Replacement Threaded Bolt for Older Thule Vertex Bike Rack

Question:

Hi etrailer, I have an older model Thule Apex 4-bike trailer hitch bike rack, and need a new bolt for the hitch reciever lost the original locking one. The rack looks exactly like the Apex XT shown on your site, but the part that gets inserted into the trailer hitch looks a little different. Its just a basic black square plastic that goes into the trailer hitch. I needs a bolt like Part Number: HRHPN-13, but the listing doesnt confirm whether its the correct threading for my rack? Id just like a bolt that screws into the side of the trailer hitch, so I can tighten it to stop wobble and I would also like it to have the cotter pin at the end for safety. Do you have a product? Thanks

Hey John, thanks for reaching out!

Replacement bike rack parts can be a bit confusing to find, but I really like delving into this stuff and I'm pretty confident you're looking for the bolt for the older Thule Vertex bike rack, which looks similar to the newer Apex XT # TH9025XT. The exact replacement adapter and bolt parts for the Vertex are listed below:

- 12 x 40 mm Hitch Bolt # 908-1240-54
- M12 Washer # 951-1224-54
- M12 Lock Washer # 956122159
- 2" Hitch Adapter # 853-7489

The Hollywood Rack Replacement Pin # HRHPN-13 won't be compatible, but if you're wanting a pin that goes all the way through, we have the Thule Snug Tite Hitch Lock # THSTL2. There aren't any full-length hitch pins that work with a cotter pin and fit the Vertex, so you're either limited to the original bolt or the locking kit above.

I'm attaching a photo of the Vertex for you to compare with what you have - if yours looks different, feel free to shoot me a photo and I'd be more than happy to dig back into this and help you get your bike rack back up and running!

Hi Jon, Yes, I think you are correct. But I'm surprised this bolt is so short, and doesn't have an untreaded part that goes all the way through with a hole on the other side for a cotter pin for safety. What happens if his bolt comes loose and falls off? I guess it doesn't? I bought this rack used (with the missing bolt) but I had a similar X-Sport slipstream rack for years, and its bolt worked the same way, but extended through the other side for cotter pin. Will this will work without loosening and falling off? If so, I'll order. Thanks!

@John Valid concern, for sure! As long as you use the washer and lock washer that bolt will stay in place. I'm sure you've already figured this part out since you've been using the bike rack but also be sure you've got the bolt snugged up good enough that the play is out of the bike rack - this can be accomplished by wiggling the bike rack around while you're tightening the bolt. As long as there isn't any "slop" (movement) once the bolt is tightened, you'll be good to go! I will add that if you plan on leaving the rack on for long periods of time it's a good idea to periodically check the bolt as well.

Hi Jon, Is this part number the same thing that I need, but at lower cost for all the parts? Part Number: 7520990001 BTW, I do not need this part, I have this: 2" Hitch Adapter # 853-7489 Thanks!

@John Good find! I just cross-referenced the parts used in the Replacement Hardware Bag for Thule Hitching Post Pro and Parkway Bike Racks # 7520990001, and this kit does include the bolt and washers that I referenced above so this will definitely work!
