SportRider SE Hitch Bike Rack

The Sport Rider Special Edition platform-style hitch bike rack makes it simple to carry up to 4 bikes on the rear of your vehicle. This versatile rack is easy to use, and it features locking frame hooks and adjustable wheel trays so you can quickly load and unload your bikes. A locking hitch pin with an anti-rattle system tightens the rack's shank to your hitch receiver to prevent it from rattling around inside the receiver.

1400 SE 2-Piece

The Sport Rider SE consists of a two-bike base unit and a removable two-bike extension unit, allowing you to use the carrier as either a two- or four-bike rack. The two pieces make the rack easy to handle and install because you can slide the base into your hitch and secure it before adding the extension. A locking hitch pin with an anti-rattle system tightens the rack's shank to your hitch receiver to prevent it from rattling around inside the receiver.

Locking, Ratcheting Hooks

1400 SE Hooks

Constructed of rugged steel with a sleek black powder coat finish, the Sport Rider SE uses locking frame hooks to secure your bikes. The ratcheting hooks are easily adjusted along the vertical mast and lock securely in place. The push buttons allow the hooks to slide up the ratcheting system to allow for bike removal. The lock cores keep the hooks from being moved up or down on the mast to deter theft. The hooks are different sizes and each one functions independently, meaning the rack can carry four bikes of the same or different heights.

Adjustable Wheel Holders

1400 SE Wheel Holders

The wheel holders accommodate bicycles with wheelbases up to 60 inches, and you can adjust the wheel hoops by sliding them along the horizontal arms. They are secured in place with hand knobs. Velcro-like hook-and-loop straps secure your bike's wheels to the holders.

Fat Bike Wheel Cradles

If you want to carry a fat bike on the Sport Rider SE, you can replace the rack's wheel trays with specifically-designed fat bike cradles (HRSPRWH-F-HD - sold separately).

Folding, Tilting Design

Sport Rider SE Tilting Spring Pin

The rack tilts, with or without bikes loaded, for easy access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. Simply remove the pivot pin, pull the bottom quick-release spring pin, and lower the rack.

Sport Rider SE Folding Spring Pin

The rack also folds up against the back of your vehicle when it's not in use. To raise the rack, just pull the upper quick-release spring pin and lift.

Easy Installation with Locking Hitch Pin

The Sport Rider SE easily installs in your hitch with the included locking hitch pin. Just slide the shank into your receiver and insert the hitch pin. The frame hook locks and the hitch locks are conveniently keyed alike.

1400 SE Anti-Wobbles

An integrated anti-wobble handle on the front of the base unit tightens the rack's shank to your hitch receiver to prevent it from rattling around inside the receiver. You don't need to pull out a wrench every time you install the rack on your hitch - just turn the easy-to-access handle to keep the rack from rattling. A second lever secures the two-bike extension to the base of the rack.

The included 8' long cable attaches to the hitch pin to help secure 2 bikes to Sport Rider rack. The extension cable can be added to the 8' cable to help secure 4 bikes to the rack.

Add-On Adapters

Sport Rider SE Cargo Carrier

If you want to carry both 2 bikes and extra gear, an add-on cargo basket (HR1485 - sold separately) is available.

 Hollywood Racks Wheel Hoop Adapters

If you want to use the rack to transport a kid's bike with 16" or 18" wheels, wheel hoop adapters (HRSW-ADP-2 - sold separately) are available.

If you want to transport one recumbent delta trike or one recumbent tadpole-style trike with the Sport Rider SE, you can use the HRTRK-ADP adapter (sold separately). Or if you want to transport one standard bike and either one recumbent delta trike, one recumbent tadpole-style trike, or one adult trike, then you can use the HRTRK-ADP-2 adapter (sold separately).

Note: The trike adapters can only be used with the Sport Rider SE's two-bike base unit.

Video Transcript for Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4 Bike Platform Rack Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4 Platform Style Four Bike Rack, part number HR1400Z. If you like to take your bikes with you on long vacations, the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4 is motor home approved. The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider is the perfect bike rack for a family or a group of friends. It allows us to carry up to four bikes with a few extra nice features. It holds our four bikes by their frames, which means it's going to work with a wide variety of bikes. We've got a mountain bike, a road bike, a bike with alternative frame style, and a kid's bike. How it works is, the frame hook puts down pressure on our bike's top tubes into the front and rear cradles, and then a hook and loop strap keeps our wheels in place.Like most premium style bike racks, we can tilt it away to gain access to our rear hatch, and it does this even with all four bikes loaded.

How you do that is, we'll remove the snapper pin here, and then, to make it easier, we'll want to have one of our buddies pick up on the end of the bike rack. That way, that pin easily slides out. From there, we can pull out on the quick release spring pin, and then it allows us to tilt it down. Then you can open up your rear hatch to remove any gear you might have with you on your trip. Now, right here, as you can see, our handlebar would make contact if we we're to go any further. Depending on your vehicle or the bikes you may be carrying, you may be able to get a little more or a little less out of your rear hatch clearance.I've gone ahead and removed two bikes so I can show you the next best feature.

If only two of you are going out for a ride, it easily converts down to a two bike rack. Simply loosen up the lever, pull the pin and clip, and it slides right out. It then gets replaced by a reflector. As you can see, it gives us more clearance here at the rear, and it's less weight to carry. Now, you also have the option to use a cargo basket. Once the pin holes are lined up, we'll put our snapper pin back in place, then we'll tighten up that lever back here to reduce our play and rattle.

With this set-up, we can carry two bikes plus 90 pounds of gear.I've gone ahead and replaced my two bike extension and removed the last two bikes. Let's finish out on the last bit of features. The frame hooks themselves are rubber coated so they won't harm or scratch our bike's top tube. They also are adjustable along the center mast for different size bikes. Once you've got your bike in place, they easily ratchet down.

