Question:

Hi, i am interested in part SSR64FR, RV Ac soft start. We just purchased a 2024 Grand Design 2500RL model. Camper has an internal bull dog watchdog surge protector. We are also planning on using a corded 50amp surge protector by Gear Go rv surge protector at the campground and when boondocking. Campground setup in order would be, electrical pedestal connected to the Gear go surge protector followed by the AC RV Soft Start and then the 50amp cord connected to the camper. Boondocking setup in order would be, Generators will be Champion single fuel 4000 watt generator 30 amps Harbor Freight Predator 5000 watt generator 30 amps Connected in order as 30 amp gear go surge protector, RV Ac soft start, followed up with the 50amp cord connected to the camper. Camper has 50 amp service due to two 15000btu Furion Ac units. Both are 15000btu each. I am trying to confirm if there would be any errors or tripping of the breaker when using the RV AC Soft Start for the two setups above? Can you buy an extended warranty if needed? I have looked all over the internet for an actual video by someone who camps. Do you know if E-trailer would ever consider sending/sponsoring someone to do an actual video of both setups and post on etrailer and/or youtube associated with E-trailer? Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Thanks, Garland

Hello, Garland.

Using both a built-in surge protector and a portable surge protector will not damage anything, but it can be redundant. If one protector disconnects due to a power issue, the other may also shut down because it senses the sudden loss of power. This is normal behavior and not a fault with the SoftStart.

The SoftStartUp Plug-In SoftStart part # SSR64FR is compatible with dual AC setups like yours and is designed to reduce the startup surge of the air conditioners. This helps minimize breaker trips during AC startup, especially when power is limited.

Please note that while the SoftStart reduces the startup surge, it does not reduce the running amperage of the air conditioners. Once both AC units are running, total power demand is still a factor. When operating on 30-amp power or generators, it is possible that only one AC may be able to run at a time, depending on what other appliances are in use.

Any reason why you want to have two surge protectors in your set up?
