Can a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD Be Dolly Towed
Updated 02/01/2022 | Published 01/31/2022 >
Question:
I assume that you can tow 4 wheel drive trucks on the dolly since you answered an question about a Jeep Wrangler FWD on the dolly. The vehicle I want to tow is a 2016 GMC Sierra single cab, short bed, with 20 inch tires. I will put the transfer case in Neutral for towing. Anything I should be concerned about?

According to the owner's manual, your 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with 4WD can be dolly towed. If you are planning to use the Demco Kar Kaddy SS Tow Dolly with Disc Brakes # DM9713045 you will have to make sure you do not exceed the maximum vehicle weight of 4,800 lbs and have a towed vehicle tread width of 42"-76". Depending on the exact model and what you have on the truck you may not be able to use this tow dolly. The only other option would be the # DM9713093 which would give you another 2" of vehicle tread width up to 78" but still has the same 4,800 lb max vehicle weight.
The following steps must be followed to dolly tow your truck:
1. Attach the dolly to the tow vehicle following the dolly manufacturer's instructions.
2. Drive the front wheels onto the dolly.
3. Shift the transmission to P (Park).
4. Set the parking brake.{ Warning Shifting a four-wheel-drive vehicle's transfer case into N (Neutral) can cause the vehicle to roll even if the transmission is in P (Park). You or others could be injured. Set the parking brake before shifting the transfer case to N (Neutral).
5. Use a clamping device designed for towing to ensure that the front wheels are locked into the straight position.
6. Secure the vehicle to the dolly following the manufacturer's instructions.
7. Shift the transfer case to N (Neutral).
8. Release the parking brake only after the vehicle being towed is firmly attached to the tow vehicle.
9. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF.
You will need to check your owner's manual to verify this information.
