Does Going to Trailer Leaf Spring with More Leaves Increase or Decrease Height of Trailer

Updated 04/09/2025 | Published 04/08/2025

Question:

I currently have the DX75CR 7,000 lb 6 leaf on my trailer. Would switching to the DX74XR 8,000 lb 7 leaf increase or decrease my trailer height?

Hey Henry, that's a great question but the answer is that it depends...it depends on if your axle is above the leaf spring or below it.

If your axle is above the leaf spring it wouldn't affect the trailer height. If below it would raise it. Since each leaf is about 1/2 inch thick the height difference would be right around 1/2 inch if you went with the # DX74XR since it's a 7 leaf spring vs. a 6.

My leaf spring is under the axle. So then it would increase the height? Also, is there a difference in curvature between the 2 models that could affect the height??

@Henry Yes it would slightly increase the height. The curve or bend in the spring is going to be about the same. The heavier rated spring might flex a little less but nothing crazy.

@JamesonC sorry for needing extra clarification. So adding the extra 1/2" leaf under the axle would raise the height but adding it over the axle wouldnt? I guess just seems like it would be the opposite in my head

@Henry Sorry! If the spring is below the axle it actually doesn't affect the height no matter how many leaves there are since the axle still rests on the top leaf which is where the bolts attach it to the trailer frame. The only way it affects trailer height is if the the axle is below the spring.
