Question:
What would cause an overload and make it go from green bars to flashing red

I checked with Curt and you are correct, the flashing red light indicates a brake circuit overload. Since the light is flashing that most likely means you have a short somewhere on the brake output circuit drawing too much power.
To correct this issue, we will need to test the brake controller # C74VV. Sever the brake output wire near the brake controller leaving enough room to reconnect it and then apply the manual slide. Using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993, you should get output to the controller side of the wire you severed.
If these connections check out and the brake controller is properly grounded then its not an issue with the brake controller. If it tests fine then the issue is either a short somewhere that is drawing too much power, or your trailer is actually overloading the controller. More than likely it's a short in the wiring somewhere or the connectors. To find the short, check the connectors, both the vehicle and trailer and inspect the wiring for any damage.
