Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged, and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This disc brake assembly resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat trailer. All KodaGuard calipers undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 600 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 600-hour salt spray rating indicates that this product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

In addition, the rotors and caliper mounting brackets have a Dacromet plating, which offers a 300- to 400-hour salt spray rating. The pistons, the brake pad backings, and the caliper mounting bolts are stainless steel. These corrosion-resistant components make this Kodiak assembly a natural choice when installing disc brakes on your boat trailer.

Over-the-Hub Rotors for Easy Replacement

Kodiak's slip-on, cast iron rotor makes it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub. It is most often wheel bolt piloted for a loose fit and then held in place by the wheel itself. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

The rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage.

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 5-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

So on the last trailer I converted to hydraulic disc, I used the Titan kit with actuator. This trailer is a cargo trailer for work 14'X8' and not that heavy. I went with Kodiak discs and the Hydrastar actuator. I mounted it inside the trailer to protect it and keep it out of sight. It's so quiet but works flawlessly! Even with the door open, it's tough to hear, so for bleeding, I set up a remote switch to activate the system. It doesn't leak, has plenty of power, and is very smooth coupled with my factory Ford brake controller.. It's been a year, so long time reliability is a wait and see, but so far, I'm very happy.

Great! Disc brakes are far more reliable and strong than electric drums.

Very pleased with my order of the Kodiak brake kit. I called etrailer in a frenzy due to a bad time crunch and lack of parts accessibility on my remote island in Alaska I live on. William B was amazingly helpful and knowledgeable and was able to find my parts needed and get them to me very fast so I could get my time crunch repair done in time! Parts quality is excellent! Everything fit perfect on this double axle boat trailer by Nextrail. A guaranteed repeat customer! Thank you etrailer and especially William B.

Ordering, processing, and delivery was seemless. The parts were very well packaged. The price was right and free shipping made this purchase a no-brainer. Thanks e-trailer

Everything fit perfectly!

  • Slip On Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for a 5,200 lb Axle with 6 on 5-1/2 inch Bolt Pattern
We have a slip-on disc brake kit that would work well on your hubs that have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. However, since your back axle uses hub-centric wheels I cannot recommend a slip-on kit like part # K2R526DKG although this kit matches your axle capacity and bolt pattern. Since your back axles uses wheel bolts instead of lug nuts this means the wheel centers on the hub. Since a slip-on kit like this will add space between the wheel and the hub your wheel may not perfectly center on...

  • Will Kodiak Disc Brake Kit Fit 2000 Four Winns Horizon 180 Boat Trailer
From what I was able to find, the typical axle used on the boat trailer for your 2000 Four Winns Horizon 180 uses a 5,200 lb axle. I recommend verifying this information by looking at the axle tag on your trailer axle. Based on this and the bolt pattern you have, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12" Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Dacromet and KodaGuard - 5,200 to 6,000 lbs # K2R526DKG is the correct kit for your trailer.

  • Does Kodiak Disc Brake Kit K2R526DKG Come With Bolts to Secure Bracket to Brake Flange
The hardware that secures the caliper mounting bracket to the brake flange is not included with the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12" Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Dacromet and KodaGuard - 5,200 to 6,000 lbs # K2R526DKG. You can, however, add this with the Mounting Bolts and Hardware for 12" Brake Assemblies # BRKH12. I did want to mention that the # K2R526DKG does come with the four bolts needed to mount the calipers to their mounting bracket.

  • Recommended 12 Inch Rotor for Idler Hubs with 6 Lugs
I have a couple rotor kit options for you. We have the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12" Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Dacromet and Stainless Steel - 6,000 lbs # K2R526DS or the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12" Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Dacromet and KodaGuard - 5,200 to 6,000 lbs # K2R526DKG. If you just want the rotor, I recommend the Kodiak 12" Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Dacromet - 5,200 lbs to 6,000 lbs # KR12D. This rotor has bolt holes for 1/2 inch studs.

  • Upgrading to Disc Brakes on a 7K Boat Trailer
If you have a twin axle 7K trailer, you likely have 3.5K axles. Of course, you will want to verify this since this is important when considering the brakes. That having been said, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12" Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Dacromet and KodaGuard - 5,200 to 6,000 lbs, part # K2R526DKG, is still a decent fit for your axles despite being rated for higher capacity ones. The reason is that these use the same psi (1500 or more) as smaller ones. Some other things to consider when looking...

  • Hubs to Use With Kodiak Disc Brake Kit K2R526DKG
Since the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit part # K2R526DKG is a slip on disc brake kit you would need an idler hub like the part # AKIHUB-655-6-EZ-K which is a 6k hub and has the correct 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. We don't have a Dexter hub in this configuration but the etrailer hub I mentioned would work really well and is also pre-greased with LMX red grease too for an easier and cleaner install.

I would be happy to make a recommendation for upgraded axles and suspension components for your 2018 Grand Design Imagine 2670MK, but first I will need a few measurements from your current components.
