Can The Patriot Hitches Adjustable Drop Hitch Be Used With The Top Piece Flipped Backwards?

Updated 06/19/2026 | Published 06/17/2026

Question:

Is it possible to turn the top piece backwards to flat tow? With the rise it ribs the bumper of our RV. I’ve ordered a receiver extender but just thought I would ask. The lip around the outside would be facing backwards. Not sure how this would effect he strength.

Hey Dwayne, thanks for reaching out. No, I wouldn't recommend flipping the receiver around. The Patriot Hitches 2" Adjustable Drop Hitch Adapter # PH98PR is designed and rated to be used in the orientation shown, and reversing the receiver would change how the loads are carried through the assembly. Even if it physically bolts together, it hasn't been tested or rated for use that way, so I wouldn't trust it for a flat-towing setup.

The other issue is that the anti-rattle screw and receiver design are intended to work in a specific orientation. Flipping the receiver could prevent the anti-rattle system from functioning correctly and may introduce additional movement into the setup. I think you're on the right track with the receiver extender, since that will give you the extra bumper clearance you're after without changing the way the adapter was designed to be used.

What vehicle are you flat towing?
