Installation Direction of Leaf Springs Does the Band around the Spring Pack Go Forward
Updated 05/18/2010 | Published 05/15/2010 >
Question:
I am installing new leaf springs on a boat trailer. I bought double-eyed multileafed springs. Does the clamp around the bands leaves go toward the front of the trailer or the back, or does it matter?

Excellent question. I had to think about this one for a bit and consult another person familiar with trailer assembly. Normally the band is placed forward of the axle on the trailer but it really does not matter which way the band is oriented.
Measure the distance from the center of the spring eye on one end of the spring to the center of the spring and then to the center of the back spring eye. The on center distance should be equal. If one side is longer than the other then the shorter side should be positioned forward.
We have a video outlining spring replacement on a double eye suspension for you to review. In this video you will see that the band you mentioned is in the forward position.
