With a 3,500-lb gross trailer weight rating and 525-lb tongue weight limit, this hitch covers the jobs most folks actually do—hauling a small camper, pulling a boat, or carrying bikes on a rear-mounted rack. The 2" x 2" receiver size works with common ball mounts, cargo carriers, and bike racks, so you don’t have to chase down adapters to use the gear you already own.
This hitch bolts directly to the vehicle’s frame using the included mounting hardware. There’s no welding or fabrication involved, just precision-fit brackets that line up where they’re supposed to. That means it can go on in a home garage or driveway with standard tools—no special shop equipment needed.
The sturdy square-tube design is precision welded by robots for consistent strength throughout the frame. A gloss black powder coat over a protective base layer keeps rust and corrosion at bay, even after years of exposure to road grime or moisture. It’s designed to stay solid and look good doing it.
The concealed cross-tube design keeps most of the hitch tucked out of sight, leaving only the receiver visible under the bumper. You get the function of a full Class III hitch without changing the look of the rear end. It’s a clean, factory-like setup that fits right in.

I would give this 5 stars, but the box was damaged significantly and the hitch was scratched up. It appeared that it was shipped this way as the label was put on over the tape repairing the tears in the box.
Installation was involved, as expected. We had to drill multiple holes and fish hardware inside the frame rails. But all the needed hardware was included, the instructions were clear, it went together as expected. It took us about 90 minutes to complete the installation. I do have air tools and a lift that allowed me to get the car up in the air which made this MUCH easier. I would add another hour to the installation time if you're working on the ground.

I see that your hitch has received some scratches on it due to shipping. This does tend to happen and when it does, we recommend using a Rust-oleum type paint to cover up any scratches and prevent corrosion in the future during use. I have a link below for your reference. The video we found for the 2016 X1 was not accurate. We only had to loosen the muffler / exhaust system to get the hitch installed. Taking off the bumper, heat shield, etc just wastes time and is unnecessary for a 2017 X1.
Hitch is great. Little harder to install on my 2017 BMW X1 than I thought, but nothing the local shop couldn’t help with. Great personalized customer service from etrailer. Would definitely buy from them again.

Very good hitch, though needed more drilling than the instructions indicated. Shipping was slowed, but only because of a natural disaster here. Good value.
Product is excellent, and fits the 2017 BMW X1 perfectly.
Full disclosure though - installation is not as easy as just threading a few bolts. You have to remove the bumper surround and heat shield, disconnect some of the parking assist electronics, drill holes in the frame, etc. The project took me two hours (a professional could do it in half the time, I suspect).
Love it! Really straight forward install... There were a few discrepancies between the paper instructions vs. the installation video. Maybe the paper instructions were written prior to 2016 X1? I don’t know, but following the installation video is the way to go. Any person with a sense of mechanical knowledge, this is really straight forward.
I fitted an etrailer hitch to my BMW x-1 a year ago. It's worked perfectly and without any........er.....hitches.
In spite of some good packaging, the hitch came punched thru the cardboard at one end. My concern was the bolts which could have fallen out, might be missing, but everything was securely taped to the middle of the hitch. I had Uhaul install it the following week without a problem, but it did take the kid a couple of hours. Glad to have them do it based on the video and some reviews here. BMW 2017 X1 - they, BMW, said you couldn't put a hitch on this car so I foolishly believe them for years. Fits great, thanks etrailer & Curt!
I bought this trailer hitch for my BMW X1 in order to attach a bike rack. It’s a perfect fit, hardly notice it when the bike rack isn’t on, highly recommend!
Trailer Hitch for my BMW X1 worked out great. We are using it for a bike rack and it is perfect for the two bikes we will be hauling. I believe it is a little more involved in attaching for people that think they will be just bolting it on to the frame. I had a friend of mine, who owns a body shop, install it. It took him a couple hours to do, but came out great.
Perfect fit on the X1. Loved the 2" hitch for lugging the bike rack around. The tow-hitch was solid and had no issues once installed. I would happily buy this hitch again for the next car.
Good fit to vehicle. Excellent quality hitch receiver. However, neck of receiver is recessed 1 to 2" under bumper, so an extended ball mount had to be purchased after finding the original standard-length one did not provide enough clearance between the ball and bumper.
No problems with the hitch, nothing missing, works as expected. The installation video was very good, but convinced me to pay a mechanic to do the work. Glad I did: previous installation experience makes a big difference.

The trailer hitch was exactly as described, the pricing was excellent, and installation video really helpful. The hitch continues to pull various loads safely.

Still going strong after regular use. Would but again from etrailer.
Just received my hitch today. Won't be installing it right away, garage is full.
As a welder myself the welds look great, materials used are not flimsy. Finish is nice.
Has some weight to it so a little help will be needed.
Box it came in was a touch to big for the item so it bounces around in there, box was also damaged but that's the
Transport company. Can't wait to install it. Great service, and follow ups with etrailer staff. Thanks

Installed the hitch 2 weeks ago after having it for a year. Been working 7 days a week. Install was a bit of a pain but thats because i worked on the ground and was alone to do it. A floor jack helped. It would be good to have a half inch more of space between the flat bars where the bolts go, wouldnt have to trim the aluminum sheild a quarter inch on each side to make it fit. Other than that im happy with the product.????
This hitch receiver fits perfectly and looks great. I love it! etrailer seems to have the best quality products in the market.

As far as the product itself is concerned I have absolutely no problems as it is a very well-made sturdy hitch and I’m sure it will serve many years of trouble free service. However as for the installation for a weekend garage mechanic, I felt that the 1-hour estimate for how long it would take were inaccurate. I’m a repeat etrailer customer and have installed 4 hitches on previous vehicles so I’m not a beginner and I have all the necessary ramps, jacks, drills, wrenches, torque wrench and the necessary hand tools. The problem came with drilling 5 large holes into the vehicle frame and having the scorching hot metal shavings landing on your arms and neck area was definitely a problem and no matter how clean you try to keep the area you are still laying in sharp metal shavings while you are trying to complete the installation. Even gloves, long sleeves, dust mask and safety glasses doesn’t keep the metal shavings from finding (and burning) bare skin. So this is just a note of caution for garage mechanics to beware of the conservative installation time noted (I took 4 hours). I also watched the very detailed and extremely helpful [installation] video several times to make sure I had all of the right tools but when a vehicle is up on a professional lift and access is easier the install will go much smoother. The video does not address the home mechanic reality.
