Are these meant to be installed over the bunk carpet or are they an alternative and can be installed without carpet. Thanks.

Hello Bobby, thanks for reaching out. The Caliber Marine Slides # CA26AJ are meant to be installed over the bunk carpet, not as an alternative. If the current carpet is torn, or badly worn, we do recommend removing it and installing new carpet before you install the slides.
The CE Smith Deluxe Marine-Grade Carpeting for Bunk Boards # CE11349 is a great option if you need new carpet. It comes in a 18' long 18" wide roll.