All of our frame hooks are lockable, that way our bikes cannot be removed from our bike rack. Here at the bottom, the wheel cradles are adjustable along the platform. This is for bikes with different size wheel bases, like an adult size bike versus a kid's bike. Once you've got it set, you simply tighten up the knob. Now, the cradles themselves will hold a tire up to three inches wide. If you already have this bike rack and you'd like to hold a fat bike, you can pick up the fat bike adapter kit, with part number HRSPRWHR-F-HD. That will give you the fat bike cradles. The straps that keep our wheels in place are hook and loop. When the bike rack is not in use, the center masts fold down. I'd like to point out that the pins do not use clips to hold them in place. They actually feature a tab that, when lined up with the notch, pass through, and when they're turned, they cannot be removed. So that's a nice feature. With both center masts fold down, we can access our rear hatch without tilting it away. Again, to remove that cargo, gear, groceries, anything we might have with us.Now, you can stow the bike rack in this position while you're on the trails. If you'd like more clearance, you can fold it up against your vehicle. This would be ideal for when driving. What you'll do is you'll pull out on that quick release spring pin, fold it up until it snaps in place. This is also ideal for pulling in a tight parking spot or in your garage. The Trail Rider has a 7 inch rise. This is not only going to give us better ground clearance here at the rear, but it's going to give us a higher loading height for loading and unloading our bikes. This is going to be less strenuous on our backs. It's made out of a sturdy steel construction, giving us a weight capacity of 50 pounds per bike. That's for the two bike section and the four bike section. Hollywood Racks has the standard black powder coated finish, so it's going to be resistant to rust and corrosion. Now, we'll give you some clearance dimensions. This is going to give you an idea of how it's going to fit your vehicle. The distance from the face of the hitch to the closest part of the rack when folded up is about 5 inches. The distance from the face of the hitch to the farthest part of the rack when folded up is about 16-1/4 inches. The distance from the face of the hitch to the closest part of the rack when folded down is about 7-1/2 inches. The distance from the face of the hitch to the farthest part of the rack is about 46 inches. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. It's important to note that you do need a 2 inch by 2 inch receiver in order to install this bike rack. On our 2 inch shank, we've got our oblong pin hole here, and then on the inside, we have our adjustable loop. Once we feed our shank into our receiver tube of our vehicle, the pin will then go through the oblong hole and the adjustable loop. From there, we then come back to our lever and start tightening that up. As we're tightening, it's going to draw that loop back up against the pin holes on our receiver tube, removing all the rattle and play from our bike rack.Let's go ahead and check it out. We'll feed our shank into the receiver tube, push it all the way in until the front of our hitch makes contact with this welded on tab. The full bike rack is pretty heavy, weighing about 81 pounds, so if you'd like to separate the two, making it a little bit lighter for you to load in your receiver tube, go ahead and do so. The two bike is only about 51 pounds. With everything all lined up, we can then take our included pin, slide that through on either side, and then put our lock on.The nice thing about the lock is, no one's going to be able to remove our bike rack from our hitch. Once it's in place, we'll then come back to our lever and start tightening it up. As I said, by doing this, it's going to reduce all that play and rattle from inside our receiver tube and our bike rack to make a nice, solid ride for our bikes. We'll just tighten that all the way up. One thing to note is, you do not want this up and down, because once it tilts down, it'll make contact, and you don't want it all the way at the bottom, because then it'll interfere with your ground clearance. So we'll tighten it up until it's on either the left or right side. With everything secure in our bike rack, let's load up our bikes. We'll need to lower it down to the platform position. I'll pull out on my quick release pin and lower it down until it snaps into place. Then we can raise up our center mast. Then we can undo our hook and loop wheel straps. Now, if you'd like to, per your instructions, you have the option to remove this Phillips head screw. This is going to allow you to completely remove the frame hooks. This may make it easier to load up your bike. Then we can load up our first bike. It's recommended that you load up the heaviest bike first. As you can see, since the frame hooks are not in the way, it makes it just a tiny bit easier to load up your bikes. Then we can just replace them once our bikes are in place. Then we can just run our hook and loop strap over our wheels. With all of our bikes loaded up, we can then run our included cable locks for more security. It includes a long cable and a short one. The long one is just for our two bike section, if we're only using that. The extension is for our four bike section. Let's start by connecting the two. We'll put one through one of the looped ends, and then we'll go back through itself. Just like that. We can then go through all of our bikes' wheels on each side.Once we've gotten to the shank of our bike rack, we can take the metal portion, go through the loop. We'll remove our lock, slip this in place, and then replace the lock. And then both the four bike section and the two bike section are locked together to our hitch pin lock. With everything loaded up and secure, let's go ahead and take it out on our test course and see how it performs. Here on our test course, let's first go into our slalom. This is going to show side to side action, such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our solid speed bumps. This is going to show an up and down action, such as pulling in and out of a driveway or out of a parking garage. And then finally on to our alternating speed bumps. This is going to show a twisting action, such as driving over potholes or uneven pavement. That's going to complete our look at the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4 Platform Style Four Bike Rack, part number HR1400Z.

