Disc Brakes for Boat Trailer With 5-Bolt Brake Flange and 6 on 5-1/2 Bolt Pattern

Updated 03/20/2026 | Published 03/19/2026

Question:

Trying to make sure that these are the correct breaks I’m looking at. The current set up is 6 lug wheel and drum brakes. Looking to convert. Besides this break kit do I need anything else. Based on the bolt pattern on the back it looks like a 5200-6000 lbs axel and not a 3500. This is a single axle trailer. Please help if you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Hey Ivan! That does look like a standard 5-bolt brake flange. You can compare what you have to the measurements in the picture below just to be sure. If your axle tag is still on there somewhere it would be easier to identify the capacity. The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R526DKG fits a 5-bolt brake flange and 6 on 5-1/2 hubs, but it is designed to fit an idler hub like the # 8-213-51UC1-EZ.

Unless you prefer slip-on rotors I think you're better off using the DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit # DE28YR. This setup comes with the hubs and rotors which will save you some money. If you need replacement brake lines to go with the brakes you can use # 18SI-BLKIT. If you have electric brakes right now let me know and I can help you find an actuator as well.

The idler hub listed above and the DeeMaxx are both designed to fit #42 spindles with # 25580 inner and # 15123 outer bearings. The Dexter idler hub has a 2.25" inner diameter (ID) grease seal and the DeeMaxx has a 2.125" ID grease seal. These are interchangeable since the outer diameter is the same for both, so if that doesn't match your setup the seals can be swapped out for the right size.

Any big plans with your boat once you upgrade your brakes?
