilize the wheel trays just fine (which typically isn't a problem) then I recommend the Chinook. It is at a lower price point, comes with everything that the Doubletrack does, has the higher...

  • Is There a License Plate Bracket for the Thule T2 Pro XT Bike Rack
To add a license plate bracket to any bike rack will require you to modify the bike rack. If you are willing to do that with the Thule T2 Pro XT2, # TH9034XT Black or # TH9034XTS Silver, then your best bet would be a bracket with a light in the event that you are carrying your bikes at night. I recommend the Optronics License Plate Light w/ Mounting Bracket # LP55CB. To provide power to the light the easiest thing to do would be to install the T-One # 118467 which is a plug-in wiring...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2016 Ram 1500 with RamBox
There are several different ways you can haul bike(s) on your 2016 Ram 1500. The best way to do so would pertain to what type of bike(s) you have and how you would like to carry them i.e. roof, hitch, bed etc. However, since you have the RamBox and it is not ideal to lift a bike on top of a truck, I recommend using a hitch mounted bike rack as there is also a good chance that you have a trailer hitch installed on your Ram. We have a few option which are platform style, hanging style,...

  • Replacement Threaded Hitch Bolt for a Thule DoubleTrack Bike Rack
The threaded hitch bolt you will need for your Thule DoubleTrack # TH990XT is # 853-5917. The nuts inside the shank though are not available. Nor is the shank itself. But you could either use the new bolt or a tap and die set to cut new threads in the nuts.

  • Comparing Swagman Chinook S64683 and Thule Doubletrack TH990XT Platform Hitch Bike Racks
I am happy to help you make your choice between the two excellent platform bike racks you mentioned, the Swagman Chinook # S64683 and the Thule Doubletrack # TH990XT. Where the Swagman Chinook wins the comparison is in weight capacity (45-lbs per bike vs. 35-lbs for the Thule) and long wheelbase compatibility (up to 50-inches vs. 46-1/2 for the Thule). The Thule weighs about 10-lbs less and is USA-made while the Swagman is heavier and is made offshore. The two carriers are otherwise...

  • Can I Use An Old Style Road Bike With Fenders On A Kuat Transfer 2 Bike Platform Rack
For bikes with fenders there really isn't a way to use a bike rack like the Kuat Transfer part # TS02G that uses wheel mounts. Instead you'd have to go with a bike rack that grabs the bike by the frame like the Thule DoubleTrack # TH990XT. This is a very nice rack that's about the same price that will work well for you. It's similar in weight too at 36 lb.

  • Can Thule DoubleTrack Carry Bikes with Step Through Frames
Sounds like you are wanting to carry a bike with a step through frame with the Thule DoubleTrack part # TH990XT that you referenced. This is definitely possible as the hook for the frame can come down and secure to a step through frame like what you have. I attached a picture that shows this as well. If the frame is super low like an e-bike might have we have the bike frame adapter bar part # UB01 which would help out with that as it attaches to the seat post and steering stem and provides...

  • Will Bike Rack Blocking View of License Plate Cause Issue with Thule DoubleTrack
What's interesting is that most states have similar laws about the license plate not being obstructed which is what a bike rack will at least partially do, but we've yet to hear about a situation where a police officer gave someone a hard time for their bike rack. The Thule Doubletrack # TH990XT that you referenced would block the view of the plate to a certain extent but most likely would not get you in trouble.

  • Recommended Bike Rack for 2019 Audi A3 Convertible
For your 2019 Audi A3 Convertible, I recommend The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Class I # 24930. This hitch will allow you to have a hitch mounted bike rack so no direct rack contact with your vehicle. Then the most popular bike rack for your vehicle is the Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack # TH990XT. • Is An Adapter Bar Needed for Womens Bikes on the Thule Doubletrack TH990XT
The majority of women's bikes will work on the Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack part # TH990XT without an adapter bar like the Swagman Deluxe Bike Frame Adapter Bar part # 64005. However, there are women's bikes like the Electra Townie which have a very deep drop tube and will require an adapter bar. The main thing you need to be sure of is that either bike does not exceed 35 lbs or have tires wider than 2.5". I have attached a photo for you of this bike rack used on a women's...

  • Yakima TwoTimer vs Saris Freedom vs Thule Doubletrack for Apartment Storage and Price
When it comes to pricing and storage the Thule Doubletrack # TH990XT is the best option over the Yakima TwoTimer # Y02468 and the Saris Freedom # SA4412B. This bike rack comes with bike and rack locks and when it is folded it sits about 6" away from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the bike rack. Since your wife's bike has a step-through frame that sits 16" off of the ground though you will need to use an adapter bar like part # UB01 for it to secure the bike. The...

  • Will the Thule Doubletrack Work with Fat Tire Bikes
I do have options for you but the Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack will only fit tires up to 2.5" wide and they do not make a fat tire adapter kit for this rack. Therefore, you can either let some of the air out of the tires and squish them into the wheel trays like you have been or you can upgrade to the Thule DoubleTrack Pro 2 Bike Platform Rack part # TH9054 which accepts bikes with tires up to 5" wide. • Location of Serial Number on Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack
I spoke with my contact at Thule regarding your Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack # TH990XT. He stated that the serial number should be located on the underside of the rack, on one of the platform bars. It is also listed on the box if you still happen to have it. Otherwise, he did also state that if you are simply looking to register the rack for warranty purposes, all they really need for this is a proof of purchase. They do not need the serial number for warranty claims.

  • Best 2-Bike Hitch Rack for Heavy Bikes That Is Easy to Use
You're right that few hitch platform bike carriers can handle heavy bikes like your e-bike. The Thule DoubleTrack # TH990XT can handle only 35-lb bikes. But Thule also offers another 2-bike platform carrier that will give you all of the features and compatibility you're looking for, the EasyFold # TH903202. • Can Thule Doubletrack Bike Rack # TH990XT Support Fat Tire Bikes
I wish I had better news but Thule does not currently offer a longer strap that's compatible with the Doubletrack Platform Bike Rack # TH990XT and we do not know of one from another brand that will work. This particular bike rack can only support tire widths of up to 3 inches so your options are to either try to modify a new strap to secure the wider tires on your bike (which will void the warranty and could negatively affect the rack's integrity) or go with a new bike rack that is designed...

  • What Type of Hitch Bike Rack Would be Easiest for Reverse Camera to See Through
For all the things you are looking for the Thule DoubleTrack # TH990XT is a really great choice as the center post of the rack is pretty narrow which would allow great visibility through it. The only type of rack that might have better visibility would be one that uses wheel hooks instead of a center post like the Thule T2 part # TH9045 but this style is typically quite a bit more expensive. Unfortunately, if your bike exceeds the tire size limit, there's no way to use the Thule Doubletrack, part # TH990XT. However, you do have other, comparable options available. I recommend Hollywood Rack's TrailRider for Fat Bikes, part # HR200Z-FB. Between these two options though I do recommend going with the Swagman Chinook # S64683 for a few reasons.
