Weigh Safe hitch ball application

This Weigh Safe hitch ball has an easy-to-use, built-in scale that measures your trailer's tongue weight every time you tow. If the scale indicates that your tongue weight is too low or too high, you can adjust it before you head out so that you can complete your journey with peace of mind, knowing that your setup is safe.

A clamp-on adapter (WSUN-4 - sold separately) can be purchased separately to increase the diameter of this hitch ball to 2-5/16". The adapter allows you to easily switch hitch ball diameters so that you can tow trailers with different coupler sizes. If you know that you will be needing this function, we recommend that you purchase WSUN-1, which is this same hitch ball with the adapter already included.

What is Tongue Weight?

Tongue weight (TW) refers to the weight that the fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 percent - and should not exceed 15 percent - of your gross trailer weight. For example, a 10,000-lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. You can adjust the tongue weight of your trailer by removing or adding cargo, or redistributing the load on the trailer. The tongue weight should not exceed the capacity of your tow vehicle, your hitch, or any of your towing components.

Why is Tongue Weight So Important?

Weigh Safe helps ensure proper trailer tongue weight

Simply put, too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway and too much tongue weight can cause the tow vehicle to perform poorly. You may have difficulty steering, gaining traction, or braking when driving a setup that has too much weight pushing down on the rear of the vehicle. Ultimately, towing with an improper tongue weight can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or cause your trailer to separate from the vehicle.

Built-In Tongue Weight Scale

Weigh Safe built-in tongue weight scale

The Weigh Safe hitch ball's built-in scale signals you to adjust your load before you hit the road, resulting in a much safer and enjoyable towing experience. Before this hitch ball, gauging your trailer's tongue weight was a hassle. You had to rely on inefficient bathroom scales, make a trip to the weigh station, or purchase a separate tongue weight scale. But with the Weigh Safe ball's built-in scale, measuring your tongue weight is as easy as coupling your trailer to your ball mount. Simply attach the hitch ball to your ball mount and hook up your trailer. The weight of your trailer will push down on the hitch ball, which in turn pushes down on an internal hydraulic piston that sits on a bed of oil. When the piston drops into the oil, the pressure reading is sent out to the scale.

Simple Installation

Installation of Weigh Safe hitch ball

Installing the Weigh Safe hitch ball is simple. Insert the shank of the hitch ball through the hole in your ball mount and thread on the included lock washer. Next attach the female fastening nut, which includes the scale, to the hitch ball shank. Then tighten down the female fastening nut.

Superior Stainless Steel Construction

This Weigh Safe hitch ball is constructed of solid stainless steel offering far greater protection against rust and corrosion than standard steel hitch balls that are only painted or plated on the surface. The stainless steel shank is heat treated to increase its overall toughness, shear strength, and tensile strength so that you can safely tow up to 10,000 lbs.

The Weigh Safe hitch ball meets VESC V-5 regulations and is SAE J684 certified. These regulatory bodies - the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission and the Society for Automotive Engineers - create standards for the design, construction, and performance of automotive and towing accessories. Weigh Safe has had this hitch ball thoroughly tested in simulation to ensure that it complies with these standards. The result is a strong, safe, sturdy product that is built to last.

Video Transcript for Weigh Safe Hitch Ball WSUN-2 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Weigh Safe 2" Hitch Ball with a built in tongue weight scale. This hitch ball provides a connection point for your trailer's coupler. The tongue weight scale is built into the hitch ball. That's going to help you balance your trailer. What that does is it promotes safe towing, so that's going to let you know if your load needs to be adjusted before you tow. It offers simple operation. It's going to automatically provide a measurement every time you couple your trailer, and it's efficient and hassle free.

Meaning that it eliminates the need for a separate or commercial scale. The unit's constructed of a stainless steel construction. It's going to be highly resistant to rust and corrosion. The shank on the unit is heat treated for superior strength and dependability. When it comes to certification, that's SAE J684 certified. It also meets VESC regulations and it's V-5 compliant.

The product's made in the U.S.A. It's going to come with a two inch diameter hitch ball. It's going to offer a weight capacity of 10,000 pounds. The tongue weight scale has a capacity of 1,500 pounds and that's the number right before it gets into the red, so if you find yourself in the red, that means that your load probably needs to be adjusted to be down here in the non-red portion of the scale. The shank diameter on the unit is one inch. It's designed to fit a ball mount platform that's three-quarters of an inch thick. When it comes to the dimensions of the scale, going side-to-side this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of two inches.

Back to front is going to give us a measurement of three inches. The scale portion going this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of two and one quarter inches. Now, once this unit's installed the scale's going to sit below the ball mount platform. When you're ready to use it, you'll attach your hitch ball to your ball mount according to the included instructions. It does have wrench flats on here to make installation much easier. Then, you'll use the included hex wrench and tighten the ball set screw until the gauge reads 100 pounds. Then, you're ready to hook up your trailer.

The weight of your trailer will push down on the high ball, which in turn pushes down on an internal hydraulic piston that sits on a bed of oil. When the piston drops into the oil, the pressure reading is then sent out to the scale for you to easily read. That's going to do it for today's look at the Weigh Safe 2" Hitch Ball with the built in tongue weight scale.

So far, OK, but I haven't towed with this yet. The machined quality of the parts is 5 star. But... The bottom gauge replaces the nut. In many ball mounts, mine included, you cannot rotate this ball to tighten because there are raised I-beam like ridges on the top of the ball mount, and the flats of on the base of the ball fall between the raised portions on the ball mount. Instead, you have to turn the bottom gauge to tighten the ball to the requisite tightness. The problem is that this can (and probably will) leave the gauge facing in a direction where it will be unreadable. Then you are stuck with a choice of leaving the gauge looser or facing the wrong way. Weigh Safe should have provide a few washer shims of different thickness so that you don't have to trade off viewability of the gauge with the needed tightness on the ball. 403162

The hitch is of great quality. I got it from etrailer quickly. It took several times of properly adjusting the scale during set up before I felt I was getting a correct reading. I am only towing 3000# so maybe it isn’t as sensitive with lighter tongue weights. 493455