Ordered it on Monday and it was here on Wednesday! I was able to put the 4 bike rake together by myself in about an hour. Easy to assemble and all the parts were included. Make well and is very sturdy. The back two bike section comes off every easily when not needed. The tilt down feature is easy to use and I was able to open the hatch door on my 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee 657156

You want sturdy? This is your rack. It is well built! Takes about 90 minutes for an ordinary woman to assemble. Plan on getting some time learning which knob or lever does what. Not hard, but don't be in too much of a hurry. It's on the back of a 2014 Subaru Outback in Texas. It clears the bumper fine and folds up nicely with the four bike extension on it. I do have to allow for more gentle driving to escape dragging on dips in driveways. Haven't taken my trip yet, but happy with the purchase and astounded by the helpful employee and faster-than-promised delivery. A totally wonderful experience. That almost never happens! 620168

This rack works perfect with our 2015 Dodge Durango. I am able to lower it down and fully open the rear hatch which was the main reason I chose this rack. It is heavy, but the system to tighten it down in the receiver eliminates any play or wobble. I can load 4 bikes in less than 5 minutes!! I fabricated a bracket to also hold my kids trail-a-bike. 655410

Great bike rack, significantly cheaper than other tray-style mounts. This rack does carry a kids 16" bike (must buy the adapter from e-trailer), which is one of the reasons why we went with the Hollywood Rack. For the adult bike, we used a foam noodle on the top post to prevent damage to the gear cables. There was some paint damage to the rack that I am assuming occurred during shipping that I'll need to touch up with a can of spray-paint, but other than that, I am pleased with the rack! 616089

Does everything I wanted in a new bike rack: folds, tilts, holds bikes upright and converts from 4 to 2 bikes. Also has locks incorporated into frame with additional locking heavy duty cable. 614994

Etrailer staff added a personal touch regarding when they received the order to when it was shipped to confirming that they were notified we received the item. I really liked that. My husband took it and unboxed it and started to assemble it. This went together in about 20 minutes but he is handy so it may take the non handy about 45 minutes. All things considered including my husbands “test” drive it was rock solid. There is a typical minor sway but you will have a little motion but it’s nothing to be worried about. This is a great bike travel rack 659366

Just installed the 2-bike half on my hitch for the first time. The rack came in a gazillion pieces and took about an hour to set up for the first time, but I'm very happy so far. I don't have much to say that wasn't covered in other reviews but I'll note I had no problem opening the hatch on my CRV with the rack tilted down and loaded with and adult size bike. 655906

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

Nice, solid bike rack. Props to e-trailer for the free shipping as this thing was heavy. The bike rack was fairly easy to assemble. the only issue I had was that one of the stop screws that prevent the wheel platforms from sliding off wouldn't go in all the way. Not sure if the hole wasn't drilled properly or if I cross-threaded the screw, but I could only screw it in halfway. It's secure (and no one will ever notice), it was just a minor frustration when putting the rack together. The bikes are extremely stable on the rack and the rack is extremely stable when properly attached to the vehicle. They aren't budging. It took a few tries to figure out the proper configuration for all 4 bike, but once I figured out that puzzle, loading and unloading is a snap. The 3rd bike is a bit tricky to get on. I'm happy with this purchase. It was more than i wanted to spend on a bike rack, but I'm glad I went with the higher quality. 145072

My husband gets frustrated very easily so imagine my surprise when this was installed with no complaints. It's very user friendly and I'm able to access the trunk without a problem. We have a Subaru outback. The bikes are secure and the rack easily adjusts to different size bikes. I love that you can adjust the rack to be smaller to carry 2 bikes. Everything about this rack is quality and easy to use. 216417

Hey Nicole, any issues with the rack clearance with a bike mounted touching the rear bumper? I have a 15 Outback. Thanks

Tony,We dont have any problems. There is a bit of space from the back bumper to the beginning of the rack. My initial thought was, why do they make the rack extend out so far? Then I realized it was necessary so you can fit between the car and rack. Once its tilted we have enough clearance to open the hatch. We have a 2011 outback

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

I have yet to use this rack, but I did want to offer some preliminary thoughts. First, etrailer shipped it quickly. The packaging was good with no damage to the rack despite some holes in the boxes. Etrailer also honored their price guarantee. The instructions (see link below or use http://www.etrailer.com/instructions.aspx?pn=HR1400 ) are not very good. The diagrams could have shown a better “exploded” view and detailed the parts better. The parts themselves are NOT labeled (well some have “L” or “S”, but you can see there are no parts S or L). Step 1.(3.) has you insert pin H6 and install clip R (a cotter pin) through the pin. Nope! Pins H6 and H5 are attached receiver tube H and neither uses a cotter pin - they both have attached clips. The cotter pin "R" is only used in Step 4. There stop screws (Figure 2c) but the instructions don’t tell you to use the included washers, washers also not detailed in the parts list. The multiple “L” pins have index guides that need to be aligned with the index holes on order to remove and insert them. So if you can’t get that “L” pin out, it needs to be rotated. There are other examples, but you get the idea. I ended up with and extra washer (a heavy washer) and a ring but I think everything is put together correctly. BE CAREFUL! If you get careless placing a bike between the vertical post and the car, and the bike slips, the bike’s handlebars could break the back glass on an SUV type vehicle. I learned this from experience, but fortunately I didn’t break the glass. The instruction say to position the bike’s frame so the hook rests on the lowest point of the top tube. This makes sense but forced me to rearrange the wheel holders because our bikes are so different and I wanted each bike set up in a certain slot. Other than that, everything feels solid and I look forward to using this for years to come. 297586

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

I debated between the HR1400 and Pro Series Q Slot and do not regret the HR1400. First, the package arrived one day early, but the shipping box was badly damaged. However, everything inside was packaged for the most part separately and nothing was damaged. So immediately put the rack together on my 1998 Dodge Pickup. The rack assembly was very quick and easy. I read a lot of reviews indicating the instructions are poor. They are not the best but honestly the rack was very easy to put together. Be sure to build the rack off of your hitch. Once built I was impressed!! Very sturdy and not a bad looking rack. I threw four mountain bikes right away onto the rack and they fit great. It did take me about 25 minutes to get the bikes on as you will find that you'll need to figure the best order for them to go on considering frame size etc.. I think if I were to do it again I would be able to do it in half the time. I took the bikes off the rack in about 5 minutes or less. I have not yet taking the bikes out as I just recieved the bike rack yesterday afternoon but was excited to build the rack and load the rack. But I can tell you that I see no problem with how it will travel down the road as this thing is solid! I did grab the rack while loaded with bikes and shook the hell out of it to see of the bikes would move. There was no wiggle or indication the rack or bikes were not secure. I choose the HR1400 because I need a rack that will fold up and also tilt. I also felt that the reviews were best on multiple websites not just etrailer. I also noticed that etrailer had by far the best customer service reviews which was important in case I had problems with the rack. You can not go wrong with the HR1400! You can not go wrong purchasing any equipement from etrailer.com as they did replied to a email very quickly amd sent out early. Believe me...this is an excellent bike rack. Safe riding! 499176

