What Replacement Bearings Do I Need for a 4,400 lbs Dexter 248744 Axle?

Updated 06/22/2026 | Published 06/12/2026

Question:

I have 2 Dexter 248744 4,400 lb axles on a 2017 Keystone Cougar X-lite. I am purchasing new auto adjusting brakes. I found the Dexter brakes no problem, but I want to replace the bearings while I am doing the job. My style do not have the cotter pin, it has the brass colored snap ring. Can you help me make the right choice for replacement bearings and seals. I tried to remove one of the rear seals without much luck. Advice on that would be great as well.

Hi Bill!

The snap ring style bearing setups have been phased out, so there is not a kit with that replacement included, but we do have Replacement Outer Snap Ring for 35mm, 42mm, and 50mm Dexter Nev-R-Lube Bearings # 69-96 which is confirmed for axles between 3,500 lbs, to 8,000 lbs, which makes your 4,400 lbs. #248744 axle a perfect fit.

Your Dexter 4,400lb axles under your 2017 Keystone Cougar X-Lite trailer will use the following parts, which are all a perfect fit to work with your snap ring as well.

Inner Race # L68111
Inner Bearing # L68149
Outer Race # LM67010
Outer Bearing # LM67048
Grease Seal # 58846

To make removing your seal easier, I recommend a seal puller like Seal Puller # PTW1219. This seal puller will make light work of removing your seal so that you won't have to put too much effort into the removal. To remove, all you need to do is apply pressure downward on the handle and the tool will do the rest of the work.

Besides the seal, is anything else giving you trouble with the brake replacement?

I have a 23 keystone cougar half ton, 4,400 axles, mine has the same inner and outer bearings and races. I bought the kits before I tore mine apart and needless to say wrong kit. Matter of fact I called Dexter in Springfield and there is no kit. Just individually sold parts. If you got time tear down one to confirm which bearings and races. As far as the seal removal, water pump pliers work pretty good but you need new seals no matter what. A medium size pliers and a hammer will pop them right out. Good luck. Ps call Dexter in Springfield and they will tell you exactly what your axle needs.

@Cf You're correct, there's no kit at the moment since that axle has been discontinued. These parts are correct, but it never hurts to confirm with the manufacturer of the axle to confirm. What trips having you been taking with your Keystone Cougar?

@BillC Totally get it, time's moving quickly. Where are you going for the holiday? Are you just camping, or will you be doing any other fun activities?
