Features to know about

Why Use a Soft Start for Your RV?

A soft start device reduces the initial inrush current when an AC compressor kicks on. Instead of that harsh power spike that can trip breakers or overload generators, the soft start gradually ramps up the compressor's motor, making it easier to start an AC unit on limited power sources (like small generators, shore power, or inverters).

Power Up in Seconds

Not only will this device reduce your startup power demand by up to 70 percent, it's going to make your AC startup quieter, and reduce wear on the compressor. Plus, you get to skip the complicated install and fumbling with hardwiring a unit in. Just plug SoftStartUp between your RV and the power source, and you're ready to run your air conditioner in less than a minute.

Active Start photo showing the size.

Camp Your Way, Anywhere

You don't need to plan your trips around full hookups or high-power campsites anymore. This soft start device works with 30-amp and 50-amp service, paralleled generators, and even lets you run your AC from a 2,200-watt generator or a standard house outlet. It's weatherproof and made for life on the road, so you can beat the heat wherever you park.

Stay Cool, Run More Appliances

No one wants to choose between using the air conditioner and making breakfast, drying hair, or watching TV. If your AC startup dims the lights or interrupts your Wi-Fi, this device fixes that so you can keep your favorite comforts running together without tripping breakers when the AC kicks on.

Confident Dual AC Operation (With Key Limits)

When summer heat hits hard, two air conditioners make all the difference. SoftStartUp gives your 50-amp RV the power to run two 15K or 13.5K BTU AC units at the same time on a 50-amp shore power hookup or 3,000-watt generator, as long as your setup matches the compatibility chart below. That means fewer hot nights and less worry about overloading the system.

Compatibility of SoftStartUp with RV.

Power Source Type Number of AC Units That Can Start and Run
50-Amp or 30-Amp Power 2
3,000-Watt Generator 2
3,000-Watt Inverter 2
2,200-Watt Generator 1
2,000-Watt Inverter 1

I can’t give this a star rating because I had to return it. It is a great idea and I watched the video and was excited to use it. By the time the product arrived I had researched it to the point where I understood this is NOT COMPATIBLE with an automatic transfer switch. So it had to be returned.

by:

It will not run 2 AC’s on 30 amp service. I called the factory and they don’t tell you that EVERYTHING has to be turned off for it to work. If I’m going camping I’m not tuning everything off. I will just stay home or be prepared to run just one AC. Softstartup needs to tell people this so everyone will know. I was very disappointed because we do go to some state parks that only have 30 amp. We have a fifth wheel and if it’s 90 plus you have to run both AC’s. etrailer was great though on getting me a return to get it sent back. The description needs to be updated on this product so it’s not so misleading.

I really like it it will serve us well boondoxking this yesr. The only thing I didn't expect is that its big I mean big lol there is no hiding thst thing from would be robbers but I love it anyway.

by:

works well, save me climbing up to mess wiiththe AC units.

by:

Awesome unit, only complaint would be is that the complimentary 30amp adapter only covers one side of the unit. A second adapter needs to be purchased separately.

by:

This is the greatest thing! I no longer have to blow breakers and have issues running my RV plus you just plug it in with no wiring at all! Winner winner!

by:

Device seems to work as advertised and Sarah was very helpful getting the order to me in time for our trip.

by:

It's the bee's knees! Worked as advert ised.

  • Can SoftStartUp Plug-In Soft Start Work with Two RV AC Units
Hey Andy, yes the SoftStartUp Plug-In Soft Start for RV # SSR64FR can be used in place of the soft start you mentioned. You'd only need one and it would cover both AC units. It can also be used with your Power WatchDog surge protector as well. The Soft Start would go between the AC and the WatchDog.

  • Will SSR64FR Work On A 30 Amp Outlet?
Hey Joseph, This soft start, # SSR64FR, is great for running an AC unit on either a 30 amp or 50 amp hookup. So you are going to be able to do just what you are wanting. This soft start is going to reduce the startup current by 50% which is why it is great especially for running both 13,500-15,000 AC units. What trailer or RV do you have these AC units on?

