I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2016 Nissan Rogue and it does not list any kind of restrictions when it comes to installing a trailer hitch. In fact there is an entire section dedicated to trailer towing, in which it lists a 1,100 pound maximum trailer weight, so the manufacturer is clearly okay with towing as long as you stay within the vehicle's limits.
I am not sure why your local Nissan dealer would tell you a hitch couldn't be added. It's also important to keep in mind that the consumer is protected by aftermarket additions such as a hitch by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. This act states, in part, that the vehicle's warranty cannot be voided by the simple act of installing the part.
For your Nissan Rogue I recommend the etrailer.com Class III # e98846 that features a hidden-crosstube design that maintains a factory appearance (with only the 2 inch receiver visible behind the vehicle - see attached image), a unique matte-black finish that gives off a rugged look and is resistant to scratching, and is made right here in the USA. It's towing and tongue weight capacities are 3,500 pounds and 525 pounds respectively, but you will still be limited by the lower capacities of your vehicle.
I have attached an installation video and the written instructions that you can look through as well.
To tow a trailer you will also need a wiring harness and a ball mount/hitch ball combo. For the harness I highly recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118480. This custom harness will plug right into factory ports behind the trim panels on the driver and passenger side. Then after running the hot lead up to the vehicle's battery you will have a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights.
I have again attached an install video that you can use for reference.
I have included a really great article below that details the process of picking out an appropriate ball mount for your particular setup, along with a link that will take you to our complete selection. A couple of general towing articles have also been attached that you might find helpful.
