How Do Hardwire A Brake Controller In A 2026 Toyota 4Runner Hybrid

Updated 09/22/2026 | Published 09/19/2026

Question:

I have a 2026 Toyota 4 Runner I Force Max Hybrid. It does not have Accessory Pre -wired option. It does have 4 and 7 pin wiring with Class 2 hitch and Tow/Haul Mode. Would a Redrac Trailer brake controller still be workable? Thanks, David

Hey David! It sure can.

If your 2026 4 Runner does NOT have the tow package, then you'd want to go with the hardwired, universal option: Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller # RED44FR.

I do recommend double checking first to see if you have a little square plug taped up out of the way behind the kick panel under your dash (driver side). Sometimes they are hidden and hard to find. If you do find it, you'll just need the custom-fit plug and play option: # RED56CR.

If you don't find it, you'll need to hardwire the # RED44FR as I mentioned. The wiring installs as follows:
White: Ground of vehicle (bare metal surface)
Black: 12v power (battery positive terminal)
Red: Brake signal switch (at brake pedal)
Blue: Run to back of vehicle and tie into the electric brake wiring for the 7 way harness (normally also blue wire)

If you need more help, just let me know and I'm here to assist!
What kind of trailer do you plan to tow? You'll like the reliability and simplicity of the Redarc.
