What Can I Use to Mount a Spare Tire Horizontally?

Updated 09/26/2026 | Published 09/22/2026

Question:

Can this spare tire mount Part Number: TD86FR be mounted so a 15-inch tire is supported horizontally on a 5-inch alumium I-beam used by Venture Trailers?

Hi JP,

The Tie Down Spare Tire Mount part # TD86FR cannot be mounted horizontally. Because of how the brackets and bolts are designed to work together to secure to the frame, mounting it horizontally would misalign the bolts resulting in the brackets not being fully secured to the frame.

Instead, I suggest using the Flint Hill Goods Spare Tire Mount part # FHG57ZR, it fits trailer frames up to 3" wide x 5" tall and works with 4 or 5 lug wheels. It's not compatible on 5 on 4 3/4" or 5 on 5 bolt patterns, those patterns are rare but wanted to mention it just in case. We have reviews from people installing the FHG57ZR horizontally on their trailers without any modifications needed, so I'm confident it'll work for you as long as your trailer frame isn't larger than 3" wide x 5" tall. I've included a photo that shows the wheel mounted horizontally as well so you can see what it'll look like.

What size is the spare tire you're wanting to use?

@RonP Glad to hear it! Do you have the spare tire mounted vertically or horizontally?