Like the product very much but you cannot open the hatch with the bikes on. I have a Toyota Sienna and you have to lower the vertical bar also in order to open the back hatch. There is a tilting option but with four bikes and the weight of the rack itself, it would take two people to tilt the rack down. But even at the tilted angle with bikes on, you cannot open the hatch. Otherwise, no complaints. 132756

Hi Bob,We have a Toyota Sienna 2014. Can you open the hatch without the bikes on the rack? If yes, how would you do that? Thanks.

A year into its use and as good as new. Super sturdy and the bikes really feel secure. I've used it with 1, 2, 3 and 4 bikes and adapting configs is pretty easy. Fit really nice on my Pilot (shown mounted but folded in the pic). Oh, great support too when I first assembled it. I called up with a quick question and spoke immediately to a live knowleadgeble person. 266198

The quality of the trailer hitch and assembly is excellent. Very happy with the quality and the purchase price. Given I was installing on a 2004 Honda Odyssey in 2015, I did have difficulty with the pre-drilled holes and threads on the frame of the vehicle. I made several attempted to clean the threads but was unsuccessful. I eventually took the hitch assembly to a local installer and they put it on for $[...]. The instructions provided for self installation were very clear and straight forward. I use my hitch assembly to haul bikes around to various triathlons. I purchased the bike carrier separately and it slides right into the hitch opening and locks on. 246026

This performs exactly as advertised. It's a little heavy when both halves (2 + 2 bike racks) are moved in one piece, but you can always take a little more time and separate them. It also indicates the quality of build - a typical tradeoff strength vs. weight. The bike hooks (top clamps) are sometimes tough for my wife to get moving upward to release the bikes, but that binding is related to how hard I cinch them down and there's really not any way to avoid that without a more complicated mechanism. Simple, strong and has enough adjustment so you can get four bikes meshed together like puzzle pieces. Once it's set up, at most 5 minutes loading and five minutes unloading four bikes. Not too often a product lives up to expectations. Really no complaints as to performance and durability. Worth the money. 351986

I’d like to see how it performs after the winter of indoor storage. Here in MN, it’ll probably be another month or more before I get to haul the bikes anywhere - but I expect it will perform as well as it did last season.

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

I just used this on my 2012 Honda Pilot for a road trip over 700 miles. I hauled my 29er along with my kids bikes (a 20" & a 24"). It works great for hauling different sizes of bikes together. It was rock solid and the bikes were absolutely stable and secure. It takes a few minutes to figure out the best configuration for your specific bikes when you first set it up but once you have a system its super quick and easy. This rack is heavy and solid and should last forever (except for maybe the velcro straps which do seem sufficient for now and would be easy to replace if needed). Even though it is heavy I am still able to carry it around and install/remove it by myself (5'4-130 lb woman). I love that the locks were included making this a great value. I also love that its two separate parts so I can use it as a 2 bike carrier or a 4 bike carrier when needed. Many times I am only hauling one bike and dont need a ginormous 4 bike carrier. Etrailers shipping was super fast!! The only thing I can criticize is the terrible instructions but if you look at the pictures on the box you can figure it out fairly quickly, it really wasnt difficult. Overall, I am very, very happy with this bike rack! 163356

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

I have been looking for a platform bike rack that can hold 4 bikes, and I found etrailer the best place to search. Beside the wide selection, they have great videos, pictures, and Q/A sessions where a lot of information can be found. I chose the Hollywood HR1400 over the Swagman XTC-4 mainly due to its capability to tilt away from the car, and that the XTC would not properly close to the upright position on my 2013 Odyssey. The service from etrailer was excellent. I placed the order on Wednesday, and that very afternoon Bridget called me to tell me that the order was received, but a small problem is that they did not have the product on stock. Since I was going down to Florida for vacation, it was important to get the product within a certain timeframe (wanted to ship the product to FL instead of Canada, where I live). When I told Bridget my dilemma, she was very helpful, and ended up shipping the unit from a different warehouse in MO, and it only cost me $14 in shipping instead of free shipping. But, I got the product the following Monday! Great service! I just got home last night, and hardly could wait to assemble the rack today. The assembly was easy, it took about 30-35 minutes. The instructions were helping, but the product is self explanatory too. I loaded the bikes, and took a short ride. The rack is solid, which is what I thought the first time I assembled it. The bikes were not rattling at all. It is easy to fold it up and down. It actually is close to the car in the upright position, but it clears the bumper and the tailgate as you can see it on the pictures. I was a bit worried about ground clearance, since the Odyssey's hitch is kind of low, but there is no problem there either, as the rack has quite a bit of elevation from the main shank. Below some measurements for those who have the same car, and thinking of buying this rack (so far I did not find this information on the website): Ground clearance at main shank: 9" Ground clearance at the end of 4 bike unit: 18" Distance between bumber and closest part of rack when upright: 2" Distance between tailgate and closest part of rack when upright: 3" Distance between bumber and closest part of rack when folded down: 8" All in all, I highly recommend etrailer for your towing needs, they are a reputable and reliable company, I just wish we would have more like them on the web. I will definitely come back if I am in need of similar products, and will recommend to my friends. Great job Etrailer Team! 192302

