The SkyBox NX lid opens from both sides so you can easily access cargo from the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. If you are parked on a busy street, in a tight parking lot, or even next to a campground picnic table, you have the option of opening the lid from the side of the vehicle that works best for you.
The fortified lid has an easy-access edge and spring-loaded hinges that allow for smooth, one-handed operation. Also, since the lid is extra-stiff, it helps reduce road noise and vibration. Finally, it has a nano-texture finish that helps guard against dings and scratches when you're on the road or when the box is in storage.
The SkyBox has security latches on both sides to ensure the lid is completely closed and locked. This system prevents you from removing the key from the lock unless all 3 internal latches are engaged. That way, you are prevented from removing the key and driving off with an unlocked box. Also, the SKS lock core can be swapped out to make all your Yakima gear keyed alike.
The SkyBox installs with mounting clamps that slide along tracks in the floor of the box. These clamps fit most crossbar styles and they adjust for different crossbar spreads. To adjust the clamps, loosen the knobs with the included torque tool and slide them to the desired location. Then, tighten the knobs and close the clamps around your crossbars.

I used the SkyBox and the added storage space on top really helped alleviate the cramped feeling we would have had in the car. The two sided opening also made packing and unpacking significantly easier than single side toppers. My only complaint is The installation tool could be a bit more ergonomic, but that's a nitpick and it's better than any other install tool I've used anyway. With a growing family, we've been running out of space in our Traverse when driving to and from vacation. The SkyBox lets us move nearly all the luggage on top of the car, freeing up more room inside. This is perfect for anyone with a need for extra storage!
Bought this to replace a Sears box (I think was made by Thule). Like that it opens from either side for installation. The old one required Gorilla arms to tighten.

Performed perfectly on 28 hour round trip at interstate speeds. There's nothing more I could have asked from it. I was a little late when I realized I needed this box and the only place I could have gotten from in time was etrailer. Everything worked out and I was so relieved!
3 things- & I wish they had a 4.5 star option… I would have given that .
#1- this is the BEST roof box( for me )I have ever seen/ owned and I’ve had Thule pulse and Force boxes and other Yakima’s . I like the textured finish - looks rugged and speak at the same time. The metal tubular frame on interior really helps with the rigidity of the ABS plastic. The lever opening and closing is very nice especially because it clicks when closed so your not jamming the key hoping all guides are lined up like in the Thule pulse.. also the squareish lines match my 2nd gen Tundra wonderfully
#2- etrailer has always been a Go Too for me mainly due to their excellent customer service . Their response time is excellent and the team is very knowledgeable and eager to help.
#3- only reason for the non 5 star review is shipping took 7-8 days longer than expected … which threw a wrench in personal travel plans… I ordered this item through etrailer and not Yakima due to expected delivery date… didn’t work out. However the item did arrive in excellent condition when it arrived .
If you’re reading this review to see if The Sky Box NX is worth the money then hell yes it is …& would I purchase it again through etrailer… probably ;) they are great people and feels good to support them.
Great experience with etrailer. Skybox was shipped in a plastic wrapped box and strapped to a wooden pallet so it arrived in great shape. Pricing from etrailer was good and the free shipping made the deal. Attached the box to the 4runner and it looks great.

I had been thinking about buying this box for a long time, and when the perfect moment finally came, it did not disappoint. We needed extra space due to our move to another state, and this roof box was a lifesaver — the two of us, plus our dog, were running out of space in our SUV. The car was literally packed with a mix of furniture and personal belongings.
The box fits 4 suitcases: 2 large and 2 small, which exceeded my expectations! We had an amazing trip from the very north to the south of Florida. The box is durable, surprisingly light for its size, and easy to install. The real game changer is that it has 2 locks on both sides, so we felt at ease knowing our belongings were secure during overnight parking.
With this roof box, we will definitely start traveling more — because traveling with our pup is not an easy feat. Highly recommended, worth every penny!
Purchased for my 2023 Honda Pilot with factory crossbars. The cargo box is an excellent value compared to other products in this size range. It can easily hold our soft luggage for a family of 5. I also find the locking mechanism and hinge design very thoughtful - I'm confident the carrier is fully closed and locked. I also like the integrated torque wrench clamps; they are very low profile and I'm confident the box isn't going anywhere. Yakima should include straps at the price point.
