Can SoftStartUp Plug In Soft Start Work On Variable Speed AC Unit?
Updated 04/22/2026 | Published 04/14/2026 >
Question:
I read that the soft start shouldn’t be used on variable speed units, my AC has a two speed fan motor, high and low. Is this a problem?

Hey Kenneth, I understand what you're saying.
Basically we say the SoftStartUp Plug-In Soft Start for RV Air Conditioners # SSR64FR won't be as beneficial to an AC unit that has variable speed such as the newer Furrion AC units, and that is because they draw less amperage at startup and are very efficient already from the factory. So while you can use the SoftStartUp, it just won't be as big of in impact when using the variable speed AC units compared to a standard AC unit.
What AC system do you have? Just because you have low and high fan speed doesn't mean it's a variable speed ac unit. Also, keep in mind if your RV has an automatic transfer switch, this won't be compatible.

No, I am not sure what you mean by variable speed, my A/C also has 2 speeds and I haven't had any problems with it.
