Question:

I have a 2014 Ram 250 with a Mopar M20 5th wheel receiver. The M20 is a rebranded Curt Q20 receiver which has since been superseded as a A20. Not sure if there was any physical product changes or just a part number change. My Ram has a 6.4 bed with a Rambox. I purchased a 2023 Keystone Cougar 1/2 6th wheel that uses a Road Armor Lippert TrailAir pinbox. 7996261 I wish to swap the pinbox for Reese Sidewinfmder Pinbox 69220 Will this work with the M20 receiver I have? And what wedge lock is required for the M20 receiver? Thanks much! Jim

Hey James, thanks for the pictures! You are correct the Mopar M20 is made by Curt and it's the old A20 5th wheel hitch head. It is going to be compatible with the Reese Sidewinder Pin box 69220.

The correct wedge for a Mopar M20 is the Sidewinder Wedge for Curt A Series 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches item # C16992. It'll lock the kingpin in place in the head of your 5th wheel hitch so the rotating feature of the pin box is the only thing that moves. The wedge will bolt to the Sidewinder pin box with included hardware like the picture below shows.

Additionally, your Road Armor Lippert TrailAir pinbox pn 7996261 fits a 1621 pin box bolt pattern. The Reese Sidewinder 69220 is exactly what you'll need to replace it.

Do you have your first trip planned yet with the new 5th wheel trailer?

Thank you EVER so much. There was a lot of confusion and contradictions from various sources over mating a M20 to the Reese Sidewinder. Including an article in the instructions on the sidewinder about them not being comparable. But it’s rediculious to assume Sidwinder would exclude the M20 (Curt Q20) being as it made adapters for many other major brands. It doesn’t help that I have tried for two weeks to reach Reese Customer service or sales unsuccessfully. And the head of the service department at my Local RV store was also non responsive. After finding nothing positive or supportive other than finding you and Curt I left the same message. Only you have responded and answered my question directly. Prior to your message, I was thinking I had to buy a whole new hitch and replace my Mopar/Curt one. Originally I was looking a matingbReese hitch, and receintly a BW hitch and adapter. Which would be an addition cost between $1,600-2,000. After a few more requests from other RV services I got no defense answers. They will check and get back to.. maybe Monday after calling Reese. But here’s the bottom line that I found out. My RV service tech told me they were incomparable but but wasn’t able to verify that with Reese. Reese isn’t answering because the company is in turmoil because someone in upper management or ownership embezzled $1.6 billion and has disappeared. The company is currently looking at bankruptcy. Lippert wants to buy out Reese but until all the legal issues are resolved it will not happen. This also means until this resolved sales directly from Reese for multiple suppliers will be impacted and warrity will be an issue. But you have solved my problem and saved me considerable cost. I’m buying the recommended wedge and will fit it to my hitch and I’m good to go! Thank you again, for your awesome support and quick response! Best regards! Jim

@JamesM You're extremely welcome! Happy I was able to sort that out for you. Yeah, Draw-Tite, Reese, and Tekonsha are all a ginormous mess right now with their parent company under a massive fraud investigation while going through bankruptcy. I can definitely see a Sears type sell off in the future but like you said Lippert's going to have some litigation issues seeing as how they own almost everything already. You bring up a really good point with warranty issues. It's been mentioned but no one actually knows how that's going to be resolved yet. If you need anything else down the road do not hesitate to reach out! Goodluck with your new 5th wheel trailer! I hope you get lots of enjoyment out it.

@JamesM Not to contradict Jerred but with all the research I did when I got a sidewinder hitch the Q20 is not compatible. The wedge will fit and lock in place but the way the Q20 was designed does not accommodate the "twisting" motion that the head will see with the wedge installed. I opted to get the A20 as it does allow for this motion. I hope this helps and safe travels.

@Jeremiah What’s the difference between M20(Mopar)/Q20(Curt) versus the A20 Curt? Was there physical changes to the head or was it just supersede number from Q20 to A20? Thanks

The sidewinder will work with any hitch as long as you have the right wedge for it. I've use different hitches and kept the sidewinder. The most important is to get the right sidewinder for your trailer.
