Will TurboCharged Engine Engage When Towing With 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

Question:

I’m considering getting a vehicle with a 2.5l turbo engine with a towing capacity of 5000 lbs. I currently have a 1850 lb trailer that I pull with a 3.5l V6, and use 50-75 gas. Is towing hard on a turbo engine? Would the turbo be engaged much of the time I assume up hill and into wind. Thanks, Doug

Hello Doug,

For a car with a 2.5L turbocharged engine like the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe with Curt Trailer Hitch # C37RV, for example, the turbocharged engine is going to engage when towing, yes. Turbo engines engage based on RPM, and towing adds stress to any vehicle's engine, but isn't harder on a turbo engine.

You can limit this a bit though, by not towing at absolute max capacity of the vehicle, and also making sure you are as level as possible and have good suspension enhancement, which helps distribute the towing weight to all four wheels. Sticking with the '24 Santa Fe as an example, you can help the back end stay level when towing with the Air Lift Helper Springs # AL29PD.
