Do I Need Special Inverter For 5th Wheel RV That Is Wired For 50A? Want To Run Microwave On Battery

Published 04/21/2026

Question:

I’ve got a 50 amp fifth wheel and just want to run outlets and maybe a microwave off batteries. Do I need a big system like VN42VR or VN58ZR? not sure if I need full 50A hookup like my RV is wired for? I'm a little confused. thanks

Hey Melissa, great question - this is a really common point of confusion.

You don’t need to match your RV’s full 50 amp capacity when choosing an inverter. Even though your RV is wired for 50A, an inverter only supplies power based on its wattage, not the full shore power rating.

For typical off-grid use like outlets, TV, and a microwave, something like the 12V 2,400W inverter/charger # VN42VR or 24V version # VN58ZR is a great fit and gives you plenty of usable power.

Smaller units like the 12V 1,000W inverter # VN55ZR or 24V version # VN44RR work well for electronics and light loads, but they’ll struggle with higher-draw appliances like a microwave.

Most RV microwaves pull around 1,000–1,500 watts, so stepping up to a 2,400W unit gives you the headroom you need - plus the # VN42VR also includes a built-in charger and transfer switch, which simplifies your setup.

So it really comes down to what you want to run at the same time.

Are you mainly trying to power a microwave, or do you have other appliances in mind too?