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

This is a very sturdy product. It is well built, but as a result is quite heavy. Having the rack split into its two component pieces makes it more manageable, but lifting it with two people would be best way I could recommend safely transporting this rack. The rack has lived up to all of my expectations. Once calibrated for the bikes being placed on it, it can be loaded and unloaded in a matter of a five minutes (no zip ties required) and that even includes securing bikes to the rack with the included lock! The tire loops are easily adjustable though too, so it has never taken me more than 20 minutes to load (4 bikes.) Putting this on the hitch itself is just as easy, and the ability to tighten the rack with a lever reduces vibration and movement of the bikes in transit. Upon seeing this for the first time, my father-in-law bought the same rack at his local bike shop. 489855

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

This rack is very solid and even with 4 bikes I did not worry at all that they would come off during a 3-4 hour trip. After getting the individual racks set up for each bike, it was easy to load and unload. Adjusting the wheel holders in and out can be a bit of a challenge as they don't slide easily. I also wish there was a better way to change the way the rack sits on the car when empty. To adjust it to be flatter to the car and to lean it back to get in the back of van there are too my pins that need to be repositioned. It's easier just to take the whole thing off and leave it in garage. I use just the rack for 2 bikes a lot and it's pretty easy to get on and off the hitch even for me a 50 something women who is not terribly strong. 407420

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

I really wanted to like this bike rack, but it presented too many issues to give it more than a 3 star review. The rack was packaged well enough(although one of the upright posts was scratched up somehow) and I thought the instructions were pretty darn easy to follow...not sure about some of these reviews listing assembly issues, there's really not that much to the assembly: slide some parts together, secure with nuts and bolts, and everything else slides on with clamps and cotter pins. It is HEAVY. When fully assembled for 4 bikes, this thing is not easy to move around. That being said, I guess heavy means strong. The first issue I ran into was with the 2 bike adapter. I could not get rid of the wobble between the main carrier and the 2 bike adapter. It says not to crank too hard, and I didn't want to strip it. But I cranked it pretty good and still there was play. Wobble between car and main carrier was fine...nice and tight. Getting the bikes on was a major headache. First, it is a very tight fit between bikes. Pedals hitting each other, hitting the upright posts, pedals getting caught in other bikes spokes, trying to fit bikes under raised clamps, etc. Biggest problem I encountered was with my kids bikes. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I did not see any "minimum requirements" for bike/wheel size, only maximum. I have 2 kids bikes with 20" wheels, and they simply did not fit correctly. Not only did the clamps not come down far enough to secure the bikes, but the detailers on both bikes were coming into contact with the wheel holders. I ended up using mini bungee cords to secure up the detailers and I clamped down onto the bike seats instead of the horizontal post. I reached out to eTrailer seeing what they had to say, and they recommended purchasing several additional parts in order to rectify the issues...$90 worth of parts! No thanks. Unfortunately, I will have to make do...returning is not feasable with a 20% restocking fee. One more note...tilting the rack up against the back of your vehicle is nearly impossible with 1 person. The pin is up close to the vehicle, and you can't reach it from the back of the rack where you'd lift from. Kudos to eTrailer service(Bryan) for trying to assist. Very prompt and communicative. 500478

Don, thank you for your review. If your kids bike wheels are not fitting in the wheel holders, I would suggest getting the Hollywood wheel hoop adapter part # HRSW-ADP-2
Kids Bike Wheel Hoop Adapters for Hollywood Racks Sport Rider Bike Rack - Qty 2
$35.05
. With bikes with alternative frames especially childrens bikes, the ratcheting arms do not have a top cross tube to go over. You will need an adapter bar such as part # HRBA-PRO
Hollywood Racks Bike Frame Adapter Bar for Women's and Alternative Frame Bikes
$31.46
to attach to the frame and give the ratcheting arm on the bike rack a contact point. This Hollywood rack part # HR1400 is 74 pounds as a 4 bike carrier. The lightest 4 bike platform rack we carry is the Saris freedom part # SA4414B
Saris Freedom 4 Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount - Tilting
$579.99
. The freedom is 53 pounds.

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

I was looking for a 4 bike hitch mounted rack of this style. My main goal was to have it fit my 05 Jeep Wrangler with 31 x 10.5 tires. I wanted to make sure the rack would rest in the folded up positon when not in use. I also wanted the flexibility to have only a 2 bike mount for when I ride solo. I emailed etrailer and they were quick with a response and included a video as well. I placed the order a week ago Saturday, and my rack was delivered ahead of schedule. I was blown away by the service I received from etrailer, and am very pleased with the rack. I found it easy to install and it totally does what I need it to do. Thank you etrailer. Keep up the great job. 104595

I love it. It is a breeze to put it on and take it off. When it is on, I feel secure knowing that everything is locked to my vehicle. The rack itself when not in use tilts up and fits perfectly against the spare tire on my Jeep.

thank you for the follow up. The bike hitch was delivered ahead of expectations and in good order. Given its weight the outside packaging (pictures attached) was damaged on the corners but the actual internal contents was well packaged enough that no damage to the product occurred. Have installed and used it on MTB trip already and it works great...love the optionality to have either a 4 bike to 2 bike setup. 352014

Comments

I have used the bike hitch a lot in both the 2 x bike and 4 x bike configuration. Both adult and kids bike sizes. Once you get the spacing setup loading and unloading is easy. Travels behind the vehicle really well and does not sway given the way it integrates with the locking pin system. Very happy with it.

