Carpet Diagram

Note: This 18" wide carpeting is designed for use on 4x8, 3x8, and 2x6 boards. If you use this on your 4x8 bunk boards, a small section of the board will be exposed on the underside.

Protect Your Boat's Hull

Over time, the carpeting that covers your bunk boards can wear down or even tear apart. This can lead to scratches on your boat's hull. Replacing the carpeting periodically ensures protection for your boat, and it will also prevent your wooden bunk boards from rotting.

Replacing Bunk Board Carpeting

To get started, remove the old carpet from your bunk boards, doing your best to remove any old staples and bolts from the boards as well.

Cut the carpet to the appropriate length and lay it down so that the backing is facing up, then place your bunk board on top. Make sure that there's enough extra carpet to wrap around the sides and ends of the board. Then wrap the carpet around one side and staple it in place.

Once you're done with the first side, tightly pull the carpet around the opposite edge of the board and secure it with staples. Loose carpet can easily snag or tear, leaving the wooden board vulnerable to moisture or damage.

Once both sides are securely attached, tuck any extra carpet at the ends in tightly, like you're wrapping a package, and secure the ends to the board with staples.

Video Transcript for CE Smith Delux Marine-Grade Carpeting Installation

Today in our pontoon boat trailer, we'll be replacing the bunk carpet with the CE Smith Deluxe Marine Grade Carpeting in the black color, 18' long by 18" wide, Part Number CE11349. Now to begin with, you'll see here that the bunks for the pontoon sit on each side are pretty worn out, the carpet is torn up and dry rotted as well as the boards themselves are actually dry rotted on this particular trailer. We will be replacing the boards in addition to the carpeting. Now if your boards are still in good shape, you can just pull the old carpeting off and reinstall the new carpeting as shown. In our case though we'll be reusing new boards. Now we're ready to begin with our carpeting. Now this particular carpeting is 18' long by 18" wide but this particular trailer uses 2 x 4 boards so we're going to go ahead and fold the carpet in half and cut it in two sections so that it will be 18' long by 9" wide. Now to cut our carpet in half, we'll just use a razor knife and to help things go straight, we're going to use a couple of the new boards that we're putting on this trailer.

You can use anything that will help you keep a straight edge, whether it be another 2 x 4, 2 x 6 or some other means of making sure that you get a nice, clean, straight cut. Now that we have our carpet cut into two sections, the 18' long x 9" wide, now we're ready to begin by putting our carpet on our new boards. Or, if you choose not to put new boards on, you can reuse the old ones. If you do choose to reuse the old ones, it's a good idea to try to pull out as many staples or whatever means we're holding your carpet in place before you put the new carpet on. It will just make things go on a little bit easier. Now we'll go ahead and put our carpet down with the top side facing the ground and then we'll center our board on top of that.

You want to kind of do a little quick test fit to make sure that there is enough carpet on either side to wrap it on the underside of the board to where you can staple it. Now for connecting the carpet to the board, you can either use an air stapler or in our case, we're going to have to use a hand stapler. We'll be using 9/16" long staples to attach our carpet to the new boards. You'll begin by running down one side of the board followed by, once you have one side of the carpet stapled to the board, you'll then go ahead and staple the other side. As you staple the other side, you want to make sure that you pull the carpet tight as it wraps around the board keeping tension on it as you put the staples in on the other side.

Youll go ahead and repeat this process all the way down the length of the board. And once you get to the ends, we'll need to kind of tuck each of the ends in kind of like you're wrapping a package. As you wrap both ends in, put a couple of staples in to help hold it in place and then we'll take the excess carpet and fold it up over so we can staple it underneath the board giving it a nice, clean finished look. Now, any areas where there is a hole where it will allow you to attach the board to the trailer itself, you may want to take your razor knife and cut out a small "x" or "v" area so that it makes putting your bolt back in much easier. Now that we have the first board completed, we'll go ahead and do the same thing for the second board. Now that the second board has the carpet all stapled onto it, now we're ready to put our boards back onto the trailer itself.

