Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side interior trim panel in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in the jack storage compartment of your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2011 Acura MDX

Today, on our 2011 acura mdx, we're going to be installing the draw type T1 vehicle wiring harness, with full pull 00:00:07 flat trailer connector. Part number 118424. We're going to 1st begin here by raising the rear hatch of the vehicle. Next we'll go ahead and lift this cover here, set it up out of the way. We'll then go ahead and remove the jack here, so we got to take the cover out 1st. Next, we'll need to go ahead and remove the rear threshold here at the rear of the vehicle. You simply lift up gently, we've got to pull out from the tabs.

To make things a little easier to see, we're going to go ahead and take this screw out on this side as well as the other side, so that we can remove this whole piece of carpet here. Lift this up out of the way. Next we're going to need to remove this door here that gives us access to our fuse panel. Now this port right here in the fuse block is what we'll be plugging into. We're taking this in here, our wiring kit, then go ahead and reach up, underneath this piece of carpet here, pull it out the other side. We'll then go ahead and plug it in to our fuse block.

Making sure that we hear the locking tab click into place. Next we're going to go ahead and take the white wire with the ring terminal on the end of it. We're going to go ahead and go around this wiring harness here, this is the factory wiring harness and ride our wire over here. Because this right here is a factory ground. We go ahead and pull the bolt out and add our white wire in line. Next, we're going to need to clean the surface in here with a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel. That way our 2 sided adhesive will adhere the box to the body of the vehicle.

We're going to mount the box in there, something like that. Go ahead and fill the backing of the 2 sided tape on the box. Then we can push it firmly against the wall here. We can go ahead and put our door back over our fuse box. Now we can go ahead and put our interior pieces back in that we removed earlier. We can go ahead and put our threshold back on.

Now when you want to use your four flat for towing, you simply raise the rear cover here. Pull the four flat out, close the rear cover. Want to make sure you stay away from the center latch areas that could damage the wire. When you close the rear hatch, the four flat wiring will be pushed into the weather stripping here and not damaged. Go ahead and close our rear hatch. When you're done towing, you simply raise the hatch. Lift back up the cover, we'll go ahead and store our four flat wiring in the vehicle to help protect it from the elements. Now we're going to go ahead and take our test light and test our four flat wiring out. Go ahead and take the ground on the test light and connect it to the white wire or the open prone 00:04:00 in the four flat. Then with our running lights on, we go ahead and touch the brown wire. You can see here that's working. For the left tunnel, touch the yellow wire. That's working as well. For the right tunnel, touch the green wire. For the brakes, we'll touch either the yellow or the green. If you can see here, all of our functions are working just fine. With that, that will do it for our installation. The draw type T1 vehicle wiring harness, with full pull flat trailer connector. Part number 118424 on our 2011, acura mdx. .

Installed it in less than 15 minutes, hooked it up to the trailer and it works great. The dealer wanted to charge me close to a thousand dollars to wire my MDX. 108075

The product was delivered quickly and in good condition and the company sent emails indicating when it was sent and when it should have arrived. It installed easily and the instructions (both those that came with the product and the video on the website) were clear. 29082

Let's see, $40 on this wiring harness or $200+ to get it wired from factory? Financially, it made sense so I decided to try it out. The wiring was super easy and the instructions were perfect! I wired mine a bit differently so it actually goes down through the bottom of the floor panel and I zip tied it to the actual hitch so it is almost like a permanent mount. The wiring itself only took about 15 minutes. This is a great alternative to factory wiring. I used this on a 2007 acura mdx. 249734

I am very pleased with quality of the Curt hitch as well as the excellent fit. It was a bit tight, but this is a good thing. An extra pair of hands helped with installation. E trailer sent it out quickly and it was received within several days. Much sooner than I expected. Wiring was quick and easy to install. 21974

I installed the hitch on my 2013 Acura MDX the day after I received it. The video instructions on the "etrailer" website were a great help and the installation was made following the tips and suggestions included in the videos and reviews. I installed it by myself and used a bottle jack (with a block of wood) to position the hitch for mounting. I did not raise the vehicle and installed the hitch with the vehicle's tires on the ground. From start to finish, the installation time was about 2 hours (including borrowing 1/2" drive 18 mm and 22 mm sockets from a neighbor to tighten the mounting bolts). The installed hitch is unobtrusive, doesn't impact ground clearance, and looks like a "factory" installation. The product arrived when promised and was in excellent condition as delivered. 83952