I've only just received my HR1400 Hollywood rack, assembled it, installed in on my car, and loaded it with 4 of our bikes, but I'm very impressed so far. It's exactly what I was hoping for. It is heavy, but it's extremely sturdy. I found it very easy to mount on my car and remove when I do so taking advantage of the fact it breaks into 2 pieces (which it does very easily). I'm looking forward to using it on our next outing. By the way, etrailer.com rocks! You had the best price on this rack and it was sitting on my doorstep 2 days after ordering (ordered Wed afternoon and delivered Friday). In addition, I had no issues with the packaging or the contents being damaged as a few others have mentioned in reviews. 122412

Ive owned this rack for a year now and I still love it. I would definitely buy it again if I ever had the need. Clearances are fine on my vehicle. I have no issue with the Velcro-like straps. The only issue I have is that I cant open the back of my car when bikes are loaded. But honestly, I dont find that to be a huge deal.

Just received my Hollywood Rack last week and put it together and used it this weekend. The rack seems solid, easy to load bikes and the rack seems to secure the bikes well to the rack. I have not driven far with 4 bikes yet but with 2 bikes I've had no issues at all. Looking forward to years of service with the rack. The rack arrived on time and in good shape from etrailer.com, no problems at all. 237240

I called etrailer on a Tuesday and asked if I could get the rack by Thursday. I did! Etrailer service rocks! This was the third time I have ordered from etrailer. We just finished a 700 mile round trip weekend with the bike rack. We had 2 bikes for part of the trip and 4 bikes for the rest of the trip. I was very happy with the performance of the rack. Easy to install and very solid. It held the bikes very securely. I did not place the large hook over the lowest part of the top tube, as directed, because it caused the mountain bike tires to extend several inches beyond the side of the vehicle. (The picture from the rear is deceiving because of perspective. The tires were only about an inch outside vehicle profile as loaded.) The hooks held just fine as shown in photo. I used it on a 2013 Wrangler Sahara 2 door with factory P255/70R 18" tires. The bikes went onto the rack easily without a receiver extension. We could not, however tilt the rack to open tailgate or fold rack and lock into upright position. It lacked about 1" of clearing spare tire in both cases. Small issue, in my opinion. I'll probably just go to a machine shop and have a 1" extension fabricated. 100985

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

Pure awesomeness! But I’ll remind you now, lest you forget in your enthusiasm: the pin’s not stuck, you secured it down with that crank as one of the first steps. No hammer needed. Just sayin). I can’t wait for the next trip. No more fighting forever to get the handlebars untangled while I try to fit all the bikes on. Which I contend is IMPOSSIBLE on those stupid hanging rack types. No more wheels flopping in the breeze potentially scratching my car. No more removing the wheels because the bike shop sold me a carrier that was too low for my minivan. No more bikes bouncing up and down while I drive. No more scraping the exit curbs. AND I still have a decent view out of the back up camera/screen!! I was able to open the hatch with the bikes tilted. You have to hold the bike closest back a little. I let it do it by itself and the auto open forced it way through instead of stopping and it did scratch the car. But closing it, I stayed at the handle bars and gently pushed and it cleared fine. And it locks to the car. No more fear my rack will get stolen. And comes with another lock for the bikes. Sure a bottle opener would be a cool feature. I’ll rubberbad one on. It’s SO worth the money! Stop comparing and put it in the cart. By the way, the pics only show it set up with two racks. I love that I can customize it to the number of us going out for the day. 503456

Great communication from seller. Fast shipping, particularly since it's free. Item arrived and was in good shape. Heavy and awkward to carry so be careful how far you have to lift it. Don't ask your wife to pick it up. Not very difficult to put together, although slowed down by cumbersome instructions with poor pictures and it took time to identify each part as the correct one. Good quality unit, although some packing styrofoam was glued to bars leaving several stretches of white, sticky goo on the upwards facing bars where the tire holders slide. Makes adjusting the tire holders more difficult. Overall a good product and handles the 4 bikes well. Will see over time how it holds up to consistent use. 105153

Love this bike rack. My son helped to put it together and that was the only help I needed. I can put it on my odyssey by myself and also take it off by myself. A sales person at a local bike shop told me not to get it unless I was planning on leaving it on all the time because it would be too heavy. Needless to say he was wrong. My husband and I have used it twice and plan on taking more trips along with our bikes. Everything arrived when expected and no problems. I would recommend this rack to anyone wanting a sturdy bike rack. It is also nice that if we don't have more than two bikes we can take part of it off and have a 2 bike rack. 556866

I just assembled and briefly tested this rack and I am very pleased. There are a couple of quirks in the instructions but assembly is pretty straightforward. It is so nice to have a rack that accommodates "low crossbar" (ladies) bikes w/o those silly adapters AND has a lot of vertical clearance to accommodate speed bumps and dips in the road. And modular (2 + 2 ) to boot. HUGE KUDOS to etrailer for their immense resources: product info, pictures, videos, comparisons, etc. FANTASTIC! 563712

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

Lets be honest, there are better looking racks. But I work at etrailer.com and can use pretty much any bike rack in the world. When it came time to go on an adventure race I chose this rack to get my teams bikes there. When we got home one of my team mates bought one because he was so impressed. When it came time to go on a 12 hour road trip with my family I chose the Hollywood. It is a star. Not a Marilyn Monroe, more of a Sylvester Stallone. The thing is solid and it works really well. It is heavy, but any 4 bike rack is going to be on the heavy side. The option to remove the 2 bike extension is nice because it makes the rack easier to handle when you only need 2 bikes. The antirattle knob snugs the rack up in the hitch super tight. Having the cable lock and hitch lock included and keyed the same makes it easy to lock the bikes up when you stop for dinner. The folding feature uses pins and clips instead of the switches found on some other racks. The pins and holes were a bit tough to get aligned at first. I had to ask my wife to lift up on the end of the rack just a hair to get the pin started. She got chain grease on her and I quickly learned that asking for her help was not a good solution to my pin alignment problem. So I grabbed my drill and a bit that was sized the same as the pin hole and cleaned out the holes. About one minute later the pin was sliding in and out perfectly and my wife will never get greasy again. In a nutshell this rack is not the lightest, not the easiest and not the prettiest, but I love it. It is easy enough to use that it is not a hassle, it locks to keep the bikes safe, is a great price for the features and it is solid, very solid. You can see in the pictures that I have used this rack extensively and it still is working great. 102588

Hi, my question is whether you have any frame damage on your biks after your long trips. Vs. going with the t2 or hold up style.

