Availability of Trailer Hitch for 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 DRW

Updated 04/04/2026 | Published 03/22/2026

Question:

I have a 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 DRW with the factory hitch. It’s a 2 in hitch and I have never been able to get a answer on the hitch capacity and tongue weight rating so I would like to upgrade to either a 20k 2 1/2 in or minimum the 17k 2 in hitch. Do you have one that will fit my truck? Also does my existing hitch need to be cut off or does it bolt on. Thank you for the info. Brian

Hey Brian! Yes, we do have a hitch that will fit your truck. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C15809 bolts on and will sit underneath the existing factory hitch. You do not have to cut off the old hitch for installation. This is a Class V with a 2-1/2" receiver and a maximum GTW/TW of 20,000/2,700 lbs.

What do you tow most with your Ram 3500?

I have the above mentioned hitch that I purchased from e-trailer. It is a perfect fit and no need to remove the factory hitch.

I bought this to swap out the home fabricated one with 2” square because the way the p o fabricated it the spare tire wouldn’t fit. I installed this 2 1/2” and the tire fits and I have the added capacity to pull my equipment trailer. Took me longer to get the old one off (welded to stock hitch) than to install new one (about 30-40 min).

I have this hitch on my 2005 ram 3500 and it works great with the factory hitch in place. I haul a 34 foot box trailer from the bumper (I know it's ridiculous) that weighs about 12K loaded without any issue. No modifications to your existing pickup are needed. This kit bolts directly to the frame rails and as said, it hangs nicely below the factory hitch giving you both options for hitches.

I pull different trailers. I have a toy hauler that has a young weight of 1100 lbs and a 26 ft enclosed trailer that weighs 12 k lbs when loaded with a pin weight of 1400 lbs

@BrianH with tongue weights in that 1,100–1,400 lb range, the Curt # C15809 will handle both trailers comfortably and give you a nice safety margin. That upgrade will be a big improvement over the factory hitch, especially with that enclosed trailer loaded up. If you need anything else don't hesitate to reach out!