The harness was easy to install with the youtube video. Just follow the direction shown on the video. I visited U-haul store to make sure it works properly and it does. The process was predictable and I couldn't have done it without the youtube video. The Acura dealer wanted to charge me $400, but i did it myself with $50. 28343

This is a replacement item that I purchased a few years ago that for some unknown reason went on the fritz. Current getting to the controller but not going thru to the wiring for the trailer. Impossible to take apart to see if fixable so bought a new one. This one works, at least so far. Use the trailer twice a year but think working lights are a good idea. Installation is much easier the second time, not very difficult the first time either. Great service in gettng me the part on etrailer.com. 17310

Product arrived on time and in perfect condition! Very EASY to install and I owe it all to watching the videos provided on the site. I had my cell phone in and under the car and watched step by step on how to install both the hitch and wiring harness. Hardest part was holding up the hitch...had to ask my wife to climb under the car with me for the extra hand! Not that its hard just awkward angles to wrench and hold at the same time. I've seen some reviews that others used a floor jack if an extra hand isn't available which I think is a great idea! 147200

Pros: Plug & Play. 4-way lead is plenty long. Cons: The grounding wire is too short. Did not come with double sided tape as the instructions say it should have. For a factory looking install, the white grounding wire is too short for a 2007 Acura MDX. I removed the felt cargo tray in the back of my MDX and removed two circular rubber grommets from the sheet metal below, which allowed me to route the 4-way electrical connector out of the bottom of the car (near the spare tire) and permanently mount the trailer connector to a bracket on the hitch. I like this setup better than the instructions which say to store the 4-way lead in the cargo tray and just run it out the hatchback door when towing. The trouble is, if you want to put the ModuLite power module out of sight (aka behind/within the interior trim), the grounding wire is too short (even per the installation instructions). With the ground connected and the length of grounding wire they give you, the module would end up under the felt cargo tray after the tray is re-installed, and there's no space for it. The tray would bulge very awkwardly. I solved it by splicing in 6 additional inches of 12-14 gauge wire on the grounding line and then tucking the module into a very convenient cavity under the MDX's electric junction box on the drivers side of the car. Also, instruction step 3 says that the harness should include some double sided tape to mount the module (basically to keep it from rattling); mine didn't come with any tape. So, for needing to splice in 6 inches of grounding wire and for having to provide my own double-sided tape, I deducted one star. Other than that, install was pretty easy. 424150

The ground wire on this product is not long enough to reach from the suggested ground point to the side trim area, where you need to mount the black box. If you mount the black box on the floor of the cargo area, the cargo area liner would not fit back in properly. I had to use an alternate ground point, which I found way back underneath the side trim. Worked fine, just not as easy to access. 399449

Called to get info on installing trailer wiring. Geoffrey was super helpful. I also got the hitch and ball and a the led tester for the lights. It all arrived in a few days and was easy as pie to install. Even included the self-tapping screw. My Acura dealer quoted me $450 for this job, even after I sent them the info on the kit and a video showing how easy it is to install. 661005

2009 Acura MDX

Installation in our 2009 MDX was a snap! The unit plugs directly into the terminal panel near the left rear corner of the cargo area, and there's plenty of room in the space below the cargo floor to mount the controller unit (I used 3M double-stick foam mounting tape if my own, as the pieces referenced in the instructions were not included). As other reviewers have noted, the white ground wire is too shot to reach the main grounding lug where grounds for everything else in the area connect to, but I found a 6mm (?) threaded boss under the surface pad just to the left of the opening for the jack, which worked perfectly for securing the ground wire. I ran the flat-4 connector thru a small slit I cut in the wide rubber grommet under the plastic shield in the jack compartment (where the OEM harness runs thru - be careful not to nick any if those wires when cutting!) and then zip tied it along the top of the hitch tube down to the bracket for the connector (be careful not to let the wiring hang down and contact the heat shield though). I re-sealed the penetration thru the slit in the grommet (interior and exterior sides) using some black silicon RTV gasket maker I had on hand, but any other silicon product would prob work as well. The whole installation was a total cakewalk, and the end result looks very professional if I do say so myself! I did chuck the cheesy mounting screws that came with the connector mounting bracket though, and used some 6mm SS machine screws w/SS lock washers and nuts that I had on hand. Had to drill out the mounting holes in the bracket but it was no issue. Sprayed it black afterwards to match all else. 643691

