Road Runner 5 Hitch Bike Rack

When it comes to transporting your bikes, the Road Runner bicycle rack speeds past the competition. It has all the standard features you'd expect from a hitch-mounted bike rack and includes plenty of extras that are sure to keep your bikes safe and secure. And unlike many other racks, the Road Runner doesn't require tools to install the anti-rattle device or additional bungees or straps to secure your bikes - it's all included and built in.

Anti-Wobble Handle

Road Runner Shank/Anti-Wobble Handle

An integrated anti-wobble handle on the front of the carrier tightens the bike-rack shank to your hitch receiver to prevent the rack from rattling around inside the receiver. You don't need to pull out a wrench every time you install the rack on your hitch - just turn the easy-to-access handle to keep the rack from rattling. And you can tighten the thumbscrew on the back of the upright mast to help keep the mast from wobbling.

Dual Arms

Road Runner Arms

Constructed of rugged steel with a sleek black powder coat finish, the Road Runner features dual arms that support your bikes and better accommodate women's, children's and alternative frames. (An adapter bar [HRBA-PRO - sold separately] may still be required.) The arms easily fold down when the rack is not in use - just unscrew the hand knob on each arm, lower the arms into the brackets, and tighten the knobs down.

Anti-Sway Cradles

Road Runner Cradles

Rubber anti-sway cradles with straps firmly grip your bike's frame at three points to keep it from swaying front to back. This helps to keep your bikes from hitting each other and your vehicle during transit. The cradles rotate and slide along the arms, so you can easily adjust them based on the type and number of bikes you're transporting.

Anti-Sway Bar

Road Runner Anti-Sway Bar

The Road Runner makes great strides to keep your bikes secure. An anti-sway bar folds out from the bottom of the upright mast to provide another tie-down point for the four bikes mounted outside of the mast. Four included straps secure your bikes to the anti-sway bar to prevent the wheels and the pedals from spinning, keep the front wheels straight, and minimize the up and down movement of your bikes - all of which will help prevent bike-to-bike and bike-to-vehicle contact. This is especially helpful on lengthy road trips when you may experience crosswinds. And you can use the integrated safety strap to help tie down the bike that's mounted inside of the upright mast and closest to your vehicle.

The anti-sway bar is simple to use. Just lower and tighten the bar with the built-in hand knob. Then thread one of the safety straps through your bike's front and rear wheels and through a loop on the anti-sway bar before tightening the strap down with the plastic buckle.

Tilting Mast

The Road Runner's upright mast tilts forward to allow access to your vehicle's cargo area. Once your bikes are unloaded, just remove the linchpin from the base and tilt the rack away from the vehicle.

Security System

Road Runner Hitch and Cable Locks

The Road Runner includes a hitch lock that secures the bike carrier to your vehicle's 2-inch receiver. The rack also comes with an 9-foot-long cable lock that can be fed through a welded steel loop on the bike rack. The vinyl-coated, braided steel cable will deter theft of your bikes.

Both the cable lock and the hitch lock have push-to-lock bodies and are conveniently keyed alike. Keyhole covers on the locks keep out dirt and moisture.

Video Transcript for Hollywood Racks Road Runner 5 Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hollywood Racks Road Runner 5-bike rack, part number HR520. The Hollywood Racks Road Runner 5 is the ideal bike rack for you and your family. It lets you carry up to 5 bikes safely on the back of your vehicle. It offers several anti-sway components including the anti-sway cradle and the stabilization straps. These are going to help prevent bike to bike contact as well as bike to vehicle contact. It also comes with a 9 ft.

long anti-theft cable lock and a locking pin, both of which are key to lock, that way you know your bikes are secure and safe when you're traveling. Here at the end of the dual arms, we have 2 reflectors, this is going to help keep our bikes and our bike rack visible at night. We've gone ahead and removed the bikes so we can get a closer look at the bike rack itself. The dual arms are going to provide excellent support for our 5 bikes. The cradles are adjustable along the dual arms to help prevent bike to bike contact. The adjustable straps and the cradles themselves are constructed of a soft rubber so it's not going to harm or scratch our bike.

The larger cradle is going to be our anti-sway cradle. That's going to help reduce a lot of the sway movement from side to side when we're on the road. The anti-sway cradles also feature raised grooves to help accommodate our brake lines and cables. It also provides a good cushion for our bike. The longer brace provides anchor points for our stabilization straps to run through which are going to help keep our wheels and tires from spinning while we're on the road. Both the dual arms and the lower brace fold for convenient storage when not in use.

We'll simply under the knob rotate it down and tighten it back up. Now we'll just repeat that same process for the other arm as well as our lower brace. Another main feature about the Road Runner 5 is its ability to tilt so we can gain better access to our rear hatch. We'll come around back, we'll loosen up our thumb screw, then in the front we'll pull out our pin and clip. As you can see, it allows us to tilt it out and get into our rear hatch. Here behind the center mast, we have a thumb screw.

