Re-Wiring a 7-Way Trailer Connector Onto a 1972 Shasta Trailer
Products Featured in This Question
Question:
I just got a 1972 Shasta trailer and I am trying to get my brake controller to work on it. I have a 2001 Chevy Suburban. I bought a prodigy brake controller for it and had it installed. The controller works great for my 7 pin wiring harness that I use for my big trailer. The Shasta has a 4 pin harness for the lights. The 2 brake wires were disconnected. If I put one of the wires on the ground and another on the green OR yellow wire I get full power to the brakes so I know they work OK and the brakes lock up. I have no eletric control coming from my prodigy. Can you help me with my wiring problem? I have an adapter that came with my car that I plug in that takes my 7 pin down to a 4 pin connector.

It sounds like you will need to wire the trailer with a 7-Way connector to match the one on your 2001 Chevy Suburban.
If you look at the Wiring FAQ article, linked below, about half way down the page you will see diagrams for connectors. You will need to re-wire the trailer wiring to match the one that says inside on the 7 Way Trailer Connector section. The colors on your trailer might not match up. But if you are looking at the back of a 7-Way connector, top left is tail and running lights, top right is 12 volt power, right center is right turn and stop, bottom right is electric brakes, bottom left is ground, and left center is left turn and stop. The center pin is for reverse lights.
For a connector, you will need the Pollak Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End, # PK12706.
