Brake Control and Wiring for 7-Way on 2019 Kia Sorento Pulling Travel Trailer

Question:

I bought a 2019 Kia Sorento 3.3 L V6 FWD and I need to pull a small camper trailer. I had the hitch installed, but the Kia dealer did not install the 4 way hitch wiring. Does that need to be done before the trailer brake wiring and controller is installed, or can the brake controller and wiring be done at the same time?

For the wiring your 2019 Kia Sorento 3.3 L V6 FWD I always recommend doing it all at the same time. The Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat # C56256 plugs into your taillights but will require a constant power source be ran to the battery. It makes the most sense to run with all the wiring for the 7-way and brake controller so you have everything in the same place.

The Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV # ETBC7 will give you the other wiring required for the 7-way. The 4-way will plug into the kit taking care of the taillight circuits. Also included is wire loom to protect all the wiring running to the front of the Sorento also giving you a clean finished look.

I recommend Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 as it is a proportional brake controller that will adjust for severe and light braking automatically. It also features a customizable LCD screen that tells you if there is a problem. The P3 is also easily removed from the mount and can be stored away when not in use.

@JimD For a novice/DIY installer I would plan on around 4 hours to complete the installation of the 7-way and trailer brake controller on your 2019 Kia Sorento. A shop will likely look to charge between 2-3 hours.

We have the same vehicle but it is Awd. So you are saying we need to buy all three of those products to be able to put something with brakes and have no prevouis wiring harness installed,# C56256,# ETBC7 and # 90195? The #ETBC7 says you need to have am existing 4-pole flat harness already installed to use the #ETBC7. Thanks

@TravisB Yes you would need all 3 of the parts you mentioned. The # C56256 will give you your 4-flat connection. Then you can upgrade that to a 7-way using the # ETBC7 kit. Then use the Tekonsha P3 # 90195 for your brake controller. That will be everything you need to wire your vehicle and operate trailer brakes.
