What to Do About Corroded EZ Connector 7-Way
Updated 05/28/2026 | Published 05/25/2026 >
Question:
I havent used my trailer in a year, but I started getting it ready for a trip IN TWO DAYS, and found the male trailer end of the ez connector 7-way has corroded and I am going to have to cut it off and install a traditional 7 pin connector. Not trying another one of these as the waterproof connection leaks like crazy anyway. My trailer was in a garage the whole time just so you know.

Hey Timothy, that's really a bummer that your EZ Connector 7-way corroded so badly. They aren't known to do this so it is a bit of a surprise. If you are running short on time you might just led the connector soak in Coca Cola as that will eat away all of the corrosion (makes you wonder what it does to your stomach...) but either way do you have a standard 7-way picked out already and you were wanting to just share what your EZ Connector looks like or were you wanting a recommendation for a new 7-way as well.

I bought a Bluetooth braking system: https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Brake-Controller/CURT/C51180.html but it doesn't fit my magnetic connector: https://www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-Vehicle-Wiring/EZ-Connector/319-R7-52.html and I'm stuck with a kit I can't install on my pickup truck, and it's frustrating to waste money. I contacted the manufacturer to explain the situation, and also some of your colleagues, but I never get back to them with a solution. This isn't great for promoting this type of kit, which seems fantastic but still needs improvement compared to other well-known and best-selling accessories on the market! ??

You know, I thought this was gonna be a good idea too! The waterproof seals are not, the pins corrode all the time, and I have to keep an engraving pen on hand to keep them clean. On top of that, the little tang that indexes the male to the female broke off within the first week of it being used. Again, it seemed like a good idea. When this one is done, I’m gonna replace it with a standard seven pin connector.

So the problem, except for the water getting in, was my fault. I either never realized or just forgot that power from the battery can feed back trough the trickle charge, 12 volt power line on the seven pin connector. This happens even when the battery disconnect is off (disconnected). Because of the water power was going to the magnet from that source. I don't know where it continued to ground. I should have made sure it was completely dry (it is stored in my garage) and disconnected the battery by removing the negative cable. If I had done that there never would have been a problem. Anyway, I did remove the corrosion and then hooked it to my tow vehicle. Lights, break lights, turn signals all worked correctly. So I am good for now. I put new O-rings in my cart but I haven't ordered them yet. Need to add more to get free shipping. I'm not going to change anything now. I'll let you know how it works on the trip we are about to take. Thanks Jameson. Have a good week. Tim Johnston