Nate, I have used the rack on a few long trips, to Colorado, Wisconsin and to our adventure race. So far there has not been any frame damage. The hook that comes down on the frame has a pretty thick pad. One of the wheel clamp racks would prevent the possibility of frame damage, but I think it will be a long time before the pad on the Hollywood wears out and it is an issue.

I went to a lot of bike stores and searched on line sites before deciding on the HR1400. This bike rack is by far the most versatile carrier that I have seen for the investment. I received the carrier within three days. I configure it to carry just three bikes. It is heavy duty; the welds, bolts and hardware are made to last. It's easy to assemble for two or four bikes. The hitch securing and locking system really make for a sturdy assembly. The only drawback is, it's heavy duty. It take some muscle to put it on and pull it off the hitch. But it does fold up nicely. I don't think anyone would be disappointed with this purchase. I'm thinking of purchasing the additional cargo carrier. 413271

Review from a similar Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE in Hitch Bike Racks

First - buying from etrailer was so convenient because of the comprehensive website. I watched the installation videos for several bike racks before settling on this one. I even was able to see pictures of how it fit onto a Ford Explorer similar to one I planned to use it with, and verified that the rear door could in fact open with the rack installed (it tips out of the way). When the rack arrived, there were no surprises - it worked just as expected. The rack itself was easy to setup and use. It takes about 30 seconds to mount a bike, once it has been setup, then maybe another 30 seconds to secure the wheel straps (I don't use these for short trips). My first trip with the rack was about 150 miles and the bikes stayed very secure without noise or shifting. It is a very sturdy and rigid rack. I like being able to set it up for 2 or 4 bikes - both configurations work well. I also like how it supports the bikes from the wheels rather than hanging from the frame. One tip - for women's or kids bikes where the frame tube dips or is too low to be clamped, I simply clamp down on the seats. The only negative comment I can offer is that the rack is heavy. All considered, it works well for my needs and has good value. Hitch and bike locks were included and very handy. 558751

I've only assembled part of the rack for 2 bikes, but it was a breeze to put it together. Rack looks very solid, easy to put on and take off bikes. Installing and taking off the rack on my CX-9 is quite easy as well. I can also just lower the frame holder to be able to open the trunk - no need to fold the pole down. The only thing is I have one adult bike and one youth so I had to deviate a bit from official order of putting frame holder and wheel support so both bikes are centered and it's easy to put them on. I rode with bikes on several times and they are look very secure on the road. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase. 553118

Customer Service at E-trailer is great! Rebecca was able to answer all of my questions. While a little on the heavy side (I can not lift it when in the 4 bike arrangement) the rack seems to be all that it promised to be. I like the anti rattle feature and the "pin" set up which makes the rack a no tools necessary rack. The perfect rack would have had locks in the bike "clamp downs" and be a bit lighter. Assembly did not take long. My husband completed it in under 30 mins. Putting it in the hitch was the hook up for ease of assembly. 528297

  • Most bike racks, the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z included, are not built to withstand the stresses associated with being at the back of any type of trailer or RV. But there are some that you can use. For a 4-bike rack that you can use at the back of your trailer you can use the BikeWing # B01458 which holds the bikes at the wheels. If you prefer a rack that holds the bikes at the frame the Yakima LongHaul # Y02476 is a great option. I have included links to videos for both...

  • Recommended 2-Inch Class III Hitch for 2017 Honda CR-V
  • We offer 2-inch Class III aftermarket trailer hitches that will be much better for using a hitch-mount bike rack on your 2017 Honda CR-V than the light-duty Class I hitch currently installed. Class III hitches have higher weight ratings and in general will offer better compatibility with the range of hitch-mount accessory items available today. Of the two options we can offer, Curt # C13397 and Draw-Tite # 76128, I suggest the Draw-Tite since it has both a lower price and a higher weight...

  • Availability of 2-Bike Version of the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z with Add-On Option
  • We do have a 2-bike version of the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Rack # HR1400Z that will allow you to add 2 more bikes. This bike rack is the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 2-Bike Platform Rack # HR1450Z. The add-on extension is part # HR1475Z for whenever you are needing to add those extra bikes, and you can even add a cargo basket # HR1485 if you need extra room in your vehicle. The SE2 is the same bike rack as the SE, just as a 2-bike version with the option to...

  • Can the Swagman XTC4 be Tilted with Bikes Loaded for Rear Hatch Clearance
  • We do have 4-Bike bike racks that have the tilting feature that allows you to keep your bikes loaded but unfortunately you have to remove the bikes off of the Swagman XTC4 # S64665 in order to rotate the center mast down to gain rear hatch clearance. For a similar bike rack that uses arms to secure the bikes and comes with bike and rack locks I recommend the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z which does allow you to keep your bikes loaded while you use the tilt feature. • Will Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4 Bike Platform Rack Fit on 2015 Honda Odyssey
  • The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE, part # HR1400Z, fits on your 2015 Honda Odyssey once you install the 2 inch trailer hitch. With that being said it may not be the best choice because when we tested it there wasn't room to open rear hatch because of the bike's handle bars. Even with the rack tilted. If you're not worried about this then the Sport Rider SE is a great choice for you. If that is important to you then I recommend the Saris Freedom, part # SA4414B. I've linked a video...

This product features a sturdy steel square tubing design and has a maximum tongue weight rating of 200 lbs. It will fit both the coupe and sedan models with no drilling required. You may also want to consider the stabilizer strap part # 18050 to ensure a smooth ride. Although the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider part # HR1400Z is a great bike rack, a Class...