  • Soft Start Kit to Use on RV with 3 AC Units
Hey Joe, thanks for reaching out! The SoftStartUp Plug-In Soft Start for RVs # SSR64FR will work for 2 AC units, so if you only plan on booting up 2 of them then you'll be fine. If you're wanting to use all 3 ACs then I recommend installing the Soft Start for Single Zone Air Conditioner Setup # SSR54FR as well as the Kit # SSR44FR so you have a Soft Start for each AC unit. Since these are a permanent installation you won't have to remember to plug them up prior to starting up your AC kits.

  • Will the SoftStartUp Work With Dual ACs, Surge Protectors, and Generator Power
Hello, Garland. Using both a built-in surge protector and a portable surge protector will not damage anything, but it can be redundant. If one protector disconnects due to a power issue, the other may also shut down because it senses the sudden loss of power. This is normal behavior and not a fault with the SoftStart. The SoftStartUp Plug-In SoftStart part # SSR64FR is compatible with dual AC setups like yours and is designed to reduce the startup surge of the air conditioners. This helps...

  • Can the 50 amp SoftstartUp Be Used w/ the 50 amp Hughes Autoformers Power Booster?
Yes, you can use the 50 amp SoftStartUp Plug-In Soft Start for RVs item # SSR64FR with the 50 amp Hughes Autoformers Voltage Booster with Surge Protection item # HU57FR. You'll want to put the SoftStartUp item # SSR64FR behind the Hughes Autoformers item # HU57FR so you get the surge protection. What kind of trailer do you have?

  • Can SoftStartUp Plug In Soft Start Work On Variable Speed AC Unit?
Hey Kenneth, I understand what you're saying. Basically we say the SoftStartUp Plug-In Soft Start for RV Air Conditioners # SSR64FR won't be as beneficial to an AC unit that has variable speed such as the newer Furrion AC units, and that is because they draw less amperage at startup and are very efficient already from the factory. So while you can use the SoftStartUp, it just won't be as big of in impact when using the variable speed AC units compared to a standard AC unit. What AC system...

  • Can I Use The SoftStartUp SSR64FR On My Residential Application?
Hey Frank, Yes, even though it is labeled as an RV application the SoftStartUp # SSR64FR can be used with RV and household applications. You will be able to use this with your setup. With no complex wiring or installation, its a simple plug and play application, much simpler than other soft starts out there. I recommend double checking just to make sure your AC is not going to pull more power than the 50 amps it is rated for. What kind of generator do you have in this setup?

Hi Gary; for a soft start you can use the SoftStartRV # SSR54FR or for a plug in version the Active Controls ActiveStart # AS44FR (30 amp) or # SSR64FR (50 Amp). All of these are compatible with the Furrion Chill HE RV Air Conditioner System # FR23TD. Since you're replacing an AC have you considered the Chill Cube? • Furrion Chill HE SoftStart Compatibility Explained for Dual AC RV Setup
Hi Michael, that’s a great question and you’re absolutely right to double check this first since the goal is to smooth out those startup spikes without creating new issues. Your Furrion FACR15HESA2-BL-AM Chill HE units (part # FR58TD) are not variable speed ACs, they use a traditional on and off compressor with selectable fan speeds, so they don’t fall into the inverter style category that plug in SoftStart units won’t work with. From that standpoint, the SoftStartUp part # SSR64FR is compatible...

  • Will Installing A Soft Start Void My AC Units Warranty?
Hey Scott, thanks for reaching out. Generally speaking, installing a soft start will not void your Ac units warranty. Your AC warranty is protected by the by the federal Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act. This act states, in part, that unless the installation and/or the part caused a problem then the warranty cannot be voided. So as long as the soft start is properly installed, you'll be good to go. We have not had any customers report that a manufacturer wanted to void their air conditioner...
