Can Safety Chain Retainer Be Mounted On Side Of Trailer Tongue

Question:

Should or could this safety chain bracket 3375471001 be mounted to the side of the tongue of a 7000 lb travel trailer? One commenter wrote that it would prevent the chain from being ground off should the trailer to the pavement.

Hey Dennis! The Buyers Products Weld-On Safety Chain Retainer # 3375471001 can definitely be mounted on the side of your travel trailer tongue.

That particular review was referencing how they were on the bottom, and if the trailer detached it might grind off the retainer where it attached which would result in the chains detaching and failing. That wouldn't be a concern if they're mounted on the side.

What kind of travel trailer do you have?

Hello Dennis, I agree with Robin, though I would qualify it with the comment that it would likely take multiple uncouplings before these would grind through. Welded below far enough back and the coupler is going to take the hit. Another solution is to weld on a skid plate that will protect both. That being said, I personally weld to all tag-a-long trailers on the side and gooseneck/fifth wheel trailers underneath. I hope this is of help, Brett

@BrettC thanks for adding that! The skid plate is a good idea as well, especially if someone prefers to keep the retainers underneath.

This part is back far enough that if the trailer did hit the ground. This part is still clearing, not to impact the ground. Do have a skid plate just behind the hitch for that purpose.

@Stephen thanks for pointing that out! If it's mounted far enough back to stay clear of the pavement and you have a skid plate protecting the tongue, that definitely addresses the concern.
