Question:

I have a VW Golf and am looking to tow a lightweight motorcycle trailer and motorcycle around 700lbs. Im not sure what the differences are between the receiver sizes - which one should I get?

Expert Reply:

For lighter duty vehicles like your 2020 Volkswagen Golf a 1-1/4 inch hitch like the Curt part # C11412 would be your best option for towing a smaller trailer.

You'll also need trailer wiring like part # 118646, ball mount # 3593, and hitch ball # 19256.

If you have a GTI model, the Stealth Hitch # SH79ZR is a 2" but you cannot use to tow, the EcoHitch Stealth Trailer Hitch Receiver is also a 2" # 306-X7375 that is confirmed to fit the GTI. If you do not have the GTI model, then there are only the 1-1/4" hitches available.

Whenever available I recommend the 2 inch hitch size over 1-1/4 inch hitches since they typically have better weight capacities as well as have more accessories made for them as well. For towing a small trailer I'd strongly recommend the 2 inch hitch as well.
