Can The Curt Class 5 Universal Weld-on Hitch Be Bolted On?

Updated 07/24/2026 | Published 07/20/2026

Question:

I have a 2inch bolt on notice on my 2015 fleetwood excusion and need to change to a 2 1/2. Can the brackets be drilled and turned 90 degrees on the tube to make it a bolt-on hitch?

Hey Tony, thanks for reaching out. The Curt Class 5 Universal Hitch # C37CR can definitely be used on your 2015 Fleetwood Excursion, but I can't recommend rotating the side brackets 90 degrees or drilling new mounting holes. The hitch was designed, tested, and rated with the brackets in their original orientation, and changing that could affect both its strength and how the load is carried.

If your coach has a bolt-on hitch from the factory, I'd have a qualified fabrication shop build mounting brackets that adapt the # C37CR to your existing frame rather than modifying the hitch itself. That way you keep the hitch in its intended configuration while ending up with a strong, properly supported 2-1/2" receiver. That's the approach I'd take if it were my coach.

What will you be using the hitch for?