If using your original boards again, you'll be able to line the lag bolts up with the same holes they came out of before. If you are putting new boards on, as long as you pre-drilled some holes, it will make things a little bit easier to put your boards in place. When drilling your holes, make sure that you only go about 1/4" in size depending upon your lag bolt and don't drill all the way into the board so that there's plenty of new wood for the lag bolt to dig in and bite solidly in to. By using the CE Smith Deluxe Marine Grade Carpeting and the 18' x 18" wide, it allowed us to just buy one roll of carpeting to do one side of our pontoon trailer. Instead of buying the carpet by the foot, this way it saves you a little bit of money. So to do a complete pontoon trailer with just two pontoons, you'll only need to purchase two packages. When you purchase two packages, it will give you enough carpet to do four boards that are 2 x 4 by 18' long. The CE Smith Marine Grade Carpeting is made of a soft fabric which minimizes scratches on your boat hull as well as being a durable weather resistant material that resists mold as well as mildew. The carpet also rinses off easily and dries quickly. The carpet does come with a three year warranty against fading and with that, that will conclude our installation of the CE Smith Deluxe Grade Carpeting in the black color, 18' long by 18" wide, part number CE11349 on our pontoon boat trailer. .

Excellent quality bunk carpet. Arrived in great condition. Product arrived promptly. CE Smith Marine carpet is thick and durable. Cuts cleanly and when applied to the bunks it looks great. Used 1/2" stainless staples to secure carpet along length and stainless screws with washers to secure end wraps. etrailer.com and CE Smith Bunk Carpet both deserve 5 stars. 446864

Nice product, delivered promptly (as always). Not having to chase materials locally, having UPS drop it at the gate is one way I buy time - worth every penny. Nice to have pre-cut material vs having to slit down to size from a large piece off the roll at the local big box store. I wanted more support than the standard 2x4 (finished dimension of course is only 1 1/2 thick) provides, so I ripped an 8' pressure treated 4x4 down to 2 1/4 thick. The comfort of knowing it will last longer than me was worth the extra effort. This material perfectly wrapped 2 each 8 foot bunks, with two layers on one side. I highly recommend using a slap stapler. Mine came from a pawn shop. 1/2" stainless staples from local box store. The slap stapler allows using lots of staples for secure attachment without carpal tunnel from squeezing the Arrow T50 hundreds of times. The 8 hours of spinning bolts / jacking to even load on 5 keel rollers, two bunks, winch column / jack.....that's another story. 279242

I want to thank you for all your help with my trailer you were more helpful than you realize. So this is my trailer for a 22' Flats Cat shallow draft Catamaran. I totally dismantled my trailer and buffed by hand with a wire buffer and sand blasted in some spots and applied multiple coats of some very expensive galvanize paint (Z.R.C.). I installed all new C. E. Smith Carpet (about 80'), seven new LED waterproof lights, new springs, new equalizers, new tongue jack, new wench, new safety chain, new chain brackets, all new SS hardware and a 35' long wiring harness. I was able to send only one review with a picture of the safety chain and brackets. I'm having a little trouble with the rest..oh some of these items were bought locally or from your competitors, until I found etrailer. Your prices were cheaper for the exact same things. Your helpful how to videos were helpful. And Rose, your personal helpful knowledge made my buying experience very pleasant, I actually enjoyed talking to you! Thanks to etrailer and specifically to Rose G. 497934

  • Recommended Carpet Width for Bunk Boards Measuring 2 Inches X 6 Inches
For 2 x 6 bunks you'll want the 18-inch width carpet # CE11349 in order to have full wrap-around coverage without exposed wood. As for wood, using treated could extend the life of the your bunk boards, but you will be also looking a higher cost then using untreated wood.

You will need to use the CE Smith U-Bolts # CE15283GA-8 to install these assemblies and both the brackets and bolts are galvanized for future protection from corrosion. • How Much Bunk Carpet is Needed for Six 20 Foot Long 2x4 Bunk Boards
You would need 7 of carpeting # CE11349 for six 2x4s that are 20 feet long. A 2x4 measures 10 inches around when you add up all 4 sides so you would not be able to use 18 inch wide carpeting between 2 boards. So if we go by length the total length of six 20 foot boards is 1,440 inches. Our longest roll of carpet is 216 inches. So taking 1,440 divided by 216 we get 6.6 rolls need, rounded up to 7. Or you could use 10 of # FCR8012 but I recommend going with 11 of this size because...