This is going to act as a stabilization device. You could see without that being tightened up our center mast just moves around a whole lot, so we'll tighten up that thumb screw and most of that movement is gone. The anti-rattle tightening lever in the front as well as the locking pin make it a no tool installation. The whole bike rack is made up of a sturdy steel construction with a weight capacity of 150 pounds. It's got a nice black powder coat finish so it's going to resist rust and corrosion and it features a limited lifetime warranty. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. Now this is going to be for your 2" x 2" receiver, so let's go ahead and load the shank up. Now when we slide it in, we're going to slide it all the way up to the weld stop here until it hits the receiver as you see there. Once that's in place, we'll take our pin and lock, slide that through, put the lock into place, then we're going to come back here for our anti-rattle device. We're just going to turn that clockwise and get it nice and tight. The nice thing about this is it's going to help reduce some of the play and the rattle within our hitch and our bike rack. As you can see without it being tightened up, a little bit of play there. Let's get it nice and snug and we'll give it another shake. As you can see, most of the play is gone. Now let's go ahead and get our bike rack ready for our bikes. We're going to come over to our dual arms here and we're going to loosen up these knobs. That's going to allow us to push out our arms, raise them up and put them back in place. After that, you can just tighten down the knob. Do that on both sides. Then we can go ahead and put our lower brace in place. Same thing there, it uses the same knob, loosen it up, rotate it, and then tighten it back up. Now let's go ahead and load up our first bike. We're going to start back here. Let's go ahead and undo our straps. Now also when loading up your first bike, it's important to load up the heaviest bike first. With that being said, we're going to grab our heaviest bike, bring it around and put it on back. Now once we have that in position, let's go ahead and run our straps over the top and get that secure. Now let's go ahead and get ready to load up our second bike. Same thing here, we'll undo our straps first and then we'll bring it up. We'll work our way towards the back. Now with our second bike loaded up, let's go ahead and grab one of our lower brace straps. What we're going to do with this is we're going to run it through both rear and front tire down through the islet, we'll run it through the buckle, we'll get it nice and tight around the bike. We'll get that nice and secure and that's going to help hold the bike together and keep it from moving around a whole lot. We can just tie up the excess and then finish loading up our bikes. Now let's strap down our last bike. Right here, this is going to be our anti-sway cradle. We're going to make sure that our down tube or our seat post is pushed nice and snug right up against it, we'll bring our strap around and then work our way back to the other straps. Here we go. Now for some bikes such as women's, children's and bikes with alternative frame styles, they may require the need for a bike adapter bar to sit evenly on the bike rack. Now with all of our bikes all loaded up, let's go ahead and run our stabilization strap around all of the bikes. I'm going to bring it around the center mast, then around the bike, then just work my way around through each of the bikes and then back through itself. We'll just simply put it through the buckle and pull it nice and tight and we've got it. Now for added security, Hollywood Racks has included a cable lock. I'm just going to drape this over the bikes, around the bike rack. I'm just going to bring it around everything and then lock it in place. Perfect. Now with all those loaded up, let's go ahead and take it on our test course and see how it performed. Here on the test course, let's go into our slalom. This is going to show the side to side action such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then to our alternating speed bumps, this is going to show a twisting action such as going over potholes or uneven pavement. Then finally onto our solid bumps, this is going to show an up and down action such as coming in and out of a driveway or out of a parking lot. That's going to complete our look of the Hollywood Racks Road Runner 5-bike rack, part number HR520.

This four bike rack is superior. We have a Jeep with the mounted rear spare tire, so we needed an extra long connector piece. Everything works great, a good price, great customer service. Thanks fr filling an unusual need. 380176

etrailer was very helpful in picking out the right trailer hitch mounted bike rack and after this weekend of biking (and carrying our bike on the rack), I can say the rack worked great. It was easy to load and held the bike steady. Many thanks. 523029

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Road Runner in Hitch Bike Racks

I bought my first Hollywood rack 15 years ago and am still using it. I got a smaller hitch and needed a new rack - so of course I got a new Hollywood 4-bike carrier. It works great! When I've need parts or had questions, the company has been very responsive. I wish all companies made stuff this good! 363316

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Road Runner in Hitch Bike Racks

This is my second Hollywood 4 bike rack with a 2" hitch. The first one was purchased in 2002 and was destroyed in a vehicle accident in May of 2019. I must say the new one is just as good as the first one with improvements in the bike latching system. Nothing on the current market compares with the quality of this product. I know I will have many more years of use and durability. etrailer is a great company to deal with. I was kept abreast of the shipping and transit status of the HR400 from the time of order until delivery. I would definitely buy from etrailer again. 666597

If the unit is not loaded down with bikes, it rattles constantly. Which get annoying. I understand there is a tension handle that can be cranked but the design still allows for rattling. 654798

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Road Runner in Hitch Bike Racks

I've been using this bike rack for over a year and am overall very happy with the performance and quality. It is easy to remove and reinstall, and the straps are sturdy. There is a little slop in the fit between the hitch and the bike rack itself, even with the locking pin tightening mechanism. 521832
