Hey John, welcome back. The VueSMART RV and Trailer Backup Camera item # HM34FR is going to be operated by the Hopkins Towing Solutions mobile app through your phone's WiFi network. The camera creates its own local WiFi hotspot, which connects directly to your phone to stream video, meaning you do not need internet or cellular service for it to operate.
You're supposed to be able to use your phone while accessing the app but it's not reliable. We've had quite a few reviews from customer's saying the camera cuts out if you get a call. The reviews on the Hopkins Towing Solutions mobile app state the same thing.
As an alternative option, I recommend the Furrion Vision S+ Wireless RV Backup System w/ 1 Camera item # FR57AD. These system is extremely reliable and you won't have to worry about downloading apps or connecting to WiFi. Additionally, it has a built in microphone so if your phone doesn't have signal you can talk to your spotter through it.
What kind of trailer do you have?

I have a similar installation as the picture, installed by dealer. Download the app and connect your phone/tablet to the camera wifi, it will be dedicated to this. Works pretty well! I have a 22ft TT. It's offset 1 marker lamp from center. Pretty simple. There are others for more money, depends what you want. This let's you see backing up. I have a screen capture but can't upload it. Works for me.

The camera works great, but it does have great distance. I have a twenty-four-foot trailer and an extended cab Chevy Silverado. I only get reception to the end of the bed. I talked to VueSMART and they suggested that I add a copper wire extension. I haven't tried that yet