The product can be installed as indicated in the videos; however, the 2012 MDX Advance has an additional equipment installed below the electrical connection box that makes it much harder to thread the electrical connector up to the electrical box. • When installing the Tow Ready Wiring Harness, part # 118424, and you find that you have no power to the wiring harness you probably need the relay as stated on our site under Tech tips. You will need to visit your Acura dealership to have the relay installed. They would be able to advise you concerning the best location for installation. One of our folks here said that most Acuras have the relay installed but on occasion it has not been there and requires the dealer to take care of it.

  • Hitch Height on 2009 Acura MDX and Ball Mount Compatibility
  • When we installed 2-inch Curt Class III hitch # 13354 on a 2009 MDX we found that the top of the receiver opening was indeed 17-inches above ground, although this can vary slightly from car to car depending on the amount of tread wear and factors like passenger and cargo weight. Since all tow vehicles will exhibit some degree of rear-end squat when a trailer is hitched to them, it is a good idea to have the starting height of the hitch ball on the MDX about 1-inch HIGHER than the top...

  • Tail Light Kit for a Curt Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier
  • Since there is no specific light kit that will fit the Curt carrier # C18153 what you will need to do is use a light kit like # 98174LED, and then add 2 brackets, # BK70BB. You will also need some self-tapping screws # FA1131822, or drill and use the hardware of your choice to mount the brackets. Also, make sure that your MDX has a 4-Way trailer connector to plug the light kit into. If you need to add trailer wiring, use # 118424 or # C56038.

  • Recommendation for Brake Controller and Wiring for 2007 Acura MDX without Tow Package
  • It sounds like your MDX doesn't have the factory tow package, if the 7-way controller isn't mounted to the back of the vehicle. The good news is that I can help you outfit your 2007 Acura MDX for a 7-way and brake controller. Since the vehicle isn't already prewired for a 7-way, you will need to hardwire the vehicle. You will not need the adapter because the brake controller will include a universal harness. To equip your vehicle with a 7-way you will need the 4-way # 118424 and...

  • Recommended Light Kit for Curt Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier
  • There is no light kit specifically designed for the Curt Cargo Carrier, part # C18153, but we do have a solution that will work for you. You can use an LED light kit like part # 98174LED. You would then need two brackets, part # BK70BB. To attach the brackets to the carrier you will need self-tapping screws like part # FA1131822 or you can use other hardware to mount the light brackets. This light kit does come with a 4-way trailer connector so if your Acura needs a wiring harness...

  • 7-Way and Brake Controller Recommendation for 2010 Acura MDX
  • You will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one) on your 2010 Acura MDX to install a 7-way and brake controller. For that you would want the # 118424. From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. I attached installation instructions and an install video for this product as well. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy...

  • Is Custom 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness 118424 Better than Curt Wiring Harness 56038 for an Acura MDX
  • Both the Tow Ready wiring # 118424 and Curt wiring # C56038 are correct fits for the Acura MDX, but the # 118424 is a confirmed fit for more model years. The # 118424 will fit 2007 through 2010 MDX models, while the # C56038 is only confirmed to fit 2007 through 2008 models. Both wiring harnesses plug in at the same factory port, as they are both custom fit for the vehicle, and both feature a powered converter to protect the MDX electrical system. I have included links to an installation...

  • How To Connect a 5-Way Trailer Connector To a 4-Way Vehicle Connector on a 2007 Acura MDX
  • You are correct, the 5th pin on the 5-pin connector is to provide the reverse lockout feature for surge brakes on the trailer. It will have to tap into the reverse light circuit of your vehicle to operate properly. We have a part that is designed just for that purpose. It is the Tow Ready 4 Pole to 5 Pole Wiring Adapter, part # 20036. This adapter will plug into the 4-Way connector on your 2007 Acura MDX and the extra blue wire would be spliced into the reverse light circuit on your...

  • Mounting Bracket Recommendation for a 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2011 Acura MDX
  • To attach wiring harness # 118424 to the hitch you can use a different type of mounting bracket that does not require screwing into the plastic fascia. You can install the wiring harness like in the video I have linked and then use the 4-Flat Universal Mounting Bracket, # 118149 which will just zip tie to the hitch.
