Would upgrading the leaf springs on my camper increase the height of the camper?

Updated 05/12/2026 | Published 05/04/2026

Question:

Hi I was wondering if putting different leaf spring on my camper would make it sit up a little taller? My truck isn’t jacked up high just has a leveling kit but my camper sits lower. Once its hooked on the rear bumper is lower. Were wanting to pull a trailer with a SXS behind it and think it needs a little extra height.

You're not wrong Lane but I have 2 options that would work a bit better for what you're wanting to do.

When you swap leaf springs, you’re mostly just reducing sag under load. That can help a little, but it usually won’t give you the height gain you’re looking for.

Since your goal is to raise the camper, you’ll get much better results with a Correct Track kit or an over/under conversion.

Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit for Tandem Axle # RR23QX lets you raise your trailer or RV by 1-1/4" or 2-1/4".

Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kits will raise the trailer by moving the springs from below the axle to above it giving you about 3" to 5" of lift.

The # K71-384-00 is for 2-3/8-inch 3,500 lb axles, while the # K71-385-00 is for larger 3-inch axles typically found on heavier RVs and trailers. The correct one depends on your axle tube diameter, not just trailer weight.

What do you typically use your SxS for?

Yeah my axles have already been flipped will the correct track still work with the leaf springs on top?

@LaneB Yes, the Correct Track will still work even if your axles have already been flipped. Since the kit adds lift, make sure you still have adequate suspension travel and clearance afterward. You'll need at least 2-5/8" from the trailer frame to the spring mounting hole on the hanger. The 2-5/8" measurement is the minimum space needed at the spring hanger for the Correct Track brackets to fit and move properly without hitting the frame.

I bought the 6 leaf 4500 ib springs for my car trailer which originally had 6000 lbs springs. Installation was a breeze. Ride height didn't change but trailer ride was improved.

@GeraldT That’s a great example of how spring changes can affect ride quality more than ride height. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Old springs probably have about an inch of sag that will be eliminated. 6 leaf versus 4 leaf adds another 3/4” of lift. I have a stock 2025 GMC 2500HD and still had to add 1 1/2” blocks to level the 5er for double towing. New 6 leaf 4500# springs were also installed
