Can The etrailer e38FV Anti-Rattle Collar Be Used With A Weight Distribution Hitch?

Updated 06/30/2026 | Published 06/27/2026

Question:

Good morning- I have a 2026 Toyota Sequoia with a 2inch receiver. I have a question about your e38FV anti-rattle attachment. I use this vehicle/receiver for two purposes - one with a bike rack, and 2, with a WD hitch to pull a 6000 lb trailer. My primary concern is eliminating rattle with the bile rack - it looks like the e38FV will work well for this purpose? Regarding the WD hitch, it looks like the e38FV may not be compatible with this application? If it is not, can I leave the e38FV on the receiver and just not tighten down the wing nut when using the WD hitch? Thanks as always for your great support!

Hey Dave, welcome back! Yes, the etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar # e38FV is a great choice for your bike rack. It works with virtually any standard ball mount or hitch-mounted accessory and does an excellent job of taking the rattle and chucking out of the receiver, so it's a great fit for that part of your setup.

Where it changes is with your weight distribution hitch. The # e38FV is not designed for use with a WD hitch because of the additional forces those systems put on the receiver. I'd recommend removing the collar entirely whenever you're towing with the weight distribution hitch installed. I also would not leave it on the receiver with the wing nut backed off, since it isn't intended to be used that way and could end up moving around or getting damaged. It only takes a minute to remove, and that's the safest approach when switching between your bike rack and your trailer.

What bikes and trailer do you haul?

Thanks Jesse - I appreciate your detailed response, and confirming that the anti-rattle hitch collar will work with the bike rack, but not the WD hitch/trailer. Haul a couple of Trek ebikes, and a 23 ft Airstream trailer. Have a great day! Dave

@DaveS Nice! Glad to help! Usually, a WD hitch puts enough tension on the hitch to where an anti-rattle device isn't needed, but if you want to add one, the etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Stabilizer for 2" Hitches # e99007 can be used with a WD hitch. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help!

Hay Dave, This is Jim from Wisconsin. I bought the Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar for our tow mountain bikes. We went from Northern Wisconsin out to Bullhead City, Arizona. It was a 2100 trip. I thought the collar worked great. At gas stops, I made sure the collar was tight and I really think it helped with the bikes. The return trip was great too. Jim

I leave mine on and do not tighten the device. My primary towing is with weight distribution but I do not use the device while towing that camper. I have a smaller trailer and a tow behind log splitter and it works just fine when I tighten it down. I do not remove the unit from the hitch at all I just don’t tighten it when I don’t use it.

Dave, I bought this anti rattle collar and am tickled pink with it. It works great! No more rattles either towing a car trailer or the hitch mounted motorcycle rack. I'm waiting for the 2-1/2 in version to come out so I can add that to my bigger receiver. I'm sure you will be happy with it. Wally

I bought the anti-rattle device for my thule bike rack ( 2 bike with extension for 4 bikes ). Works great, it gives me piece of mind that there is one more item holding the bar in place and most importantly keeping movement down on the bar in any case. It nice to ensure no extra movement takes place and thus no disconcerting noises from the back. I also use it for a hitch mount cargo rack ( 50 x 29 in. 500 lb Aluminum Hitch-Mount Cargo Carrier ) that just attaches to my 2inch hitch. That also is very helpful to help stability and sturdiness. The supplied lock for the cargo rack is short so its a bit tight as the sides of the hitch collar stick out a bit, but it fits.

@AlexR Thanks for the review, Alex. Glad to hear it's been working well with both your bike rack and cargo carrier. Cutting down on the movement and rattling really makes a difference, and I appreciate you pointing out the fitment with the hitch lock for others considering the same setup.
