Converting a Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck for a 2027 Ford F-350 With Factory Prep

Updated 10/28/2026 | Published 10/27/2026

Question:

I have a 2027 Ford F-350 with the 8-foot bed and factory fifth wheel/gooseneck prep package. Our fifth wheel has a Lippert 1621 pin box and a 15,000 lb GVWR. I'd like to switch to a gooseneck connection so I don't have to keep taking a heavy fifth wheel hitch in and out of the bed. What would I need to make the conversion?

Hey Tyler, congratulations on the new truck! I recommend the Gen-Y Gooseneck Pin Box # GY38FR to replace your Lippert 1621. This eliminates the need for a traditional fifth wheel hitch in your truck bed and uses a built-in torsion system to help absorb road shock and reduce chucking when towing.

To complete the setup on your 2027 F-350 with the prep package you'll need the following:

-Gen-Y Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Pin Box # GY38FR

-B&W Ball and Safety Chain Kit # BWGNXA2061

-Gen-Y Safety Chains # GY49GR

The pin box has a 4.5k TW which is the correct rating based on your GVWR. The B&W kit installs directly into your factory gooseneck mounting points, and the safety chains complete the connection. This is a nice way to free up your truck bed without giving up the shock absorption you'd want when towing a larger fifth wheel.

What kind of fifth wheel do you have, and where are you headed once you upgrade the pin box?

Thanks Robin! We have a 2023 Grand Design Solitude 280RK. Will the GEN-Y use the existing mounting holes, or will I need to drill new ones to install it?

@Tyler the GEN-Y # GY38FR uses the existing mounting holes for your Lippert 1621 pin box, so you won't need to drill new holes. If you need new hardware, or just want to swap it out while you're at it, you can use the Bolt Kit # GY86FR. This includes the Grade 8 bolts, locknuts, and washers needed to install the new pin box.
