Installation of Tekonsha T-One Connector

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the body harness up to your car battery and connect the wires per the included instructions.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 7-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 7-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a 2-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's 3-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter splices into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located to the left of the steering column, through a grommet in the engine compartment.

This adapter is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller after splicing into your vehicle's wiring. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 22117 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Seven Way Vehicle Wiring Harness with the Brake Controller Adapter. This is a custom fit part, it is designed to fit the 2016 and newer Toyota Tacoma's without the factory tow package. And on a custom fit part, I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show if this will work for your application. Now this towing prep kit will replace a damaged factory seven way blade style trailer connector, the back of your vehicle. It'll enable your truck to power your trailer's signal lights and it is compatible with four pull, five pull and six pull adapters, that we do sell separately on our website. The T-1 connectors will connect quickly and easily, they just plug into connection points behind your tail lights, and then you run this body harness up to the vehicles battery. It does include this black box, which is the tail light converter, and that's to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of you trailer. Now the wiring adapter eases installation of your electric brake controller.

The wire end slices into your vehicle's wiring, the other end will plug into the back of your electric brake controller. It is designed to fit compatible time delay brake controllers by Draw-Tite, like the Draw-Tite Activator One, Draw-Tite Activator Two, Draw-Tite Activator Three and the Tekonsha Power Track. And it's also compatible with proportional brake controllers by Tekonsha, the Tekonsha Prodigy, the Tekonsha P2, Tekonsha P3, the Primus IQ and the Tekonsha Voyager. A few specs on this whole kit is the maximum amperage on the stop and turn light circuit is 4.2 amps per circuit and on the tail light is six amps total. Does come with everything shown here, it even has a nice set of detailed instructions that'll show you how everything's connected. But that should do it for the review on the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Seven Way Vehicle Wiring Harness with the Brake Controller Adapter.

I did have two small missing pieces of hardware, the screw or nut option for grounding at the drivers side tail light were not to be found. I got a 6mm flange nut at the hardware store so no problem. This wiring harness exceeded my expectations. I did not want a 'universal fit' style harness. This harness absolutely fit my 2017 Tacoma like it was right from the factory assembly line. I spent 40 years troubleshooting non-automotive wire harness's on various industrial and military equipment and found the quality of the electrical components used in this harness to be the best available. Highly recommend. 512968

All the wiring and connectors fit perfectly for my 2019 Tacoma. The quality of the harness was very good and I appreciated the small touches like taping the ends of the wires going to the battery to make it easier to run up the body of the truck. The instructions are not super well written, but watching videos of similar harnesses got me where I needed to go. A couple complaints are that my kit did not have double sided tape (instructions indicated it should have been included). I also ended up needing longer zip ties in some places since the provided ones were short. The instructions indicated that there would be a ground stud in the drivers side tail light bay, but there was not one. I ended up grounding the harness by attaching it to the vehicle frame, so a self tapping screw would have been a good inclusion. Lastly many trucks/SUVs have built in spots on the bumpers to simply snap in the port, so I would have liked to see an option to swap out the generic port with one that fit my vehicle (I ended up ordering one separately and used it instead of the included one) 698612

Very straight forward installation. It does take a while to snake the wiring harness from the rear to the battery. My only problem was that the instructions for installing the wiring butt connectors did not state that they needed to be crimped. These were a new type for me, with heat activated sealant, and I assumed that the heat made the connection as well. Live and learn! I chose this wiring harness as it had a 7 pin connector, which plugged into a 7 pin/4 pin socket (etrailer item #40975), which perfectly replaced the OEM blank. 679379

Ask the Experts about this Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

Do you have a question about this Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring?

  • Adding 7-Way and 4-Way Connectors to a 2018 Toyota Tacoma Without the Tow Package
  • The best (and easiest) wiring kit that we have for your 2018 Toyota Tacoma (without the tow package) is the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness # 22117. This comes with everything needed to add a fully functioning 7-Way and 4-Way on your pickup. It connects your basic lighting functions with the T-Connectors that you mentioned and has the rest of the wiring bundled in a loom to make running them up to your cab/engine compartment much easier. This kit even comes with a pigtail...

  • 7-Way Trailer Connector for 2019 Toyota Tacoma
  • If you want a fully functioning 7-way on your 2019 Toyota Tacoma you can use part # 22117. This includes everything you need including the wiring to install a brake controller which you don't need since your trailer doesn't have brakes. If you would prefer to just have a 7-way that powers the trailer's lights and nothing more then instead I recommend installing a 4-way connector, part # 118685, and then converting it to a 7-way using an adapter, part # 37185.
