Updated 11/13/2025 | Published 11/12/2025

Question:

Hi, I recently got a gooseneck plate for my truck but there isnt any place to hook safety chains too, what is the standard chain hook size on a gooseneck? Im planning on just welding some D rings onto the plate but I dont wanna get too big or too small of a d ring.

Hello Nick, thanks for reaching out. The most common chain hook size for most gooseneck trailers is 3/8". If the trailer is very large and heavy, like over 20,000 lbs, a 1/2" chain hook would be the standard.

I see you were looking at the Buyers Products 3/8" x 35" Class 4 Trailer Safety Chain w/ Clevis Hook # 337B03835SC. A couple of these will work great provided the trailer stays under 20K.

What kind of trailer are these for?

What would be a good d ring to pair with these? My gooseneck plate is only rated for 18k so these would work perfectly for me

@Nick Yes something like the Buyers Products 3/4" Forged D-Ring With Weld-On Mounting Bracket # 337B46 would work great for welding to your hitch plate. Each one is rated for up to 9,120 lbs.