  • 4 BIke Platform Rack that Clears the Spare Tire on a 2013 Jeep Wrangler
  • If you haven't picked up a hitch for your vehicle yet, I recommend the DrawTite Class III hitch, part # 76104 as this has the widest range of compatibility with the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited bumpers. This will require that you either have the Mopar offroad bumper or all modifications and excess welding removed to install this receiver. I've included a video of our install team showing this on a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. For standard tires on a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, bike racks...

  • Hitch and 4-Bike Rack for 2018 Honda CR-V
  • For your CR-V I recommend the higher-capacity 2-inch Class III hitch option since a loaded 4-bike rack can be pretty heavy. Draw-Tite hitch # 76128 has a hefty 675-lb tongue weight rating, which is downward force on the hitch, and that is the capacity that matters for using a bike rack. This hitch bolts on using included hardware; no drilling is needed. Plan on about an hour for the install. Please refer to the linked instructions for a list of the tools you'll need and to the included...

  • How to Select Correct Replacement Wheel Hoops
  • It may be possible to replace the wheel cradles of your TransIT Flatbed 4DLX though we do not carry that brand so you will need to know how the cradles go on the rack and I wasn't able to tell from my research exactly how the cradle went on this rack. If they slide on and are square you may be able to use the 1-1/4" Replacement Wheel Loop - SportRack # 05004700000 (Right Side) or # 05004800000 (Left Side), or if they are 1-3/16" there are the Replacement Wheel Hoops # P318. • Can the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z 4-Bike Bike Rack be Used on a Motorhome
  • As long as the 2" hitch receiver on your 2001 Fleetwood Discovery Motorhome is rated for the 74 lbs of the 4-bike rack version plus the additional 180 lbs of bikes (45 lbs per bike) then you are good to go. The only other thing to be sure of is that you have less than 12" of clearance from the center of your hitch pin hole to the rearmost part of your motorhome to ensure clearance. I spoke with my contact at Hollywood Racks who confirmed that the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for Use with Bike Rack on a 2014 Chevrolet Impala LTZ
  • The best trailer hitch we have for your 2014 Chevrolet Impala LTZ is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36538 which is a custom fit and will not require any drilling. The Draw-Tite option is a Class II hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. I like the Draw-Tite hitches as they do not require the use of an added support strap like the Curt hitches will. You can see how it installs using the attached video on a similar 2015 Chevrolet Impala. Please note that you will be limited...

  • The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # HR1400Z has a distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the wheel hoop of 7-1/2 inches. As long as you have that distance when measuring from your hitch pin hole past your spare tire, this rack will work well whether being used as a 2 bike or 4 bike rack. If you have long handlebars you will simply need to position them around the spare tire.

  • Recommending Four-Bike Platform Rack Among Hollywood, Swagman and Malone
  • The most bang for your buck is going to be the Hollywood Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z, which, like the Swagman Quad # S64692 and Malone Pilot # MPG2112-2115 is a tilt-away, fold-up rack that uses ratcheting hooks and wheel holders to keep the bikes steady. The Hollywood does this for less but still provides an anti-rattle device, a hitch lock so the rack is secured to your vehicle, and a cable lock to secure your bikes to the rack. So do the Swagman and Malone, though they are pricier....

  • Does the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider Bike Rack Allow Rear Hatch to Open on 2017 Subaru Outback
  • The tilting ability on the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4-Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount Item # HR1400Z could allow you to fully open the rear hatch on your 2017 Subaru Outback. A lot depends on the width of the nearest bike. Another factor is the length of the rack. The longer the rack the sooner it will make contact with the ground so it is possible that the rack will not even tilt all the way down. The other issue is the weight of the loaded rack. It will not be easy...

  • Will the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Fit Factory Hitch on a 2016 Toyota Highlander
  • I do believe that the factory trailer hitch on the 2016 Toyota Highlander is a 2 inch and it would be compatible with the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider # HR1400Z. You can measure the opening of your hitch receiver to be sure; either across or top to bottom the opening should be 2 inches.

  • Is Hollywood Racks Sport Rider a Good Fit for 2013 Subaru Forester & Will Hatch Open w/Rack Tilted
  • We have had a lot of positive feedback on the Hollywood Racks bike racks, including # HR1400Z, in general, not necessarily from owners of a 2013 Subaru Forester though. But even friends of etrailer marvel at how sturdy and well-made these racks are for the price. With this or any tilting bike rack it is unlikely that you would be able to open the rear hatch. For that I recommend a different bike rack such as the Saris Glide # SA774. This bike rack tilts out instead of down with or without...

  • Malone Pilot 4 Bike Rack Compatibility with 16 Inch Wheels
  • The Malone Pilot 4 Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches - Frame or Wheel Mount # MPG2112-2115 is not a direct fit for a small 16 inch bike. I think the wheel trays may work based on the attached photo of a 20 inch bike, but it appears the hook will be too long to secure that small bike. It may work if you were to use a bike adapter bar like # Y02531 which is 14-1/2 inches at its shortest. This may make it compatible but hasn't been tested with that small a bike. This will work well with...

Like you have already said, the racks can handle 2 or 4 bikes with the last 2 bike section being removable. The SE4 weighs a little less (shipping weight is 82 pounds) when compared to the 2+2 (89 pound shipping weight). For wheel cradles I give the edge to the 2+2. The actual cradles are more secure than the hoops used on the SE4. Both racks have the same 45 pounds per bike capacity so...

  • The Curt Class III trailer hitch # C13119 does have a 350-lb tongue weight (TW) rating as you noted, and that capacity must be enough for the weight of the bike rack itself plus that of your loaded bikes. A substantial 4-bike rack like the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z weighs about 80-lbs all by itself. Add the bikes and you are indeed talking about a hefty load on the hitch.
