How to Fix Sway on Highway in 2020 Delano with Mercedes 3500 Chassis

Updated 03/25/2026 | Published 03/17/2026

Question:

I have a tiburon Delano 2020 chassis Mercedes 3500 chassis I noticed traveling around 65 on the highway and especially when passed by trucks it’s seems to float definitely needing 2 hands to constantly have to recorrect. I’m looking at your products the sumo front and rear bushings as well as the rear sway bar. Am I looking at the right products or do you Suggest anything else or added.

Hi Todd, I know exactly the feeling you’re describing, and you’re definitely not alone. That floaty, pushy feeling at highway speeds, especially when trucks pass, is really common on the Sprinter 3500 chassis with a taller coach like your Tiburon, and it can make for a pretty tense drive.

You’re absolutely looking in the right direction with the upgrades you mentioned. The biggest improvement usually comes from adding a rear sway bar first, and for your setup I would start with the Hellwig rear sway bar part # HE77YR. That does the most to control that side to side movement and helps keep the coach planted when wind or passing trucks hit you. If you still want to tighten things up after that, adding SumoSprings front and rear is a great next step. The rear part number would be part # SSR-338-54 and the front would be part # SSF-106-47, and together they help reduce body roll and improve overall stability.

The sway bar handles the big side to side push, and the SumoSprings help support and control the suspension so you’re not constantly correcting. However, a lot of customers see great improvement with just a rear sway bar. That’s usually what takes it from a white knuckle drive to something much more relaxed and confident.

What’s your typical setup, are you towing a car or carrying bikes or gear, and are your drives more long highway runs or windy backroads?

Thank you, I ordered the sway bar and the sumo spring helper; however after talking with your representative today I went with the sad-106-40 front sumo instead of the 47 since that might have been overkill on weigh making it to tight.

@ToddG Hi Todd, I’m glad you followed up on this, and I completely understand why you were weighing the 500 lb versus 1,000 lb option. On your Sprinter 3500 chassis with the Tiburon, even though the coach is only around 24 feet, it still carries a fair amount of weight up front from the diesel engine and cab, so the front suspension is working pretty hard. The 500 lb SumoSprings you ordered will still help and you should notice some improvement, but in a lot of cases on this chassis, the 1,000 lb version ends up being the better match for controlling that float and reducing how much you’re correcting at highway speeds. That said, you’re not off base with the 500 lb choice. It will give you a bit more of a softer feel, and some people prefer that if they’re trying to avoid adding too much firmness to the ride. The tradeoff is it may not control that side to side movement quite as much as the higher capacity version but I think the 500 lb compared with the Hellwig will be more than enough to help with that floating feeling.

Heather, I think I like the idea of the heavier sumo model, what’s the procedure since I already ordered it! ? Order another one and send the other one back?

Todd. You are heading down the correct path. The Sumo Springs were my first simple upgrade to my 2018 Sprinter chassis. Big difference to ride and handling. I chose the heavier springs. Next is shocks and sway bar. Higher cost with additional benefit. Make sure you put on front and rear.

Todd... Bought this kit and had my local RV mechanic install it 2 years ago on my 2014 Winnebago View Profile. Was worth it ! Now.. incidentally... i just put $ 2,400.00 in to new shocks and struts and did sense one bit of improvement.

@Kortney That’s great to hear the sway bar made such a difference, that’s usually the upgrade that people feel the most right away. And yes, what you mentioned about the shocks and struts is something we hear pretty often. On these Sprinter-based coaches, they can help with ride quality a bit, but they don’t usually fix that side to side sway or the push from passing trucks, which is what most people are trying to solve. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, especially after doing both upgrades. That kind of feedback helps a lot of folks know where to start.

I put a set of the SumoSprings on the front and rear axle of my 2018 Mercedes 3500. I felt this helped with stability and driving ease!

@RonB Love to hear that Ron! People do like the SumoSprings. Did it help with sway on the highway at all?

Once I added the summo springs the sway and wind push was way less. Wish I would have installed them sooner. Much less stress when driving.

We bought a used 2021 Tiffin Wayfarer Mercedes 3500XD (I don't think XD makes a difference in parts). We had the same problem with our motorhome, especially when it was windy or going by tractor trailer. Had to have strong 2 hand grip on the wheel at all times. Rain as well. Plus pulling into driveways, potholes, etc LOTS of rocking & rolling. We watched the e-trailer videos for these very problems. We decided to have our mechanic install a rear Roadmaster sway bar & rear sumo springs. It made a big difference. Let me just add we put new Michelin steer tires & got an alignment as well after mechanic notice our tires wearing unevenly. Which I'm sure contributed to the problem because alignment was way off. We didn't do all that at once, only as we could afford. All those things made a HUGE difference! In fact it was such a big difference we decided this year to add a new Roadmaster sway bar to the front to make handling & swAy even better (apparently sumos were already on the front). I am not sure you're going to see such a huge difference with just the sumos. The video suggested 3 things to do for steering & sway. I think the biggest difference would be the rear sway bar if you only want to do one thing. The only thing we haven't done is the steer centering assist. Hopefully we won't need it now.

@Cchamp5471 I’ve heard a lot of similar stories from Tiffin owners with the OEM stock suspension at first, so many people end up doing upgrades for this exact reason. Tiffin should’ve named it the ‘Swayfarer’… just kidding, bad joke. But seriously, I really appreciate you sharing all that. It’s super helpful to hear how much of a difference the sway bar made, and the Roadmaster setups really do a great job dialing things in. Where are you planning to take the Tiffin next?
